Need translation help

Original: "... og nyborgenserne drog ud med bøsser for at give de stakkels dyr nådestødet."

My feeble attempt at translation into English with the help of Google Translate: "...and the Nyborgers went out with ???? to give the poor animals the coup de grace."

(Google translate says it means "gay men", but that makes no sense. The context is a field full of injured, dying horses that need to be put out of their misery using some kind of weapon or tool.)

Yes, it's genealogy related. It's from a book about an ancestor of mine.

The good citizens of Nyborg set out with guns in order to put the animals out of their misery.
"Bøsse" is just an old word for a gun, especially of the type used in hunting.
In modern language it is also slang for "gay man".
