Hello,

I'm hoping to find the parents of one Hans Henry Nelson who immigrated from Denmark to the United States. I have a lot of conflicting information, but I will post everything that I have. According to obituaries and family he was born on Oct 4 1883 in Aarhus, Denmark to Peter Nelsen and Karen Round and died July 19, 1956 in Evanston, Wyoming, USA. He immigrated in 1896 or 1898 to the United States. After a brief stay in Chicago he finished his life in Wyoming as a sheep herder. He married Emma Morton April 6, 1927 in Coalville, Utah, USA. They had two children together, one of which is still living.

Other family stories are: He had a big family(>10 siblings) and came to the US by himself when he was 16. They said he went back to Denmark once to visit and didn't keep in touch after he came back. They also believed he changed his last name from "Nelsen" to "Nelson".

I've found his WWI draft card which states his closest living relative as an N. Nelson in Silkeborg, Denmark. I have found him in the US 1910, 1930, and 1940 census records and his marriage record. Also on his Application for License to Marry, Hans Henry lists his parents as "Nels Nelsen" (with the "e") and "Mary Sorensen", both residents of Denmark. That might explain the "N Nelson" listed on his draft card, yet it brings into question the Peter Nelsen and Karen Round parentage. The census, draft, and marriage records all have different opinions on his birth year, varying from 1880 to 1885, however the date Oct 4 remains the same.

My husband and I think that Karen's last name of "Round" is wrong and may actually be where she is from. Sadly I don't know any more than this and the living son won't discuss his family history. Any help would be appreciated. I will gladly post the documents I have if needed. I know that this is a very common name and I don't have a lot to go on but thank you for your help.

This seems to be the same person searched for in https://www.slaegtogdata.dk/forum/index.php/topic,64587.0.html

In the search for him, it may help to know that Skanderborg amt and Aarhus amt (county) was one county called Aarhus amt from 1867 to 1942, meaning that Silkeborg parish in that period was in Aarhus amt. Please refer to page 6 in the document http://www.nordgen.com/sites/nordgen.com/files/Udvidet%20sogn-herred-amt%202011.pdf

This is a piece of info you don't get, when you search in the census database at http://ddd.dda.dk/ddd_en.htm and the church records and censuses at http://www.sa.dk/content/dk/ao-forside.

Thank you for the information! It seems like it is the same person that we are looking for. I'll watch the other posting to see what comes up.

I think you should research Henry Nielsen born 20.october 1882 in Silkeborg, his parents being Niels Christian Nielsen and Jacobine Christine Sørensen and his gparents Hans Christian Nielsen of Nørre Snede and Karen Pedersen of Alrø, Århus. October fits,Silkeborg fits, N.Nielsen fits and more if you think about it.If you search at:http://www.emiarch.dk/search.php3?l=da you find two entries with Henry Nielsen kontrakt nr. 194200 and date 7/2/1895, and kontrakt nr. 71900 and date 3/10/1908, both fit your familystory.
I have done research tracing my own ancestors back to Denmark and in that case using information about other persons related to find the right birthplace, such a detour was helpful. Did your Henry mention danish friends in the US? Newspapersearch is another source and I know the Wyoming Newspaperproject:http://wyonewspapers.org/ has been very useful to me as well as the Congress Library:http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/, local newspapers recorded even family events and such.
Familyrumours are not the truth, but somewhere the facts are hidden. You may wonder why Henry ends up in the middle of nowhere after living in Chicago, maybe something happened to him there.

I found this old thread from this Forum, can anyone confirm the findings of Homer Ficken?:

False alarm:  The Henry Nielsen born 20 October 1882 that I listed registered for the draft in Chicago 1918, and is there in the 1920 census, married.

Sorry for the bad lead, but only near match immigrant I can find.

I do not have access to the source Homer refers to, maybe someone will check.

Here's the whole thread https://www.slaegtogdata.dk/forum/index.php/topic,11989.0.html

Quote (Nicole Hardin):
"He was Hans Henry Nelson born Oct 4, 1883 in Aarhus Denmark the son of Peter and Karen Round (a kind genealogist told me that Round could have been misread; maybe it is Rasmusdatter commonly abbreviated Rasmd.) Nelson. Hans Henry died in Evanston Wyoming July 19, 1956. He came to the US in 1898 and worked in Chicago, moved to Evanston Wyoming in 1912 to work at Painter Sheep Company. He married Emma Morton (Sept 10, 1892-Dec 31, 1971) on April 6 1927 in Coalville Utah. He had two sons Wayne Nelson and Herbert Eugene Nelson (Nov 2 1930-Oct 1984; my grandfather)."
