Maribo and Sorø counties are located in the eastern part of Denmark east of the Great Belt.

The owners of estates were before 1851 the probate authority for the estate peasants.

Be aware that the probate authorities are listed under the county in which they are located. This also applies in cases where, among other birkefogeder and estates covered a larger area that included several districts or counties.

In the villages, the farms could be owned by several different estates. It may therefore be difficult to find the right probate authority.

On https://familysearch.org/search/search/library_catalog you can use search of Place-names (Denmark, <county>, <parish>) to find the different probate authorities in a specific parish.

Thank you!....I think.  I'm not sure if I'm ready for this.   ??? Are there any tips on how to start searching?  For example, I am looking for probate records for a Jens Hansen, born about 1756-58, of Torkilstrup/Lillebrænde.

Thank you Helmer!  What exactly am I looking for?  I think I found the burial record for Jens (23 January 1831), but I'm not sure.  AO:  1813-1839 Lillebrænde, Falster Nørre, Maribo ops 138 4th from bottom.  I think it might say his name is Jens Hansen Sørensen, so it may not be him, but the age could fit.  Census has him born in 1756 & 1758, death record is 1761.  I thought maybe if I found his death date, it might narrow down where I would be looking.

There is no Jens Hansen Sørensen in the Birkefoged, Maribo, Falster birk, Skifteprotokol, 1829-1831 on ArkivalierOnline. The ledger has a list of reported deaths near the end. January 1831 on Opslag 559 and 560.

If the house he lived in when he died, was owned by an estate, a probate may be sought under the relevant estate. In Lillebrænde parish therefore Skørringe estate.
Unfortunately, this estate's probate records are not found on ArkivalierOnline. But you can order the film to your local FamilySearch Center.
