Hello,

I am trying to find information about 2 great-great-grandparents, Rasmus Hansen and Marie Nilsdtr/Nelson. Very little family information exists and the names are very common :(

I am attaching an Ancestor Chart my mother filled out at some time--it is for her brother but relationships are all the same.

Rasmus Hansen--born Mar 18, 1847. Place Sane, Denmark. Died Aug 28, 1911 in Dodge or Olmsted County Minnesota.
Marie Nilsdtr/Nelson--born Jan 24, 1849. Place Sane, Denmark. Died July 22, 1931 in Dodge or Olmsted County MN
Marie's death certificate says her father's name was Nels Nelson. Her second child's birth record says her maiden name was Nils. Findagrave says her father's name was Thompson. Weird and wrong.

A family history begins: "Rasmus Hanson (1847-1911) m. Marie Hanson (1849-1931) in Denmark, just before emigrating to America. Rasmus name was Rasmus Rasmussen. The Danish spelling of the last name is Hanson, but living in a Norwegian community, they evidently adopted the "on" spelling." That's all. The Rasmus Rasmussen comment is confusing.

They likely emigrated in 1868, which is a specific question on the 1910 census. Rasmus purchased land in Olmsted County in 1869 (plat record). The 1900 census says 1878 but that is clearly wrong.

The 1870 census (dated June 3) lists Rasmus as 23 and Marie as 21, which is consistent with the birthdates above. The 1880 census (also June) lists Rasmus as 33 and Marie as 31. The 1910 census (April) lists Rasmus 63 and Marie 61. (A september birth would not fit these dates, although I know stuff was often wrong.)

The outlier is the 1900 census that specifies Rasmus's birth month as September and his age as 52; Marie's birth month is consistent as January and her age 51. This one also asks how long they have been married--29 years, which would put their marriage a year or two after first child Karen's birth in Sept 1869--so that is wrong.

Without a firm place of birth I have no idea where to start looking. Karsten on Ancestry's forum suggested "Sane" might be Sande in Schleswig---he couldn't find another "Sande" place in Denmark with a Rasmus who fit. He suggested this forum as people may have access to German archive data for that place.

I tried to attach other jpegs but it won't let me

any help is appreciated--this is kind of a needle in a haystack

My Ancestry friend Karsten solved who they were/are--not Schleswig but Funen! So I'll try to close this out.
