I am researching a Danish ancestor Hannah K. Jensen, born 15 June 1863. I know she emigrated from Denmark sometime in 1889--destination Rock Springs, Sweetwater, Wyoming USA. I have read that all emigration during this time was kept in the Police records. Is anyone on this board aware of an online resource of emigration information from these Police records?

Poul-Erik Langvad

Hi you can try this one:

http://www.emiarch.dk/search.php3?l=da

There is no one in 1889 which fit your informations.

Try: Jensen, Hann

one of them may be yours.

If you are just looking for her immigration, a Hanne Jensen 26 arrived Baltimore from Hamburg 29 August 1889 on the S. S. Gothia (attached)

Paul Londahl-Smidt

According to the 1900 census, Hannah was born in June 1863.  There is a Hanne Kathrine Jensen born in Køng, Hammer, Præsø on 8 Jun 1863 to the unmarried Maren Nielsen, the alleged father Hans Jensen, opslag 69 nr 18.

Sincerely,
Paul

Paul- thank you for the information you provided on Hanne Katherine Jensen. I am new to the forum and researching Danish parish records. After going to the opslag 69 nr.18  being unfamiliar with the Danish Language and the script I was not able to understand all the names and info. provided.

I would be very grateful for a transcription and Danish transcription and English translation of  nr. 18.

I also wonder what 1900 Census you were referring to American or Danish?

Melander

Homer- thank you for responding to my query and sending an attachment.

Are you aware of any particularly good sources for emigration from Denmark for 1889?

And do you know if emigration records include name of mother, father, and Amt, Herred, Sogn of birth?

Melander, I found the ship via my paid subscription to Ancestry.   If she had arrived at New York instead of Baltimore, it should also have been found on the free Castle Garden site:  http://www.castlegarden.org/
and New York arrivals 1892-1924 will be at the Ellis Island site:  http://www.ellisisland.org/search/search_new.asp?MID=06162779020059426400&

The police registers list emigrants who purchased a ticket at Copenhagen and that data for 1868-1908 may be searched here:   http://ddd.dda.dk/ddd_en.htm  as well as those Danish censuses that have been transcribed.

However, some  took the ferry to Hamburg and left from there as Hanne did.

The earlier passenger lists rarely listed any relatives or specific places of origin, but in early 1900s columns for birthplace and nearest relative in country of origin were added, as well as specific destination in USA and name and relation of contact there.

Some circumstantial evidence:

The 1900 census of Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, Wyoming (attached)  that I believe Paul cites shows Hannah married to an Andrew Peterson born August 1862 Denmark, year of immigration 1888, occupation Teamster.

The Copenhagen emigration register shows:

Name:  Petersen, Anders Occupation:  Kusk (Teamster)
Age:  25 Destination:  Green River, Wy.
Contract no.:  600 Registration date:  1/2/1888
Birth place:  ? Birth place:  ?
Last res. parish:  København Last res. county:  København
Last residence:  Kbhvn. Destination country:  USA
Destination city:  Green River Destination state:  Wyoming
Name of ship:  Hekla
IDcode:  D8789P0901

The Hekla arrived NY from Copenhagen 25 Jan 1888.

Lissa found a Hanne Catrine Jensen of appropriate age in Snesere, Præstø 1880:

An Anders Petersen was born in Snesere 10 August 1862.

But, Anders Petersen is a very common name combination, and above may just be coincidence.
