A gentleman from Wales e-mailed me and asked for help in locating his great, great grandfather.  This is what he knows   I am a complete novice and have got stuck with the Danish side of the family. To complicate matters the name we use is Daw but I have been told recently that the name was anglicised, it could have been Dauv but no one knows for sure. It would be great to find out more about the family in Denamrk, it has been impossible to find out anything further back.

The person I am trying to find is Henry or Heinrich Daw. We know he came from Copenhagen, was a seaman but then jumped ship and settled in Cardiff, Wales, where my great grandfather and grandfather lived. If I could find out his parents perhaps I could find more of the family room which would be wonderful.

1881 Wales, Glamorgan
Listed as fireman on the SS Galdames.

1911 Wales, Glamorgan, Cardiff
Henry Daw, Husband, 68, shopkeeper, md. 44yrs, 8 children born, 7 living, born Copenhagen
Ellen Daw, Wife, 67, born in Cork, Ireland.
Joseph Daw, Son, 27, born in Wales, Labourer - blacksmith

English and Wales Death Index 1916-2007
Daw Henry, Age 76 (born abt 1843 & d Jun 1919 in Cardiff, Glamorgan

Any help would be really appreciated.

The only one that came close was this from the 1845 census
All persons in the household
Sydslesvig, , Husum-Bredstedt, 6. Quartier, Fischerstrasse 60½, Arbeitshaus und Armencasse, 632.2, FT-1845, C3130

Heinrich Georg Dau    3    Unverheir.       ihr uneheliches Kind    Kiel

I am not comfortable with this since the Wales record says Copenhagen.  Can any of you give me your thoughts?

Med venlig hilsen
Paul

Hej Judith og Gitte,

Tusind tak for din hjælp.  I think the answer must be in the Welsh records.  Perhaps the marriage record?

Hej Eva,

Thanks for the information on the marriage.  Perhaps the record will give us a date of birth or a place of birth or if real lucky both.

Hej Eva,

I have no idea what Denmark BS stands for.  I think the solution to who he is is in the Welsh records.  We are just guessing who he was in Denmark and how he spelled his name.

Could it mean British subject? Then there must be an application for citizenship.
