1916 census for Søllerød

[Paul Londahl-Smidt]

My grandfather Karl Johan Smidt (and also my father Lauritz Bernhard Løndahl Smidt) were living in Søllerød, Sokkelund, København in 1916, opslag 278.  Would someone be kind enough to tell me the name of my grandfather's company and also was he wealthy or not.

I think the name of the company is "Smidts Centralbureau".

I found the name in the phone book for the year 1916:

Scroll down to "Navnebogen 1916" and click on "seem - ø". You will find the company on page 3 column 5 in the bottom. I guess that's your grandfathers company.

I don't know if he was wealthy or not, but if you compare him with the other in the census you can see that the postmaster has an income of 8075 kr. and the unskilled labourer 650 kr. So your grandfather had a larger income than most people.

He was listed as a merchant in Villa Stokkeberg, Malmmosevej. Phone Holte No. 29

In the census in 1916 appears his property title number, 1 ds, of the parceled Dronninggård. This property can be found on http://www.ois.dk. Current address Malmmosevej 2, 2840 Holte. The house was originally built in 1907.
Value of property was 1 October 2012 estimated to 5.9 million. Land value: 3,731,500
The most recent sale was in 1994, when the property was traded to 1,959,150.

I'm sure your grandfather owned the property. The deed must be located online somewhere in Copenhagen County Nordre Birks Deed and Mortgage Protocol. At the address http://www.denjyskekirkebog.dk/FT/RealBS.htm there are links to the deed and mortgage protocols on http://www.sa.dk. I have not been able to find any contents to the protocols online. So there are thousands of pages to flip through.

Tusind tak Helmer.  And I thought that my father came to the USA because his family was poor.  Now I think he came here to represent his father's business interest, the 1929 depression hit and then he met my mother.  How genealogy changes how we see our family.

I do not think you grandfather was poor - on the contrary.

He lived in 1908 with he wife and son in Henrik Rungsgade #25. I happen to know those appartments, since I used to live in #23. They are huge 4 rooms apartments - on the corner of Åboulevarden. Very god living conditions for those times.

Aktieselskabet Smidts Central Bureau har under 20. August 1915 foretaget ændring i sine Vedtægter, hvorefter Aktiekapitalen er forøget til 10,000 Kr., der er fuldt indbetalte.

I don't know how good your Danish is, but basicly he establised a company to deal with paper.
And he shortly after encreased the capital of the company to 10.000 kr. A fortune in those days...

Hej Ellen,

I think that he was a very successful business man.  About 1917 he even manufactured the Gorm automobile.  Only about 20 of them were made and I think this was one of his few failures.  He had several Danish patents and for the last 9 years of his life lived at Sortedam Dossering 59D, a rather nice looking apartment.

I have a book from the lokal-historiske forening, with postcards pictures from this area in 1900-1920. I tried to see if there were any from Malmmosevej. There is not. But there is some from the surrounding streets and the station.

If you've got contacts in here in Forum that visits LAK they would be able to find the "Tingbøger" from your Dads time there. I am sorry I live to far away to help you.
Here on AO the land register on real estate in Dronninggård are unfortunately too young: I found Malmosevej 2, matr.nr. 1ds Dronninggård By, Ny Holte quite easy, but oldest info was from 1984.

Thank you for the tip.  In looking through the old København telephone books I noticed several families named Smidth in addition to those named Smidt.  I don't think they are related but I will try to contact them to make sure.
