I have found the marriage of Hans Christensen and Elisabeth Clausdatter and the birth of several of their children.  In all these records he is listed as Hans Christensen and not Hans Christensen Juul.  My question is - why did he add the Juul to his name?  I have run across this with two of my other relatives.  Jørgen Simonsen and his brother Rasmus Simonsen added the name Løndahl about 1750.

Mange tak for din hjælp.

You probably have to look backwards in his fathers or mothers family to find the Juul name.
Did you find his baptism ? Sometimes a surname like that also may come from one of the witnesses to his
baptism or from the priest performing the baptism.

Thank you Ole.  From the gravestone in Søvind kirke I know that he was born in Erholm in 1695.  This is located in Rørup, Vends, Odense and unfortuately those church records only start at a much later date.  Such is the way of genealogy.

It seems there are no records of his parents.

Tusind tak Inger.  In the birth records of his children born in Middelfart it says that he was a forpagter.  What is a forpagter?  Google translate say it is a tenant but it must be something more than that.  After all, he paid 20,000 Rd for Tyrrestrup in 1738.

A forpagter can also be called a lease-holder, in this case of a head farm or an estate.
You are probably aware of this from his time in Assens:

Hej Ole,

Tak for din hjælp.  I have found the births of all of his children except Cecilie Marie Juul who was born c 1733.  I found her confirmation in Søvind, Voer, Skanderborg in 1749, opslag 7, but no information as to where she was baptized.

There was and old Danish noble family Juul. But other families also used the name Juul. So its not certain that he was of noble family, but he might be. Having owned estates as Tyrrestrup and Avnstrup it would be reasonable question, was he noble?

I guess the most complete list over noble families is Finn Holbek site:
http://finnholbek.dk/genealogy/search.php?mylastname=JUUL&lnqualify=equals&mybool=AND

If you look there you will find a number of Juuls.

There is today 4100 persons in Denmark with the familiy name Juul and 16.200 having it as middle name. Only few of them are of noble heritage.

Hej Otto,

There was a thought that my 7th great Grandfather was the illegitimate son of Jørgen Steensen Brahe but then somekind person found a 1751 court record that said he was the son of Jørgen Kjeldsen.  So much for my noble heritage.
