In 1736 my ancestor's husband Hans Christensen Juul bought Tyrrestrup for 20,000 Rd.  Was this a large amount of money?  Tusind tak for dit svar.

Its very difficult to compare prices with today prices but you could buy a large farm for 1000Rdl at that time.
Tyrrestrup was an estate and 20.000Rdl definitely was a large sum of Money.

I have seen prices on cattle in 1720. A cow was sold for 2Rdl  and a a good couple of horses for 16Rdl.

Today Tyrrestrup has arround 600acres. Around 1900 it had 2000acres, 200 years ago it would probably have been even larger.

The main house from 1720 still exist.

Mange tak Otto.  What a beautiful house.  By the way, her uncle Steen Jørgensen owned Aunsbjerg estate.

Aunsbjerg is known in Danish litterature from the Danish novelist Steen Steensen Blicher, his uncle owned it and Blicher wrote the novel, The Hunter on Aunsbjerg. The story is stilll worth reading.

According to a consumer price index 1502-2007 published on the homepage of Danmarks Nationalbank (The Danish Central Bank) the index had a value of 0.1114 in 1736 with 2000=100.
The December 2013 CPI was 129.9 so Danish consumer prices today are 1166 times higher than in 1736.

Since 1736, Denmark has changed its monetary unit 2 times:

by the national bankruptcy in 1813 6 Rigsdaler Kurant was exchanged for 1 Rigsbankdaler and
at the transition from the silver to the gold standard in 1875, the current monetary unit, Kronen (DKK), was defined as ½ Rigsdaler Rigsmønt (in 1854 the Rigsbankdaler was renamed Rigsdaler Rigsmønt).

Therefore 3 Rigsdaler Kurant = 1 Krone and the value in todays Kroner of 20,000 Rigsdaler Kurant in 1736 is 1166/3x20000 ~ 7,771,435 DKK2014

The 2012 Purchasing Power Parity between USD and DKK was 10.1643 DKK per 1.33169 USD or 1 USD2012 ~ 7.63 DKK2012

20,000 Rdl. Kurant1736 ~ 1,018,185 USD2012

The weekly wage of Copenhagen workmen in 1736 was 1 Rigsdaler Kurant with a purchasing power of 51 USD2012
