Help reading 1801 census
« Dato: 01 Jan 2011 - 02:09 »
Hi I would like help reading 1801 census for Lendum page 16 Line 3 and 4. Is Peder Thomsen
related to Jens Pedersen? On DIS translated census it says Peder Thomsen Enke, Mandens stiffader, I know Enke is widower but I cannot find a translation for Mandens stiffader.  I found a birth for Jens Pedersen May 29 1763  page 56 Lendum but the fathers name is different I think. On the 1897 census Peder Thomsen is the right father for Jens. Did the priest make a mistake in 1801 or was he just a poor writter or I am just a poor reader?  Thank you for your help. George

Older Danish usage is stiffader, English stepfather, replaced eventually by stedfader, 'replacement' father.  My 1830 Danish dictionary says that 'stif' is really more correct.

Ergo, you can find Peder Thomsen married to Jens's mother before 1787.  There is a fair chance that Jens's mother is in the 1787 folketælling.  In 1787 you can check whether husband or wife has been married more than once.  Jens's mother should appear as married two or more times.  Find her through ddd, choose 'vis alle felter' and look for Nr. ægteskab:

Would be helpers find it easier to look at the Lendum parish register with amt and herred given.

Hi Ralph
Thanks for your help. I think I found Jens mother married to Peder Thomsen P 13 1749-1816
Lendum, Horns, horring Sept 27 1767. I think Peder was Johanne's 2rd husband. I could not see what you were referring to on ddd.
Thank you again George

Peder Tomsens marriage:

Brides home: Lendum Annexgaard

Karlen Peder Tomsen Elling and widow Johanne Mikkelsdatter,
betrothed 9 June, i.e. Pentecost Tuesday, the third day of the festival,
married 27 September, i.e. Trinity XV Sunday

Guarantors Jens Jensen Kieltved of Elling parish
Niels Olesen, Lendum

Finding Johanne married <1763 and widowed 1763-1767 will require a bit of combing the records.

Jens was baptized 29 May 1763, his father Peder Jensen.  Through the beginning of the 18th century names were sometimes Johan vs. Johand, as it later is Johanne vs. Johannes.

Here is Johanne under 'Vis alle felter', when searched under her name.
