Odense, Baag, Haarby churchbook 1813-1824 opslag 67 #10

Confirmation for Kirsten Madsdatter in 1821.  I see the father is Mads Pedersen.  What is the mother's name?  Looks like "Karen" not "Maren", and the last name confuses me since it's broken onto the next line.  Nielsdatter perhaps? but that doesn't look like an "N" to me.

If it is of any help I believe their marriage is on the Haarby churchbook 1730-1828 opslag 298 marriage #5 (28 November 1806 I believe)

In the marriage it looks like "Maren Mands__dsdatter"

PS-from the marriage record can you tell me where Mads Pedersen is from?  I'm trying to locate him on the 1801 Census and I'm wondering if he's the bachelor in Haarby on the 1801 census.

Is this Mads Petersen's baptismal record, I really struggle to read it:

Odense, Baag, Køng 1687-1779 opslag 106 (about halfway down on the right hand side)  It looks like the baptismal date is 6th post Trin. 1796.  I just can't make out the parents names to confirm they are Peder Larsen and Kirsten Madsdatter whom you gave me above.  It's the right year to be Mads and I do see the house name "Gummerup" so I feel this is him, I want to make sure.

So do you think that baptism record is for the Mads I am looking for?

I would imagine of his father Peder was a blacksmith, it makes sense for Mads to be a blacksmith as well, right?  It's odd to me Peder is listed as "Peter Smed" and not listed by his full name "Peder Larsen" on the baptism.

Hi Erik,

I think you've found the baptism record for the Mads you're looking for, born 1769.

His older brother is on opslag 99, right hand page, in the same church book:

19de Trin: [28 Oct.] blev døbt Peder Smeds Søn i Gumme-
rup nafnlig Hans...

Hans is seen together with the parents in the 1787 census (see my posting 26 Dec. 2012), which also reveals that both blacksmith Peder Larsen and his wife Kirsten Madsdatter are in their 1st marriage. The same marriage info is found in the 1801 census.

In those days, it was quite common to use a byname indicating occupation or place of residence, instead of the patronymic. That's also the case for the witnesses at Mads' baptism.

As for the error in Kirsten Madsdatter's confirmation record 1821, I have no explanation. The church book on Arkivalieronline is that of the parish clerk. Maybe the mother's name is correct in the vicar's book, which can be seen at the Provincial Archives in Odense.
