I have found a marriage for a Frimodt, who I believe could be my 4th great grandfather.  The record is entry #5 opslag 502 of the 1743-1786 Horsens vor Frelser, Nim, Skandeborg.
Would someone kindly take a look at it, as it is poorly written and reproduced, to the extent that I can only read his surname and the marriage date of 18 May.  I cannot read his christian name nor the name of his bride. ???

Thanks for all the information.  I had the census records and what is very interesting is the 1769 record that notes that Sara and Anne Else are half sisters which means that Niels was married twice.  I have the birth records and Herr Frimodt is recorded as the father and no mother is noted.

I will now start looking at all the hints and links you have sent me and see if I can untangle the confusion.

My research on the Frimodt family is leaving me somewhat confused.  Anna Else Frimodt, born about 1754, is my 4th great grandmother.  On finding the marriage record for Neils Frimodt and Karen Hofgaard I thought they were her parents and my 5th great grandparents.  It now looks like this may not be the case.  Firstly that I could not find Anna Else's birth record.  Secondly the 1769 census record Anna Else is noted as a half siser to Sara Kierstine even though Neils Frimodt and Karen Hofgaard were married in 1751.  And thirdly this link you sent me from the Nygaard collection ( http://ddd.dda.dk/nygaard/visning_billed.asp?id=103783&sort=e ) does not list Anna Else as one of the children.

I went throught the Horsens list of probates, but did not find anything on Neils Frimodt.  The Viborg list of probates is quite extensive and without a 'search program' to look for specific names it would be a little too daunting for me to go through name by name.

I am not giving up, but I will need some time to consider my next step.

Hi Peter,

Maybe the 1769 census should be interpreted so that Anne Else Frimodt is the half-sister of Niels Frimodt? Please note that the surname of the daughter Sara Kirstine is not mentioned. I think the text in the brackets has been added by the person, who transcribed the census, or there's a misunderstanding in the original census - hence the question marks. Unfortunately, the images of FT-1769 are not available on ArkivalierOnline.

http://ddd.dda.dk/nygaard/visning_billed.asp?id=103777&sort=e (See Beder, P.)

3 Dec. 1783 Anna Else Frimodt is married to Peder Beder, merchant in Nyborg, widower.
According to Nygaard, the record says "my sister Anna Else Frimodt":
http://ddd.dda.dk/nygaard/visning_billed.asp?id=21559&sort=e

Niels Frimodt dies in 1785:
http://ddd.dda.dk/nygaard/visning_billed.asp?id=103787&sort=e

- so he performed the marriage of his (half-)sister Anna Else in 1783 :)

Compare this note from 1771 "Sara Kirstine Frimodt my daughter" [dtr = datter]:

I found this information online:

Niels Mikkelsen (5)
F. i Norup 1718 - d. i Horsens 27.10.1785.

Looking in the 1646-1781, Norup, Lunde, Odense churchbook on opslage 406, I have found what I assume is the birth record of Anna Else.  As best as I can read it, she was born in 1754 to Michel Frimodot of Norup.

In the same churchbook on ops 290, the birth record from Niels Mikkelsen Frimodt can be found. If I read it right,  his father was also Michel Frimodt.

Anna Else Frimodt was confirmed in Horsens in 1769 at age 15 (ops 138 no 23 in 1736-1813 Horsens Vor Fresler)

She named one of her children Karen Hofgaard Beder (ops 816 in 1703-1814 Nyborg, Vindinge, Svenborg).

Here she is in the 1787 census:

København, København (Staden), Købmager Kvarter, Kristen Bernikovs Gade, , 304, 2, FT-1787
Peder Beder   36   Gift   Hosbonde   Fuldmægtig
Ane Else Frimodt   36   Gift   Hans Kone
Ane Marie   7   Ugift   Datter i 2.Ægteskab
Rasmus   6   Ugift   Søn i 2.Ægteskab
Marie Sørens Datter   24   Ugift   Pige   Tienestepige

Hi Sven

The text in the brackets and the question marks in the 1769 census have indeed been added by the transcriber:

http://ddd.dda.dk/asp/doku_uk.asp?indtastningsnr=A7881

Name: Anne Else Frimodt   Sex: K   Age: 15   Marital status: -
Occupation: -
Census year: FT-1769   County: Skanderborg   District: Nim   Parish: Horsens Købstad   Place name: Søndergades roede
Title no /address: Søndergade   Household-/ family no: S168   Source entry no: A7881   Record no: 2172
Comments: "fruentimmer fra 8 til 16 aar incl" ?? er hun ikke for ung til at være halvsøster til Niels Frimodt
["females from 8 to 16 years incl" ?? is she not too young to be Niels Frimodt's half-sister]

In the censuses, the relationship mentioned under "Occupation in household" [which I would translate 'Position in household'] is usually the relationship to the head of the household, and that is the case here, too.

According to the document http://www.frimodt.com/billeder/sl%C3%A6gt.pdf, which Lissa found for you, Niels Mikkelsen Frimodt was born in Norup, a parish in Odense county, Lunde district on Funen (Fyn).

Anna Else was born in the same parish, please refer to AO, Norup, Lunde, Odense 1646-1781, opslag 406:

Anno 1754 (June 16)
Dom: 1 post Trinit. døbt Michel Smeds datter
af Norup nomine Anna Else, frembaaren af Jfr Holst
..............

Michel Michelsen Frimodt was married at least twice:

1) Norup 1646-1781, opslag 269:

1711 (31 May)
Dom. Trinitatis blefve viede Mi-
chel Michelsen Frimuth og Anna
Jørgensdatter boende udi Noorop.

- Their son Johan, born 28 April 1715, is on opslag 278. Father's name is Michel Michelsøn. Among the witnesses Michel Frimuth.

- Niels, born 23 Jan. 1718, is on opslag 290. Father's name is Michel Smid.

2) Norup 1646-1781, opslag 391:

Anno 1749
Die 12 Decemb: var Michel Michelsen
Smed i Norup og Karen Jørgensdatter
fra Egense ægteviede.

- Egense is a place name in Norup parish.

In the document Lissa found for you, Michel Michelsen Frimodt is said to have been a publican in Kerteminde, later in Norup, according to information from the Provincial Archives in Odense. Maybe the byname "Smed" (blacksmith) refers to the occupation of his father Michel Frimodt?

Thank you all for your help.  It now makes some sense that Anna Else is a half sister to Neils Frimmodt and NOT to Sara Kierstine.  I will be spending the day reviewing all this new information and correcting my family tree.
