Hey, I'm improving.  :D

Thanks Lissa.

Isn't it unusual for a boy to be about four years old when baptised?

Maybe Bob knows his own family story explaining this. I don't mean to pry.

Lissa Pedersen

Mette Helene Karoline Kristine Erikmine Køhler born 14 Dec 1868 - image 51 (1859-1878) in Tilst parish, Hasle district, Aarhus county - to unmarried Maren Pedersen and alleged father widower and ?? Henrich Frederich Køhler.

Cannot read much of the rest - experts must give a hand.

Lissa

Jane C

So possibly Mette Helene Karoline K.E.'s father is a baptismal sponsor for her child.

Bob, do you have his trips to USA?

He made trips to New York as a fireman on the steamships Hellig Olav and Oscar II in 1917, 1918, 1920, and 1923.

Then on 29 April 1926 he arrived New York as a passenger on the S. S. Arabic from Southampton, listed as a farmer, nearest relative wife Mrs A. F. K. Frandsen in *Vestire, Laso, his destination a friend Carl Thane in "Porchester" New York (Port Chester).

*Laso apparently should be Læsø, Maribo.  His wife Alma Klvine and daughter Agnete arrived NY from Copenhagen 4 Aug 1926 on the S. S. United States, destination Port Chester NY.

In 1930 census the family was in East Port Chester, Connecticut.

Everyone - I can't tell you how impressed I am with the rapid and fantastic response you all have made to my one posting.  It has been truly impressive.

I have no information about the delay in baptism;  news to me and my family.  I will send what you have all posted to my aunt in Colorado (I'm in Florida), who I spoke to today by phone.  She will be as thrilled as me.

Final posting:  thank you for it.  My maternal grandmother was Alma Elvine Christensen of Laeso.  Born I believe in Vestero and connections to a very old church in Byrum.

Thank you all so much, again.

P. S.  Is it really 1-2 am in Denmark for those of you contributing, or are you from the US like me?  Thanks, truly, again.

Nice to hear back from you Bob.  The Danes drop out gradually at bedtime. The night is young for us Yankees. Although not so young that I'm working on your project. I'm not.  :D

Another poster, Ingrid, is from Australia, and we always know today what she's going to say tomorrow.

About the baptism, it might be just the recording of the baptism in the home parish that was delayed, which could happen for several reasons, such as pastor Christensen's ADD (LOL), but we'd probably expect a note stating this.

About Læsø, since you and Homer obviously know where it is, I looked it up. Wikipedia: Also called "Isle of Hlér," it's the largest island in the North Sea bay of Kattegat, 12 miles off the northeast coast of Jutland. Læsø is also the name of the municipality (Danish, kommune) on that island. The main town is Byrum.

Lovely!

Looks like the mother to Niels Andreas Christensen is Ingeborg Sofie Christine Sørensen, married name Christensen. Niels's maternal grandfather must be Søren Christen Poulsen of Vesterø sogn, and his maternal grandmother Ane Marie Kirstine Nielsdatter of Byrum sogn.

This grandfather may be the source of all the "Poul" names in the siblings of Alma Elvine Christensen.

So we have discarded the notion that the family came from Odense, yes? Perhaps Henrik Frederik moved there at some later time.

Thought we should maybe make this explicit - just in case.

I guess Ingeborg's mother is not Ane Marie Nielsdatter. Ane Marie is a later wife to Søren Christen Poulsen.

Jane - My prior reply may have been struck by the sun's recent activity - it never showed up here.  I will wait on giving up on Odense until I find his birth record, given the 4 year gap until the Sabro baptism.  My aunt Agnethe said she kidded her father Henry (Henrik) for being from the place where Hans Christian Andersen lived.

I still want to say how thankful I am for all the help;  quite a blessing.  Where are you from, "yankee"?
(just generally - I too don't wish to pry.)

Hi,

Henrik Frederik Køhler Frandsen!!

born 13 Aug 1889 in Lading parish, Sabro district, Århus county - image 44 in Lading parish (1876-1892)
bapt. 23 May 1893 in Sabro parish, Sabro district, Århus county - image 3 in Sabro parish (1892-1911) - here it says that at the time of his birth the family was living at Lading Mark (Fajstrup), i.e. Lading parish.

Lissa

PS: I'm in Denmark, a bit south of Copenhagen

Lissa Pedersen

Hi,

Final proof:

Look at Henrik's confirmation in Sabro parish - image 84 (1892-1911) - confirming his birth in Lading parish and his baptism in Sabro parish!!

Lissa

Lissa Pedersen

In the 1906 Sabro census you will find the Frandsen family - image 34:

Jørgen Frandsen
Mette Frandsen
Frands Chr(istian) Frandsen b. 1893
Jenny Frandsen born 1895
Thorvald Frandsen b. 1897
Karla Frandsen b. 1899
Dagny Frandsen b. 1900
Alvilda Frandsen b. 1904

On image 3 in Sabro parish (1892-1911) you will find Frands Christian Frandsen born 2 Feb 1893 - and baptised 22 May - same day as his brother Henrik!! - this solves the "problem"!!

Eureka Lissa! Congratulations on finding that!

Too bad about the solar flares Bob; they hurt genealogists everywhere. I'm glad I got here before you, so I can help you not be too disappointed that Henry wasn't born in Odense. I too was not born in Odense, yet look at me - just thrilled to be alive. Besides, Henry did live in Odense amt, as John has shown. Maybe he also lived in the town of Odense at some point? Either way, it can be said that he came from Odense, although not born there.

So there, nitpickers!

As for where I'm from, I think we've covered that - not Odense. But yes, like you, I am an American, one who's delighted to discover these wonderful findings by the forum.

Back on a quiet Saturday morning with a possible ancestry for Alma Elvine Christensen's mother
Ane Sørine Madsine Christensen. (Bob you may already have this.)

I think her father may be the Niels Peter Christensen in these links:

http://www.vaeversted.com/a/per01297.htm#0

http://geneablog.kilokilokilo.dk/slaegtstrae/getperson.php?personID=I7743&tree=slaegtstrae

Another source, named in the links: book "Læsø boere der rejste ud" (Læsø inhabitants who left)

If the churchbooks support this theory, then Bob you have such a very interesting family! (I am hopeless at checking churchbooks.)

Christen Jørgensen Kiil 36 gift manden skoleholder og ?? [born about 1765]
   [school teacher and kirkesanger/cantor/parish clerk]
Maria Rasmusdatter 35 gift konen -
Lars Christensen 4 - deres barn [ = Lars Christian Kiil in 1834]

Jane C

Okay, I see a more secure connection:

From the Kenneth Knudsen website, above, "The Kiil family originates in Horne Sogn at Hirtshals in Vendsyssel. The name Kiil comes from Kiilgård, also spelled Kilegård. (gaard = farm)....To my knowledge, there is only one (original) Kiil family in Denmark. There is a Norwegian family of the name, but they are not connected to the Danish family."

In 1880 Ane Sørine Madsine Christensen has a brother Kristen Kiil Kristensen.

Together, these facts suggest Bob does indeed descend from the Kiil clan.

Jane C

Back from a walk, during which I remembered I was going to point out that the
Niels Peter Christensen (as shown in the 1880 census)
has a first-born son named Kristen Kiil (= Christen Kiil),
and a first-born daughter named Ane Serine (= Ane Sørine).
These are the names of the parents I've tentatively identified - which follows the traditional Danish naming practice.
