Found this posting by Lis. B. Jensen on GenCircle from 2008.  So someone else has researched him, but I still would like to find those records and verify...  I am going to try an access those records today, now that my partner is back and can help me with the JAVA problem.

Jane, I did note that Christen Sønneberg (father of Peter, and *hopefully* Christian) was a corporal.  There is a rumor in the Sonderberg family that we are descended from a famous sea captain in Denmark. (This rumor comes from my grandpa, great grandson of Peter Sonderberg)  Seeing all of these boatmen does make me smile.  :-)  I do love the fact that the sea has "flowed through their lives", as you put it.  I've always loved great bodies of water.  In fact, I am now living on the Mississippi river (up in Wisconsin) and can see it flowing outside my window as I type.

Is it unusual, in the mid-1700's, that Christen uses the name "Sønneberg" instead of a patronymic name?

Maybe that is a question for the pastor in Bogø?

Kirsten, thanks for the link to Bogø Tidende!  That looks very interesting and I would love to see the photographs of the island and learn more about the history.

Hi Anna!

Very fun to hear more about the family in New Orleans, earlier, and now as you expand with this story from Denmark. I can visualize you (not in sharp focus) : D with the great Mississippi below you, its current pulling you to the sea captains of your past.

About this: "Found this posting by Lis. B. Jensen on GenCircle from 2008.  So someone else has researched him, but I still would like to find those records and verify..."

Kirsten DID look at the records and posted one. I think Kirsten is saying no such person (Christen as brother to Frederik Christensen) is found in the churchbook. She does find another Christen, Christen Pedersen, born 1808. He is in Nyebye in 1834, and Frederik is too. So maybe that is the Christen who becomes Christen Sonderberg in New Orleans. He still can be a relative. At least a neighbor/friend.

You ask, "Is it unusual, in the mid-1700's, that Christen uses the name 'Sønneberg' instead of a patronymic name?" Seems normal to me.

Anna Elmhorst

I just found this record for Christian Sonderberg on ancestry.com.

This would confirm that he is a brother to Frederik Christensen and uncle to Peter Sonderberg... probably the Christian Sonderberg that died in New Orleans in 1866 at "56 years" (per his grave stone)

Could it be that this record has not yet been added to the online database?  I know it is still a work in progress...

Jane C

Well, Anna, Ancestry doesn't lie. You solved the riddle - Yeah!
Good ole Uncle Chris probably helped Peter get started in the USA.

Anna Elmhorst

I hope so  :)  I am going to continue researching Peter Sonderberg and hopefully dig up some more records to add to the pile of evidence.  I've ordered a look-up of his naturalization records from the public library in New Orleans.  Maybe they will specify where in Denmark he came from?

Thanks for those links Homer.  On the first link was the line "Take a walk in the town of Bogø. Begin at the church. Notice the many sailors' graves in the church yard, we are on a sailors' island."  I wonder if any of these people we have been researching could be buried there... I'm going to write to the current pastor and see if there is any way to look that up.

Hi again Anna,
Sounds like a good plan.

We haven't found the ancestors for Frederik Christensen's wife (Ane Margrethe Christiansdatter).
1850 census says she's born at Damsholte on Møen.
1845 census says she's born at Møen, Stege.
Damsholte is a village near the larger town of Stege. I think that's the place that's meant. (I find the reference a little confusing though, since Damsholte and Stege are also sogns).
Her birth year varies a little in the census data from 1796-1799.

In 1801 I have so far found only one girl with the right name in Mønbo herred.

1801
Præstø, Mønbo, Fanefjord, Dame, , 18, FT-1801, b9310
Christian Michelsen 61 Gift Mand Huusmand med Jord
Kirsten Sindelsdatter 36 Gift hans Kone [Christian Michelsen]
Ane Margrethe Chr:Datter 4 - deres barn [Christian Michelsen og Kirsten Sindelsdatter]

A family with a possible connection (a Sindel Zacariesen) lives in Gammelbye in 1801, where Peter Vilhelm's grandparents (Kristen Kristensen Sønneberg family) also lived in 1801.

Mvh

Thanks Jane!  I'll look more into that later this week -- right now I'm getting ready to be out of town for a few days for work.  I'll hopefully be back to the research on Thursday.  Thanks for all your help with this.  I really appreciate it and it is more fun to be working on this with someone else.  :-)
