I can not get into Ellis Island even though I am a member, and I now have three times tried to get a new password, but it just will not succeed.
Is there someone who will find the surname HYNDING, I know it shows 2 documents but can not be allowed to see them, and would you tell me what is on them so I can move forward, there should be more people, the woman I look after have 5 children. I am not fully aware of all the children traveled to the United States. They traveled via Hamburg, i think, so I can not find them in our DK archive.
Mother named Anna Christina Diederichsen but the children all called Hynding.
Anna and her children immigrated in America after Lauritz (her husband) passed away in 1869.
Anna would be dead in Humboldt County, California but when I do not know.
Mange tak Lis

Hi Lis,

The two Hynding's listed by Ellis Island are a Christ 37 who arrived 1892 and a Hans M. 20 who arrived 1903, so not Anna.

Anna listed 1878 as immigration year in the US censuses:

1880 Humboldt County California
Anna Hynding 53 Denmark, Cook
Nick John Hynding 19 Denmark, Laborer

1900 Humboldt County California
John P. Hynding, widow, Jul 1864 Germany, parents born Denmark, to US 1878
Jenny L. Hynding, daughter, Apr 1887 Calif
Annie C. Hynding, mother, Oct 1824 Denmark, to US 1878

1910 Humboldt County California
Elle P. Nisson 65 Denmark, to US 1870
Marie Nisson 56 Denmark, to US 1877
Anna C. Hynding 85 Denmark, to US 1878

This must be Anna and her son:

Hamburg passenger lists, ship Herder, departed 8 May 1878 for New York:
Anna Heynding 40
Joh Heynding 9

New York arrivals, ship Herder, 21 May 1878
Anna Heyding 40 Prussia
Johann Heyding 9 "

Maybe a daughter:
ship Herder, arrived New York from Hamburg 25 Apr 1877
Anna Hynding 20, unmarried, Germany

Found this photo on "Billion Graves."
ANNA HYNDING
1824-1914

This website says Anna Hynding is buried at Ferndale Cemetery.  So is Mathilda Christine Hynding (1867-1891) and as noted above Rasmine Jansen Hynding (1866-1936)

-------------------------------------

An Anna Hynding is listed in this book:

St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Ferndale, Calif: Methodist-Episcopal Church, Ferndale, Calif. [and] Danish-Lutheran Church, Ferndale, Calif

If this is "our" Anna, she may be in their cemetery.

Link to the book (which apparently can be purchased):

Also google ALAN A. HYNDING an author who has written some history books about this area of California.

Hi Lis - it could be Christian's name of Johansen Hynding is just a coincidence. I thought you might have him on your larger family tree.

John Hynding (son of Jesse Hynding) registers for the draft (World War I) in
Gonzalez, Monterey, California.
His registration says he was born 24 December 1893 in Ferndale, California.
He is single, a farm laborer.

John's mother is Mathilde. (1900, 1910 census etc) (obviously not the Mathilde who died 1891).

John could be the grandfather to the woman who posted this note online in 1998:
"My great grandmother Mathilde Nielsen Hynding died in Gonzales [in Monterey County, California] on December 11, 1935. Is there anyway I could get her obituary from the newspaper there? Any information you can send me will be greatly appreciated."

So there's a living descendant who was working on the family history....

:)

John Hynding b. 1893 died 29 Oct 1975 in Monterey County.

Jane C

Lis - thanks for the link to the father of Alan Hynding (Norman). Obit says Norman Hynding is the son of Andrew Hynding. Looks like Andrew is the son of that Christian Johansen Hynding we found earlier. See 1900 census in Redwood City, San Mateo, California (Christian's children Andrew, Cecelia, Dagmar). San Mateo County is also where Andrew Hynding registered for the draft WWI.

Jane C

Anna Marie Hynding married Elle Peter Nissen
19 OCT 1877  Eureka, Humboldt, California (per IGI)
and she immigrated April 1877 (as Homer posted).
Thus the mother and other children are likely to have headed straight for Humboldt County, California, when they followed in 1878. So Nicoline, if she came to USA, should most likely be in the area too.
So it's surprising not to find her. Did she maybe stay in Denmark, Lis? I guess you are wondering too...

I think the records below are Nicoline, and that she was called Lena, maybe Line in Denmark. She is called Lisse in 1880 census in Bear Creek, so that is why we missed her. (Lena and LEE-sa can sound alike).

Holy..........Jane you have been buzy

I will spend the next couple hours to put everything you have found in the system and that is what has come out of Anna Christine Hynding.

After Laurits was dead Anna came to America, most of her kids are at that time already in America. She uses the name in America Hynding and give up in the censuses that she arrives in the U.S. the 1878th Something Tryde that she traveled with the ship Herder from Hamburg May 8, 1878 and arrived in New York May 21, 1878, she traveled with Johan Peter Hynding nine years. The first time we encounter her in the census 1880 Humbolt County, California, where she works as a chef. In 1900, she lives with John and his daughter and in 1910 she lives with Anna Marie and her husband, it does not look that Anna Christine get married again in America. Anna Christina died in 1914 and is buried in the Danish-Lutheran Church, Ferndale, Calif..

Lis Nielsen

Johan Nikolaj Hynding

Johan Nicholas also travel to America. The first time we encounter him in 1880 in the censuses of Bear River and Eagle Prairie, Humboldt, California,Where he calls himself Nick John Hynding and is an laborer. In 1888, he registered to vote in Santa Cruz, California.

Lis Nielsen

Jes Johansen Hynding.

Jes Johansen also travel to America. In America, he called himself Jessie Hynding, evidence suggests he traveled to America in 1874. The first time we find him in 1880 in the censuses of Bear River and Eagle Prairie, Humboldt, California. Because he lives with Fred Richardson and his family and works as a dairyman. In 1888, he registered to vote in Santa Cruz, California. In 1900 we find him in the census of Iceland Ferdale, Humbolt, California where he is married to Mathilda Hynding and they have at the time 5 children. In 1910, they still live in Humbolt and still live at home 2 children (John and Annie). In 1930, he is 71 years and resides in Eureka, Humbolt, Califorien together with his wife, who is he Building carpenter. Jes door panel 20 June 1932 and is buried at Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery, Eureka, Hombolt, California.

Lis Nielsen

Johan Peter Hynding.

Evidence suggests that Johan Peter traveled with his mother to America May 8, 1878 via Hamburg by ship Herder and they arrived in New York May 20, 1878. 1880 he lives in Bear River and Eagle Prairie, Humboldt California.
In 1900 we find him in the census of Humbolt County, California with his daughter and mother. In 1920, he lives with his daughter and her husband in Eden, Alameda, California and there he is a widow. 1930 he is in Ferndale, Humbolt, California with Rosmini Hynding and there he Buschaufør.

Lis Nielsen

Anna Marie Hynding

It seems that Anna travels to America by ship Herder from Hamburg on 25 April 1877. 1910 Anna Marie lives with her husband and her mother in Humbolt County, California. 1920 lives in Ferndale, Humboldt, California. 1930 Anna lives in Pale Alto, Santa Clara, California, along with Christine, Marie and Helen Cummings.Anna dies in 1947, Santa Clara, California.

I've been looking for a database where I can find all the information you have found. Is there a link i can give me so I can manage.
birth data, 1 world war and so on.....

Jane C

Hi Lis - You have written a very good summary of what the team found! I like the way you write it - makes the information "come together."

About sources - Ellis Island did not open until 1892, so to find the earlier immigration record, Homer must have looked at Ancestry.com.

Ancestry.com had all the census records I posted and probably the same for Homer. That's a subscription site (pay to use it). www.ancestry.com It's not too expensive to join if just for a short while.

Ancestry.com lets us see original records for census, immigration, draft registration, and others. It is hard to upload them to DIS-Danmark though.

Ancestry.com doesn't let me see original records for death and birth and marriages. So  only see a transcription of some (not all) of the information on the record. So in that case, the DIS posts for you are the same as what I see on Ancestry. (I don't know if that's true for everyone - because Ancestry has different "levels" of membership.)

Ancestry.com also includes information from people - and that kind of information is not reliable.

Another good site, free, is Family Search:
https://www.familysearch.org/

The IGI record I found - that is International Genealogical Index. Family Search site includes it. This is not reliable information - so we need real records to confirm the information. Here is a link:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=search_all1.asp&clear_form=true

Ancestry.com had the voter registration lists. The Hynding men are listed in more years. I only named one or two years to show they were citizens and voted in America. Women could not vote in the USA at that time.

Ancestry.com had the draft records.

Find a Grave was another source. Below is a link to the burial of Morris Hynding. A Morris Hynding lived in Illinois when Nicoline married Edlef Christensen there, yet this Morris Hynding is buried in California. Maybe you know if he is a cousin or not. It would be interesting to know why Nicoline headed to Illinois. The link:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Hynding&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSst=6&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=79472632&df=all&

The Sorted-by-Name site - again, not reliable and we need real records to confirm. The link:  http://sortedbyname.com/index.html

Here's a Rootsweb family tree for Anna Marie Hynding/Elle Peter Nissen:
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~banister/wc51/wc51_404.htm

I have the following notes I don't think I gave to you? from Ancestry.com

19 JAN 1883 Jesse became a US citizen (Humboldt County, California records).

I cropped the immigration record. (Anna and son are almost at the bottom - three people are below them on the list). Then I resized the image to "blow it up." I don't think this is working very well for you to see. This record is very very hard to see on Ancestry.com.
