Hi Colleen,

I have made a reference to this posting on the other forum.

Have you checked any American censuses and do you have the wedding certificate? .. and do you have any place names - in Denmark? Did the wedding take place in Minnesota?

Hi Colleen,

The only one I could find in the Danish emigration database (www.ddd.dda.dk) is:

Name:  Larsen, Carl Occupation:  Tyende (m. by)
Age:  21 Destination:  Alb. Lea, Min.
Contract no.:  122900 Registration date:  5/26/1885
Last res. parish:  København Last res. county:  København
Last residence:  Kbhvn. Destination country:  USA
Destination city:  Albert Lea Destination state:  Minnesota
Name of ship:  Geiser
Remarks:  ANM: Geiser. IDcode:  D8385L2606

Did he go to stay with family and/or friends in Minnesota, and have you tried to find his emigration on Ellis Island?

Lissa

colleen stafford

Thanks for your help. I will look into Ellis Island. Possible family in Albert Lea, MN makes some sense because I found my Grandmother, Sena Larsen in the censes there.

I am really lost with this part of the family.

Another possible clue, my father always said that his mother's family were low danes. Does that make any sense?

Lissa Pedersen

Could you give some more info from the census?

Lissa

Hi Colleen,

I think this is the family in the 1920 census

The census says that both Carl and Mary emigrated in 1880 and became US citizens in 1899.

You have the correct censes information, thank you.  I have that as well. Any way that you could find ancestors further back in Denmark?

Colleen

Paul,

Do you have access to other censuses?

Could you perhaps try to find them in other censuses?

A marriage license or papers, if Carl was a soldier, would perhaps help?

Lissa

colleen stafford

I believe they married in Minnesota, because it appears that Mary Hansen immigrated when she was about 10 years old.

I think that her father's name was Soren Hansen

Paul Londahl-Smidt

Hi Colleen,

You might want to contact the Luck Lutheran Church which started as a Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church  http://www.lucklutheran.org/history.html.  They might have records of the Larsen family or tell you where they are located.  I suspect they might hold the key to the family in Denmark.

Sincerely,
Paul

colleen stafford

You are good Paul! I know that Carl is buried there.  Many, many years ago I visited the cemetary with my father and found his grave. I went back several years ago and could not find it. I will try to contact them.

Thanks for your efforts!

Could you try to find a Soren Hansen and his wife Met? and daughter Mary, b. approx. 1870, in the US 1880 or 1890 census? Could perhaps give a clue. I have found a Søren Hansen, his wife Maren and a son Peter, but no Marie/Mary, emigrating in 1878 from Give, Vejle county .... ? So I guess not the right persons.

Lissa

I just sent an email to the Bone Lake Luthern Church.

Have you looked at the spelling of Larsen? I always heard that they changed it from Laursen or something like it.

Colleen, I think this is their marriage (see census that follows):

Minnesota, Marriages Index, 1849-1950
Name: Carl Larson
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 6 Aug 1887
Marriage Place: St Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota
Spouse's Name: Mary Hanson
Spouse Gender: Female

1895 St Paul, Ramsey County, Minn
Carl Larsen 35 Denmark
Mary " 26 Denmark
Laura " 6 Minn
Myrtle " 5 "
Lettie " 3 "
Ansena " 1 "
(Mary's mother not yet listed with them)

The 1905 Wisc. census shows next two children Fred and Anna also born Minnesota, but I can't find the family in 1900 census, Minnesota or Wisconsin.

This may be Karl's burial, but it shows 1862 birth:

Hi,

I found that burial too but wasn't sure.

Carl listed 1880 immigration in 1910-20 censuses, and if 1862 is correct birth date, this may be him:

Name:  Larsen, Carl Occupation:  Bødkersvend
Age:  18 Destination:  New York
Contract no.:  7500 Registration date:  3/8/1880
Last res. parish:  Ringsted Last res. county:  Sorø
Last residence:  Ringsted Destination country:  USA
Destination city:  New York City Destination state:  New York State
Name of ship:  Harald
IDcode:  D7181L1610

(Arrived New York 7 April 1880, listed Cooper as occupation)

--------------------------------------------------------

This is probably the daughter Ansena:

Minnesota, Births and Christenings Index, 1840-1980
Name: Hansena Fredricka Larsen

Matta Hansen 65 Denmark, going to son Christian Hansen, Minneapolis - isn't he Carl Larsen?

There is a Mette Hansen, age 73, widow, travelling in 1910 (Ellis Island). She is from Løsning. Nearest relative son-in-law Rasmus Bie, Stokkerup. Cannot read her destination.

In the 1901 on Arkivalieronline, opslag 247, there is a Rasmus Bie in Stokkerup. His wife is Ane Else Hansen b. 8 Apr 1866, and living with them is Mette Nielsen, born 4 Aug 1836 in ?, Vejle. She is a widow. Ane Else Hansen is born in Jerlev parish, Vejle county, opslag 106.

Lissa

She was Carl's mother in law, not his mother.  If this was her she may have gone first to a son Christian's and joined her daughter Mary Larsen later.

Yes, yes I know ....

Ane Else Hansen's father was Hans Jørgen Hansen and Mette Nielsen.

Probably wrong persons, since no Maren ...

PS: In 1870 same family also has a daughter Johanne Marie Hansen, 8 years old. She is born 30 Aug 1861 in Jerlev parish, opslag No. 98. There is also a son Hans Christensen Hansen, 6 years old.

Mary's age in the U.S. censuses indicate she was born 1868-1870, so probably wrong family.

But I think the Matta Hansen 65 I listed 1901 and the Mette Hansen 73 you listed 1910 are the same person:

The second page of the 1910 passenger list indicates she was in U.S. before, 1901-1909 Minneapolis, and says she is joining a cousin Ole Nielsen in Brooklyn.

Hansena Fredirika Larsen was my Grandmother and yes, she was born in Stillwater, MN. So this is correct.  Great work!

Thanks for all of the work!
