Hi Lis-

Please say more - there is more than one person with that name in the USA at the time. Mvh

Okay - never mind! - Paul is on the case. :D

Paul Londahl-Smidt

Hej Lis,

According to the manifest of the Gothia, which arrived in New York City on 18 Jun 1894 from Helsingberg Sweden, she was going to Barre, Vermont.  I will try to find her there.

mvh

She has apparently married a Niels Nielsen:

1900 Plainfield, Washington County, Vermont
Niel Neilson born June 1860 Denmark, to USA 1894, married 6 years
Suae Nelson born June 1855 Denmark, to USA 1894, 3 children, 3 living

1910 Plainfield, Washington County, Vermont
Neils Nelson 49 Denmark, to USA 1893, married 15 years
Sorina Nelson 54 Denmark, to USA 1894, 3 children, 3 living

1920 Plainfield, Washington County, Vermont
Neils Nelson 59 Denmark, to USA 1893
Serma Nelson 64 Denmark, to USA 1894

1930 Plainfield, Washington County, Vermont
Niels Neilsen 69 Denmark, to USA 1894
Sorine Nelson 64 Denmark, to USA 1895

But where are the children?

Good question Homer. I checked all 16 pages of Plainfield census in 1900 - no Nielsen or Pedersen children.

Living with the Nielsens is K.M. Jensen, 20, from Denmark, boarder, farm laborer.

Lis, was Pedersen the birth name for Sorine Sofie? Or married name - Sorine Sofie (?) gift med Pedersen?

What year was she born according to what YOU know? Was it 1855?

Homer Ficken

It is poorly written, but in the 1910 census it looks like Sorine has listed that it was her second marriage, so maybe she left children in Denmark.  (The columns for children apply only to the mother, and not necessarily the father also)

I thought of that - I haven't looked at the passenger manifest, but I considered that if Paul saw children with her on the ship, he would have said so. But maybe not - or maybe they have their father's surname so he didn't identify them as Sorine's children.

Either the 3 children must come from Denmark with her,** or they are children from Niels (because she is married to him her whole time in Vermont). Says they are living - could that be a census error?

Mvh

** I suppose it is a possibility she left them behind! After all, her great-great-granddaughter writes to us from Denmark. : D

Plainmont Cemetery, East Montpelier, Vermont (a pretty spot!)

Buried:

Sorine Nielsen 1855-1932
Niels Nielsen 1860-1937

They are alone.

There were no children with her on the ship, and if they were his children but not hers on the census, the "mother of how many children" columns would be blank, even if his children were listed with them.  I expect Lis will have the answer.

sorine was born on June 20, 1855. She was married to my greatgrandfather*2 Amarius peter larsen in Dk the 14 feb. 1873 and later divorced him, she had 3 daughters with him and one of them went to the usa,( maybe later). The one who is my direct ancestor is Laurine Petrea Larsen, the other two of which one went to the usa is Juliane Mettine Larsen born 24 december 1873 tværsted sogn, hjørring amt and Mette Marie Larsen born 27 august 1877 hjørring sogn.I have not figured out which of the two it was.
Serine was born petersen in Råbjerg parish hjørring county She was the daughter of Peter Mortensen and Johanne Marie Larsdatter.
I think all did a great job, if you new how much time I spent on it and found nothing, I should have just done this sooner.....thanks
and I love google translator but unfortunately I have only found it now or else I had written more in the first post

I think they married in USA, as married women used their husband's surname on the ships to America.   She probably knew Niels since she listed Vermont as destination.  Do you know where she last lived in Denmark?

This may be Niels:

Nils Nielsen 33 from Vrensted, Denmark, arrived New York on the S. S. Virginia from Gothenberg 24 Dec 1893.

I find a Niels Nielsen born Vrensted Parish 7 June 1860, which matches the age in 1900 census.

Lis, can you read the studio address on the photo?

June 17, 1860 has been born a niels nielsen, father named Niels Peter Nielsen, the mother marianne madsdaughter vrendsted parish, county hjørring.

there is no address on the card it says only the J. Bau Studio Barre and something I can not read, not even with a magnifying glass.so it looks like it s right for poul tells of Barre in his first post,
there is no stamp on the card.

The card was sent to my grandmother and says that she must give her hug from her cousin and aunt.
I have one more card and on it she writes that she has strangers to care for her and She writes about a woman named Amalia and her daughter!!!!   and another girl whose name she did not mention, but which she takes care off.

Danish Brotherhood Death Index 1916-1995
has Thomas Chr. Mikkelsen dying 12 May 1920 - Barre, "UT" - can be a transcription error for VT, short for Vermont.

It also lists Thomas Chr. Mikkelsen death 12 May 1920 Barre "UT" so I'm sure it should be VT.  There is no Barre Utah.

Too bad it only lists the men.

Here's where I saw that name Rabjerg before - a genealogy poster wrote: "My grandparents came to Barre, VT [= Barre, Washington County, Vermont, USA] in 1909. Lauritz Christian Larsen and Marie Petrea Johanne Kirstine Jensen (Rabjerg)."

Checking Ancestry, can't find the connection to this family. So many similarities...Larsen, Pedersen, Mortensen, from Rabjerg, Tversted, going to Barre, Vermont.

Their daughter was Dorothy Larsen McAvoy born 1919 in Barre, Vermont, died 2004 in Vermont. I do find they are from Tversted - in July 1909, crossing from Canada to St. Albans, Vermont, are Lars Chr. Larsen 24 and Petrea Marie Larsen 21 along with two other people (Albert Larsen and Wilhelm Chr. Pedersen) from Tversted. Shown as Christian Larsen and Marie in the US census. Marie's death cert shows her father Jens Jensen and mother is a Mortensen.

FYI here's Sorine in 1880:
Hjørring, Vennebjerg, Hjørring Købstad, Markjordene,Vejen udfor Nørregade, matr.44f, Forhuset d, 86, FT-1880, C6694

Sørine Pedersen 24 Gift Husmoder Raabjerg Sogn, Hjørring Amt
Laurine Larsen 4 Ugift deres Datter Tversted Sogn, Hjørring Amt
Marie Larsen 2 Ugift deres Datter Hjørring

Jane C

Sorine had 3 daughters: one went to USA, not Laurine
1. Laurine Petrea Larsen - stayed in Denmark
2. Juliane Mettine Larsen b 24 december 1873 tværsted sogn, hjørring amt
3. Mette Marie Larsen b. 27 august 1877 hjørring sogn

1880 Hjørring, Vennebjerg, Hjørring Købstad
Marius Peter Larsen 34
Sørine Pedersen 24
Laurine Larsen 4 - Tversted Sogn, Hjørring Amt
Marie Larsen 2 - Hjørring

Where's Juliane Mettine?

Hej Lis,

If you have powerpoint you can see Plainmont cemetery (it is #3) at this site http://www.uvm.edu/landscape/learn/Downloads/scrapbooks/Bodies.ppt

You might try e-mailing the town clerk in Plainfield Vermont and see if they have the death and marriage records for Sorine Nielsen and Niels Nielsen.  Tell them that they were married 1894-95 and that Sorine died in 1932 and Niels in 1937.  I would e-mail them, but I think they will work harder for a Dane than a fellow American.

Lis, are you sure two daughters did not emigrate?   This matches Mette Marie born August 1877:

1900 Plainfield, Vermont
Anders Peterseon, May 1864 Denmark, to US 1893, married 2 years
Mary Peterson, Aug 1877 Denmark, to US [blank]
Carrie Peterson, Jan 1898 Vermont

But they are not there later, so maybe returned to Denmark, or moved to Canada, etc.
