"Uden sang"
« Dato: 18 Okt 2011 - 16:43 »
Hello,

Why would a priest note in the burial record that a burial was "without song"?

We discussed the burial of Christopher Chrane in this thread:
http://www.slaegtogdata.dk/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=4c8c97555cf1b927653c9e49e749090b&topic=22090.0

Køge Skt Nikolaj 1785-1815 opslag 48, right side

It looks like the burial recorded below Christopher Chrane's was on the same day. Does that record also say that the second funeral was without song?

Would that have been because it was during Lent? Are there other reasons? I'm curious as to why the priest thought it was important enough to write down.

We ran into one death that was a suicide and that fellow didn't get any funeral at all. But this record doesn't say this death was a suicide.

Thank you for the help!
Mvh
Sallie

Hi Sallie,

The must like reason that the burial was done "uden sang" is that nobody wanted or could pay the clerk or church singer.
Song and bells ringing in connection with church ceremonies were both services that you had to pay for.

Best

Hi John,
Thank you. That sounds reasonable, since we know he was listed as living with someone else. Can you tell if the burial recorded after Christopher Chrane's burial was also without music? I cannot read the words.
Thanks.

Hi Sallie,

The note at the burial below reads "- med Klokker og Sang", with bells and song.

Best
John
