In 1862, Peder Christiansen is the foster son of Christian Pedersen, who in turn is the husband of Johanne Lisbeth Christensdatter.  For more see 1845-1850-1855 census. They are also leaving for America, presumably with the Poulsens. Christian Pedersen came to the parish in November 1834, opslag 277 # 32.

Hans Poulsen came to Sædder for the second time from Vollenslev in May 1860 'sidst tilgang Mai 1860'.

The "missing" Peter and Grandma on the passenger list were there:

Expanding the attached Saedder departure list shows that Johanne 57 was wife of Christian Pedersen 59 and Peder Christiansen is listed with them and all are leaving for America.

Expanding the attached Goethe passenger list shows after the Poulsen family:
C. Petersen 56
Joh'e " 57
Hans  " 29
Pet. " 9
Pet. " 6

Peter age 9 has to be Peter Christiansen Poulsen, mislisted as a Petersen.

1870 Waushara census shows "Christana" Peterson 65 living with a "Sornson" family.

In 1880 Johanna Peterson 75 widow is listed as mother-in-law of Christian Peterson 47

This has to be "Grandma" and Christian Peterson Sr must have died after arrival.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Here are the other three Poulsen children:

Frederik born 24 Sep 1857 (Saedder 1839-1862 opslag 24 #14)

Marie Caroline born 22 Nov 1859 (Vollenslev 1838-1861 opslag49 #9)

Johanne ____? born 19 April 1862 (Saedder 1839-1862 opslag 75 #4)

The handwriting of Peder's birth record is very poor, and I feel the alleged father was supposed to be Hans Poulsen:   Hans' corrected October 1834 birthdate that you found indicates he would have been only 18-1/2 in April 1853, and unable to yet support a wife and child.

Wow - all this is so impressive!

You guys have nailed it.  ;D

Below is an obituary I found for the youngest Paulsen child, Johanna (Anna), published in 1919 in Poysippi. I paired it with your findings to summarize the longish discussion - and to show how closely the Danish and US records match.

The obit:
"Anna Elizabeth Paulson was born in Denmark April 18, 1862, and when she was three weeks old the family left their Danish home for America, arriving at Pine River, Wisconsin, in August, the ocean trip alone taking nine weeks and three days. Three weeks after reaching Pine River the father died, leaving the mother with five young children to rear and a blind mother to care for. In her blindness the grandmother did all the knitting for the family and other helpful tasks...."

Anna's obit says she is survived by three brothers and one sister:

1. P.C. Paulson of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin
U.S. census gives Peder Charles Paulson birth date as April 1853
= Peter Christiansen born on 23 Apr 1853 in Saedder parish, Praesto amount (church book records for 1839-1866, opslag 18 #7), parents unmarried; mistakenly listed on immigration manifest as Peder Petersen - he is traveling with grandparents Christian Petersen and Johanna Lisbeth Christensdatter. His middle name of Charles seems a  little weird, but the depth of the rest of the evidence overrides my discomfort with that.

2. W.H. Paulson of Poysippi, Wisconsin
Found as Hans Walter Paulson in early U.S. census, and listed as Walter H. Paulson in later census, has 1900 US census birth date of May 1856. Walter fits as an Americanization of Waldemar. Hans Walter lives next door to brother Peder in Poysippi, Waushara, Wisconsin.
= Hans Waldemar Paulson b. 12 May 1856 Saedder, Praesto (opslag 22 #9)

3. F.A. Paulsson of Prospect, Virginia (found in Poysippi, Waushara, Wisconsin in early census years)
= Frederik born 24 Sep 1857 (Saedder 1839-1862 opslag 24 #14)

4. Mrs. Mary Chase of Oregon
Mary C. Chase (records show she married Harvey Chase) has birth date of Nov. 1859 in U.S. census
=  Marie Caroline born 22 Nov 1859 (Vollenslev 1838-1861 opslag49 #9)

5. Anna Elizabeth Paulson herself is the fifth Paulsen child.
Obit gives birth date as 18 Apr 1862, immigrated as a baby three weeks old.
= Johanne ____? born 19 April 1862 (Saedder 1839-1862 opslag 75 #4) [name and baptism columns left blank, with note last column re America). The 1862 Saeder church book record of the family leaving Saeder parish to go to America is hard to read; the guess of "Johanne Eurabelle? Poulsen 4 mos?" could be Johanne Elisabeth.

MOTHER and FATHER
Mary, with married name Paulson, whose tombstone reads "Mother, 12 Feb 1828..."
= Karen Marie Hansen, born 02 Febr, 1828 at Sæder, Sædder, Præsto, Denmark, source the Sæder churchbook 1814-1839, opslag 126 #2. ...married Hans Poulsen 19 Jan. 1856.

You guys found Hans's birth date (12 Oct. 1834) in the 1849 Vollenslev church book, on his confirmation day (Vollenslev 1838-1861, opslag 59 #1 of 1849) - a fantastic fit with tombstone inscription of 12 Oct. 1833 (my relatives also display this one-year-off phenomenon). And yes, Homer is right Hans can be the likely father of Peder (too bad the church book is so hard to read exactly), Hans being too young at Peder's birth in 1853 and thus the involvement of Peder's grandparents.

GRANDMA
As for Johanne Lisbeth Christendatter's surname, many Danish women in America took on their husbands' surnames, thus I agree she easily could be Johanna Petersen age 75 in 1880.

Paul Londahl-Smidt

I think that the father of Peter, Christian Poulsen, and the other person mentioned in his birth record, Jens Poulsen, are brothers of Hans Poulsen.  All have Poul Olsen and Caroline Jensdatter as parents and were born in Vollerslev.

Hans Poulsen was born 12 Oct 1834, opslag 18 nr 7.

Christian Poulsen was born 25 Feb 1825, opslag 10 nr 2.

Jens Poulsen was born 29 Feb 1832, opslag 14 nr 3.

Poul Olsen and Caroline Jensdatter were married on 26 Jan 1822 in Sædder, opslag 224 nr 2.

Here is the family in the 1834 census

So here's a theory about that 1870 census.
Johanne's daughter Maren immigrates with the family also (see attached manifest). She marries a James Sorensen who has a son James. She and James have twins John and Anna about 1864, then Sarah, Andrew, Encetta, and Sam. See 1870 census, Johanne lives with this family. She is listed as "Christina Peterson," but maybe the census taker heard "Mrs. Christian Peterson."

1870 census Leon, Waushara, Wisconsin
James Sornson 36,
Mary Sornson 39 [born about 1831 in Denmark]
James 13
John and Anna both 6, Sarah 5, Andrew 3, Encenetta 1
Christana Peterson 65 [perhaps the census taker was hearing "Mrs. Christian Peterson"?]

Mary can be Maren in 1834:

1840
Præstø, Bjæverskov, Sædder, Ringsbjerg, Tyendehuus, 2, FT-1840, B4663
Christian Pedersen 37 Gift (married) Jordbruger og arbeidsmand, lever mest af sin jordlod [born about 1803; arrived in Saedder parish in Nov. 1834]
Johanne Christiansdatter 35 Gift Hans kone (his wife) [born about 1805]
Peder Hansen 13 Ugift Deres barn (Unmarried, Their child) [born about 1827]
Karen Marie Hansdatter 12 Ugift Deres barn
Maren Hansdatter 9 Ugift Deres barn [born about 1831][can she be Maren Caroline?]
Ane Sofie Hansdatter 3 Ugift Deres barn [born about 1837]

30 July 1862
Arrival in the port of New York.
Passenger manifest, the ship Goethe
H. Poulsen 27 Denmark
Maria Poulsen 36 "
Hans Poulsen 6 "
Fred Poulsen 4 "
Maria Poulsen 2 "
Johanna Poulsen 9 mos
MAREN HANSEN 31 [born about 1831]
C. Petersen 56 [= Christian Petersen]
Joh'e " 57 [= Johanne Lisbeth Christensdatter Petersen b abt 1805]
Hans " 29 [born about 1833]
Pet. " 9 [born about 1853 = Peter Charles Paulson]
Pet. " 6 = ?[born about 1856]

Okay -- addition:
Paul posted just before me. So the name Caroline IS in the family - and I wondered because in 1880 Johanne is with "Carrie."

1880 census Pine River P.O., Leon, Waushara, Wisconsin
Christian Peterson 47 born about 1833 in Denmark
Carrie W. or M. Peterson 52 wife born about 1828 in Denmark
Sam Sorensen 7 adopted son born about 1873 in Wisconsin
Johanna Peterson 75 MotherL b abt 1805 in Denmark widowed

And can Poul Olsen be:
Præstø, Bjæverskov, Bjæverskov, Kiylerup, , 15, FT-1801, B3769
Hans Andersen 40 Gift Mand Huusmand med jord
Sidse Jørgensdatter 56 Gift Hans kone
Poul Olsen 4 Ugift Hendes dattersøn

You all are amazing...I agree with Jane's assessment that "you guys have nailed it." You've confirmed the information I already had--based primarily on undocumented family lore. I'd already done a lot (but not all) of what you've done regarding the American history, but, I had nothing on the time prior to the family's emigration from Denmark. I will a very busy for a long time entering and sourcing all this in my genealogy software. I'm sure I'll have additional questions especially regarding locations, parishes, etc. and on identifying sources.

Thanks again for all your help.

I'm happy for you Bill -- Big Smile!  :D

(And again, we're just overlooking the fact that you didn't share key facts you knew such as their names - taking up much unnecessary time on our part. Hint: be a pal and drop it!)

Expanding on the Maren theory....

We have a 6-year-old unaccounted for on the 1862 ship's manifest:
With Christian and Johanne Peterson
    1. Pet " age 9 = Peder "Charles" Christiansen Poulson
    2. Pet " age 6 = who????

We have a 13-year-old unaccounted for in the 1870 census:
1870 census Leon, Waushara, Wisconsin
James Sornson 36, Mary Sornson 39 [born about 1831 in Denmark]
James 13

Can James be "Pet" - like Peder Christiansen Poulson, he has been assumed to be the child of Christian and Johanne? But really he is Maren's child?

I think that the father of Peter, Christian Poulsen, and the other person mentioned in his birth record, Jens Poulsen, are brothers of Hans Poulsen.  All have Poul Olsen and Caroline Jensdatter as parents and were born in Vollerslev.

Hans Poulsen was born 12 Oct 1834, opslag 18 nr 7.

Christian Poulsen was born 25 Feb 1825, opslag 10 nr 2.

Jens Poulsen was born 29 Feb 1832, opslag 14 nr 3.

Paul, the Christian P--- in Peter Christiansen's birth record was Christian Pedersen, Peter's grandfather, who he lived with until they all emigrated.   And now that you've confirmed there was a Jens Poulsen, that may be the alleged father listed, as Ralph reads, and not Hans.  I have attached a clearer copy of the poorly written record.

I also see that the LDS Vital Records transcriber read father as Jens Paulsen/Poulsen:

Also, in the 1850 census for Poul Olsen, their is listed an Ane Marie Christiansen, age 1, Pleibarn.  She was born in Gørslev, Præstø, opslag 44 hr 8, parents unmarried Mette Nielsdatter and CHRISTIAN POULSEN.

Jane and Paul, I read the note that Bill quotes in his original post as claiming Hans Poulsen and his father [Poul Olsen] were school teachers in Copenhagen, and we've confirmed they did not live or emigrate from there, so apparently a typical family legend that became distorted over the years.

In the Danish censuses, Poul Olsen is listed as a daglier, whatever that is.

I can't read Hans Poulsen's occupation in the 1860 census I posted earlier.

Homer,

I agree with you.  I don't think there were any school teachers in the family.

Paul

Ralph Rasmussen

Interpreting the parish registers leans heavily on a knowledge of vintage Danish.  Even knowing the black letter style handwriting leaves a lot to the imagination without that.  A saving grace is that names and place names are often rendered in italic longhand rather than 'gothic'.  That explains the ability to pick names out of 18th century entries, when the rest is impenetrable.

Dagleier = 'day renter', laborer.

Three helpful pages: http://www.sa/brugearkiver/gotisk/ill/1700store.gif, [same]/1700smaa/gif, and [same]/1600.gif.  The latter showing the variety of older lower case letters.

Hi everyone - came back for a quick peek and see my "teacher" post has a response.
Yes Homer, like Paul, I definitely agree with your interpretation of the note. My post had no link to "our" Paulsens, who were not teachers yet are clearly the right Danes. As I said I probably should not have posted given the sheer randomness of that census record. Guess I was yielding to an impulse of curiosity, wondering whether more distant relations might have been teachers in the area where the family lived.
Paul, thank you for indulging my post by looking into it. Very sweet.
Ralph, yes, I am amazed how you guys are able to interpret the old language and old script style, not to mention poor penmanship and reproductions in some cases.

Peder Christiansen's alleged father Jens Poulsen was not Hans Poulsen's brother Jens born 1832, as Poul Olsen's son Jens died 10 Apr 1835, age 3 (Vollerslev 1814-1837 opslag 132, 1835 #5)

Karen Marie Hansen was not living with her mother and stepfather in 1850 Sædder census, and Peder's birth record lists Jens Poulsen of (or at?) Gjorslev, in Holtug parish, but I don't find him or Karen Marie there in 1850.

The arrival and departure lists show that Karen Marie returned to Sædder 29 Nov 1850, left again 14 Dec 1851 (can't read destination), and returned to Sædder 25 Dec 1852 from Smerup? (opslag 154).

I think Karen Marie went to Terslev (ditto = same as above) in 1851 (opslag 187).
