I am looking for any records regarding my 2nd-great-grandfather's emigration from Denmark to New Zealand in approximately 1870. So far, I have not been successful with my searches.

My 2nd-great-grandfather's details are as follows:

Lars Jeppesen
Born 16 April 1852
Græsted Parish, Holbo, Frederiksborg

The last Danish record I have been able to find him on is the 1860 census:

https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/cid14222430

I believe he may have travelled to New Zealand with his brother, Hans Jeppesen, who was born around 1841, also in Græsted parish.

Many thanks for your help.
Venlig hilsen, Julia

Waking up to all these helpful posts is wonderful!  :D

Citat fra: Gitte Johansen Dato 22 Sep 2022 - 12:02
Nr. 59 og 60, Hans og Lars New Zealand, 1869

Great find, Gitte. Does the date on that record look like 22 May 1869? Do you know where else I could look to find which passenger ship they left Denmark on?

Thanks again, everyone.

Did you check LJ naturalisation for any information

I found something by ancestry, I cannot read it because I am not at member there.

I have a copy of Lars naturalisation documents, but unfortunately they don't give much information other than the country he came from and approximately how many years he had lived in New Zealand before applying for naturalisation. I will keep searching!

Good spotting, Inger ... my eyes must be getting old and tired! So it looks like Lars and Hans left Græsted parish some time between the 22nd and 25th of May, 1869.

The travel to New Zealand was indirectly via London and (later) via Hamburg. There were Danish agents which sold tickets and arranged the travel.

I am attaching two announcements, (in one file). To the left from the paper Dags-Telegraphen (København) March 24th, 1872 and to the right from the paper Morgenposten, København June 9th,1869. Both advertise travel to New Zealand.

Passenger lists are typically made for the place of arrival, so you have to look in New Zealand rather than in Denmark.

Fantastic find — thanks, Aksel. Does the advertisement from the Morgenposten newspaper give any information regarding departure dates?

I have searched through the passenger lists that are available in New Zealand, but have not had any luck finding Lars or Hans on them. Perhaps there isn't a list available for the ship they came on.  :(

Thanks again for the newspaper announcements — I really appreciate you going to the effort of finding them.

Hi Julia,

There was no information about departure dates.

But I did make some research in the matter because I have an ancestor who went to Queensland Australia in 1872.
The ship "Reichstag" made the following travels from Hamburg til Queensland around 1872:
from Hamburg 12th nov 1870 arrival Queensland 4th mar 1871
from Hamburg 17th apr 1872 arrival Queensland 1st aug 1872
from Hamburg 14 apr 1873 arrival Queensland 18th jul 1873
As one can see the travel was up to 3 1/2 months, so with a return travel, the ship could barely make more than one double ravel per year.
