Hello,
I am French and I am looking for information on a legionnaire who died for France on May 27, 1940. Olga Wilhem Brenholdt (no date and place of birth). I think he could be Danish. I find a Holger Christian Vilhelm Brenholdt born in 1912 which could match.
Could you help me find some information? On this document, I don't understand if the family stayed in Denmark or went to Liverpool in England???
Thank you
Eli

The person you found - Holger Vilhelm Kristian Brenholdt *17. July 1912 - is a good match.
Parents: Hovmester Peter Harald Brenholdt and Anna Elisabeth, nee Sengeløv.
(Hovmester= steward/butler on a ship - the person in charge of staff dealing with cooking and cleaning)

Enclosed Censusdata shows that the family left DK and went to Liverpool on board the ship S/S Margrethe

His father died in 1934

1930 Census (5 Nov. 1930), Paa Bjerget 13, Copenhagen:

My reading: Only the father Harald Peter Brenholdt is absent. The other family members are present.

- Holger Christian Vilhelm is an apprentice at A/S Laus Knudsen.

The confirmation of his younger brother Ejnar Harald 12 Apr. 1931:

His mother and two youngest brothers in the 1940 Census, Vilhelm Birkedals Vej 1, Copenhagen:

Thank you so much. Elder brother Einar married in 1938. His sister Birthe also married in 1939.
Holger may be in the Foreign Legion because he doesn't seem to be in Denmark anymore.

I have other Danish legionaries. I will look for information on https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/
Thank you because I did not know this site. It is difficult for me to search in the Nordic countries !!

Unfortunately, the military conscription rolls are not much help:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/billedviser?epid=16504374#51374,11396884 - 973

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/billedviser?epid=16481033#18829,1221719 - 973

He should be in a later roll from 1940/1941, but they are not online.

In France, men were doing their military service at 20. For Holger I looked in 1932, obviously finding nothing.
In his file "mort pour la France" (archive de Caen), there may be the name of his parents or the address of the family. I'll know then if it's the same man

In Denmark the conscription age was 18, but the military service was done later.
