A quick question on Danish county (Amt) names.  The Danish system of counties has been revised a few times 1662-1793, 1793-1970, 1970-2007.  Most of my danish ancestors in my database lived in the 1793-1970 system, but a few before and some straddled the changes.  I believe that I should record the geographic name that was in use when an event (like birth, marriage or death) occurred.  Thus a person may have been born in the Roskilde Amt but died in what had become the Københavns Amt.  Any opinions?

Thanks for any input,
Art Berggreen

On this side in danish, you can find the administrative boarders from 1660 untill today:
https://digdag.dk/

If choose a valid date for e.g. "Amt", the the diferent Amter (counties) will be shown.

hi Art,

I suppose there're several solutions for this, but for myself I don't even use the counties. Instead, I use the parish followed by country as this will be easy to identify as the parish often is unique. In cases, where there're two parishes with the same name I'll add the shire. For this I use the homepage here to look up the parish name to see, if there're more than one parish with a specific name:
https://sub.dis-danmark.dk/kirkeimg/New/list_sogn.asp?Sogn=A

The page can be found like this:
slaegt.dk | Kilder | Driftede hjemmesider | Kirkebilleder | Sogne

A few examples
Vellev sogn, Denmark
Ørum sogn, Djurs Nørre herred, Denmark

Have a nice day.
