The entry for the occupation reads: "gaaer paa Dagarbeide"?  (? with day laborer)

Yes, he is a day labourer (working 'day-by-day')

Literal translation: "Goes to daywork".

Day laborer is "Dagarbejder" - note the extra r on the end :-) (And yes, i and j are the same in this context)
