Randy

Hi  there  my name is Randy Petersen. I'm trying to find any information on my grandfather Anton Petersen. I don't believe that Petersen is his birth name. He was born July 17, 1904 in Haderslev, Sonderjylland, Denmark. His mothers name was Anna Margaretha Callesen (born Oct. 15 1882) and she married Assmus(Rasmus) Jessen Petersen (born May 4 1877) in Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Deutschland on July 7 1906. He then immigrated to Canada with his Stepfather Assmus in April 1921. Thx for any info

hi Randy,

I can see that it's your first post, so welcome to the forum:) I searched for Anton in the years around 1904 in the two parishes Gammel Haderslev and Haderslev Vor Frue in Haderslev county, but I didn't find him. I've also looked in the database with a lot of digitalised records at ancestry.se, but he didn't show up there either. Are you certain about his first name, place of birth and date? And have you looked in one of the records for your father or mother (don't know on which side your grandfather is), if there's any information to find there?

Searching google.dk with "Anna Margaretha Callesen" returns a few results, where one of them might lead to more information. Use inverted commas in the search on google to specify that it's only this unique name you're looking for. One of the results is a thread on this forum from 2018 started by Julie Cardiff:
https://forum.slaegt.dk/index.php?topic=135732.0

She also mentions Anton, so you can email her and ask, if she has more information about his birth. You can email her directly from the forum, when you're logged in. Just click the letter icon below Julie's name and type in your message.

Have a nice weekend and a happy Easter.

Kind regards,

Lennarth

hi Bente and Inger,

the information you've found might lead to the finding of Anton, but as I see it none of the records you've found hold any information about Anton. And it was Anton Randy was looking for. Seems to be a bit tricky to find Anton as he doesn't seem to appear in the church records mentioned (Haderslev, 17. July 1904). Maybe you can give it another shot in the attempt to find Anton's birth record? The Danish census for 1921 won't help as the census was done in October and Anton went to Canada in April 1921.

Greetings from Lennarth

The 1921 Census was taken 1 Feb. 1921:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=84563#84563,13813058

The family had moved from Flensburg to Haderslev in 1920:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=84563#84563,13813059

- but maybe Anton stayed in Flensburg? I guess it's possible that he was born in Flensburg, as were the two younger children.

hi Inger,

yes, you're right about the month in the census. I was mistaken by the column, where it says Bopæl den 1. Oktober, but it was 1918 and not 1921, so Anton probably stayed in Flensburg as you suggest. Was it a guess that you looked for his confirmation in Tønder or did you manage to find him elsewhere in a database?

Kind regards,

Lennarth

It was thanks to the info in the marriage record of his mother 1906:

2) maid Anna Margaretha
Callesen
personally known
evangelian religion, born 15. th
october in the year onethousand and eighthundred
eigthytwo (15.10.1882) in Heezfeld (Bylderup parish), department
Tondern, living in Flensburg
daughter of labourer Anton Callesen and
his wife Maren nee Chris-
tiansen, living in
Kraulundfeld, Tingleff parish, Tondern department

witnesses:
3) labourer Anton Callesen, personally known, 56 years (or 58) old living in Kraulundfeld
4) labourer Christian Jessen Petersen, personally know, living in Flensburg, .... strasse Nr. 54

Based on this info, I decided to search for Anton's confirmation in Tinglev parish.

It's possible that he was brought up by his maternal grandparents and stayed in Tinglev until 1921, or maybe he moved elsewhere after 1919?

hi again,

I searched the census for Tinglev 1921, but I didn't find Anton there, so yes, he must have moved between 1919 and 1921. On the other hand there were quite a few people named Callesen, so this last name seems to be quite common in that area.

hi Inger,

yes, it was a bit of a jump from Tinglev to Thurø. It was some really good findings you made there. I also intended to inform about Anton's (from 1904) mother's father's (Anton from 1848) death in 1919, which could be the reason why he moved around that time. I noticed the information on geni.com. It's good that Anton's (from 1904) place of birth is now specified.
