I have a number of street addresses for my ancestor Hans Krough Clausen in Adelgade Nysted. I would like to look at an old map circa 1850 with the street numbers as they would be on the census so i can understand where the houses are now. I have Adelgade 59/60; Adelgade 28 ; Adelgade 53 Nordre deel; and also Wanthorpe Bye, en gaard og Molle. I'm guessing Adelgade 59/60 now equals Adelgade 11 - the current address of the bibliotek? I would really appreciate it if you you suggest how I might find these references? Thank you

But looking at the original census https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=114440#114440,17276794 and forward
the numbers seem to be consecutive numbers 1-157, and not numbers in the separate streets.

I forgot a word! - So he was NOT baptized with the surname Krog, but took it from his late mother.

I found this

Information about 59+60

Its very difficult to read the text, mayby someone else can help

It looks like Hans Clausen is buying no 59, 9th of april 1814, and no 60 26th of february 18?? (perhaps 1819, im not sure)

On this map you can find no 59 and no 60:

https://hkpn.gst.dk/mapviewer.aspx?type=o1k_oekort&id=3112&elav=2003051

The streetnumbers today is No 60: "Fiskergade 20, 4880 Nysted, Denmark"  and No 59: "Fiskergade 22, 4880 Nysted, Denmark"

Enter the adresses in google maps, and you can use google streetview to have a closer look at the buildings

According to the Danish BBR registry Fiskergade 22 is built i 1830, so mayby its your anchestor Hans Clausen that built the house.

Fiskergade 20 is even older, its from 1761.

But that does not fit with this:

Unfortunately, I have to correct myself. the addresses I provide in the previous post are not correct.

Matr numbers 59 and 60 are old numbers which must be changed to 136 and 137.

Find no 136 and no 137 on this map: https://hkpn.gst.dk/mapviewer.aspx?type=o1k_oekort&id=3112&elav=2003051

The present addresses are therefore:

Adelgade 8, 4880 Nysted and
Adelgade 10, 4880 Nysted.

Ole Westermann

Which also fits with the map from 1798

Biblioteket (the library) i Nysted (Clausens Pakhus (warehouse))
- a part of a big merchant's house having been run for centuries and lying near the (northern) entrance to Nysted.

Hi Ole and Henrik thank you so much for your kind response. I will have a good look at your links on the weekend. The bibliotek was originally Hans Clausen grandfathers granary. It's current address is Adelgade 11 so it is a guess that the several census records of Adelgade 59/60 are the same. I had a wonderful trip there earlier this year. If it's ok I might have a couple of other questions once I've had a chance to digest. Thank you was again, I can't tell you how grateful I am!  :) :)

Henrik Sørensen

You are welcome. Just ask if you have any questions.

I found the probate record regarding Hans Clausen.

Unfortunately i cant read the text. I copy the links in here, mayby someone else can read the text and extract the interesseting information.

Thank you once again for taking the time to look into this for me. I have had a chance now to look at all of your great links and have a few questions I hope it's ok to ask?
- re the links to a hkpn maps of Nysted and Vantore. I've not been able to download a clear version so I can read the numbers? Is there a trick? Or attach a higher res .jpg? I'm hoping this might give me some clues to the other addresses-eg Adelgade 28-29 (in 1860) and Adelgade Nordre deel 53 (In 1845) which still are a mystery. I had wondered whether Adelgade 28 in 1860 is the same as present day
- Can I ask is the value you describe of 'rd' - is that Danish Kroner? (Ie DKK)

Ole Westermann

If you go to ex. https://hkpn.gst.dk/mapviewer.aspx?type=o1k_oekort&id=3112&elav=2003051
- go to Kopi - scroll to JPG (Hele kortet) - (the whole map) - and the map is downloaded.

Do the same with https://hkpn.gst.dk/mapviewer.aspx?type=o2k_oekort&id=22544&elav=0471254

rd is an abbreviation of Rigsdaler - the actual currency at that time.
That was changed in 1875 to Kroner.
I think that a worker in 1860 earned 2-300 rd a year.

See also (in Danish) http://helec.dk/Rigsdaler.pdf - maybe use a translation program.
