Hello everyone,

My great great grandfather, and the patriarch of my Danish-American family (he migrated in 1909) Lars Peter Jensen was born out of wedlock to an Ole Jensen and his mother, Johanne Marie Kathrine Larsen, in 1884 in the village of Tranholm, Horsens sogn, Aalborg. While we as a family know a lot about Lars and his mother (well, a lot is an exaggeration), I am trying to find out what happened to Ole, as he seems to completely disappear from all records between 1880 and 1890. Here's what I know so far:

1. His parents are Jens Christian Simonsen (18 Dec 1821 - 24 Nov 1893 in Tranholm) and Anne Jensdatter (13 Oct 1832 in Dronninglund - 10 Nov 1887 in Tranholm). I believe that they may have been landowners and owned a farm there, but I do not know enough about Danish society at the time to know exactly what the situation was.

2. He had an older brother, also named Ole Jensen, that only lived to be 3 years old (born in 1853 and died in 1856).

3. He was born on 5 Feb 1858 and baptized on the 13th. Record was found here, line number 2: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=164443#164443,27618763

4. He was confirmed in 1872 in Horsens sogn, line number 9: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=164444#164444,27619049

5. He has several siblings:
     a. Ane Kirstine Jensen (b. 21 Dec 1861 in Tranholm)
     b. Maren Jensen (b. 1866 in Tranholm)
     c. Jens Jensen (b. 1869 in Tranholm)
     d. Jens Christian Jensen (b. 1873 in Tranholm)

6. He appears in every census from 1860 to 1880:
     1860: https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/cid9041293
     1870: https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/cid9228952
     1880: https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/cid10170487

7. His son, Lars Peter Jensen, is born in 1884 in Tranholm. He can be found here, line number 3: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=164445#164445,27619157. If I understand the record correctly, it states that Ole and the mother were not married, but that he was aware that he was the father of the child. The mother, Johanne Marie Kathrine Larsen, was working as a servant in someone's household at the time. I believe that is what the annotation on Lars' birth record says, and also jives with what the family already knows. I would not know how to find out exactly where she was at that time however.

8. Ole Jensen only appears in one other place that I can find: in military levying rolls. The first is here: (1876 Ø Omskrevet 1887) https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=16481029#19809,1606184. The second place he appears is here: (1876 Ø Tilgangsrulle) https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=16481029&fbclid=IwAR1b7G96vlu0AHHv1qHLr1fzOc8ml0sIQaoO3cYy9hFQFI8D8fDN2Y4PTbk#187132,31757124. I am not sure how to make sense of these. I believe he was removed from the rolls in 1890, which implies to me that he was at least alive until then. The record in the Tilgangsrulle however puzzles me, and I don't know if it is useful or not.

At this point I've hit a dead end. If anyone has any ideas about where to look, I'm all ears. Thank you very much!

Ole is "udlagt barnefader", so Lars Peter Jensen is illegitimate.

Lægdsruller:
Tilgangsrulle 1876. Lægd 439.
Ø5: Ole Jensen.
Father: gaardmand Jens Christian Simonsen.
Born: Horsens Sogn, Kjær [Kær] Herred. 5/2 1858.

NB: M1 = Millitær-arbejder ved Søværnet. [Military worker in the Navy]

Sadly their is no mention of him moving (or dying)?

So he is transferred to the navy, but sadly I can't seem to find any "sørulle" archives from "5. udskrivningskreds" or one covering Ålborg Amt?
"Kær Herredsfoged" have a list of passes, but only covers 1852-1861.

It seems he was transferred to the sea roll (sørulle)?

Unfortunately, only very few are online: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/en/other/other-collection/179

It's not the right Ole Jensen:

https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/churchbook/sogn2927/churchlisting144573/opslag16241497 - No 49

- born in Horsens, Skanderborg county, it seems.

Darn. Are there other navy records that I could look at? If I read correctly he was taken off the roll in 1890 which sounds to me like he was still around somewhere, where I don't know. I suppose it's also possible he emigrated...

Birth and baptism of Lars Peter Jensen is easier to read in the new scan:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=21584038#356313,70427089 - No 3

His mother is unmarried Johanne Marie Kathrine Larsen, staying with her father, tenant (Indsidder) Lars Peter Pedersen, Horsens [village of Horsens].
The alleged father of the child is bachelor Ole Jensen, Tranholm, who acknowledges the paternity.

Remarks: 10 months prior to giving birth, the mother was working as a servant in Tranholm.

Ole's father Jens Chr. Simonsen was a farm owner, who employed 3-5 servants (Tjenestefolk, -tyende).

I was trying to look up the probate records for 1887 and 1893 from Kær Herredsfoged, but they are not online:

I guess now is a good time to start planning a trip to Copenhagen...

I've done a very broad search of the 1890 census and can't find anyone that looks remotely like him. Is it possible he actually served in the navy and went somewhere?

I guess now is a good time to start planning a trip to Copenhagen...

I've done a very broad search of the 1890 census and can't find anyone that looks remotely like him. Is it possible he actually served in the navy and went somewhere?

The removal from the "searoll" in 1890 is to my knowledge pretty automatic based on age -> I don't think it proves they necessarily knew about his whereabouts or whether he was dead or alive. [I could be wrong though]
Quite a few Danes used the opportunity in being in the navy (or in the merchant fleet) to "jump ship" and emigrate -> could be US, Canada, South Africa, Australia or New Zealand?
The problem is then when jumping ship they sometimes used false names and/or age....

Getting to see the searoll archives might be your best bet to figure out more.

Matthew Dent

That makes a lot of sense to me. Given that he got a poor servant girl pregnant, I'm getting a gut feeling that he went off somewhere. His parents' farm seems to have gone to his sister, so it's really the only explanation. I really appreciate all the help! He's quite the enigma.

Another possibility is the skifte (probate) after his father Jens Christian Simonsen.
As he dies in 1893 it might give information on the whereabouts of Ole (or if he is dead) for that year.

It should be the Skifteprotokol for Kær Herred.

Unfortunately the probates from 1862-1898 not online yet; hopefully soon.

Hello,

I realize that it has been quite some time since this topic has been visited. At the time I was tracking Ole Jensen and there was discussion that had been moved to the søruller in 1883 and that's where my search went cold. At the time, none of those documents had been digitized. It appears now that they are available on FamilySearch: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/3491657?availability=Family%20History%20Library

I have no idea where to start and how to find him. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.

I figured out that he was in "Omskrivningsrullen for 1876, (which was written in 1887), Ålborg Købstad.
Ole Jensen.
Here it says M1 already in 1882.
Afsked i 1890 [Discharged]
Kilde (s. 117): https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/billedviser?bsid=19809#19809,1606184

It gets complicated with the M1 code [I had overlooked this following fact the last time].
Until 1876 M1 was the code for military workers in the navy.
After 1876 it was the code for "Trænsoldater og hestepassere" [drivers of carriages and horse grooms, later also motor vehicles].
Source (page 11): http://www.roskildeslaegt.dk/noter/Foredrag_om_laegdsruller_&_soeruller_2019-compressed.pdf

So as his lægdsrulle is from 1876 and he is written for M1 [in 1882/1883] he actually is not with the navy, but with the army!

So apparently he is in Ålborg until his discharge in 1890 [so unknown whether he will be in Ålborg at the census of 1890] and at least he is in Ålborg in 1887 [Omskrivningsrullen].

Inger Toudal

Omskrevet rulle 1876 / 1887 is for Horsens parish, Aalborg county (lægd 439):

https://arkivalielister.dis-danmark.dk/ao_lgd_nr_vis_form.php?sogn=V%C3%A6lg+sogn&lgd_nr=439&type=u

The discharge 1890 is probably based on age. As I see it, the military rolls don't necessarily reveal anything about his whereabouts after 1883.

In September 1883 Ole Jensen, along with his father and siblings, were summoned to court as heirs of Poul Olesen in Hæbbelstrup, Hallund parish:

Couldn't find anything on Ole Jensen, Tranholm, in Mediestream after that date.

Thank you Niels. That explains why I was unable to find him there. I'm a bit bummed that after waiting all that time for those images to go online I still have no clues. It at least seems like he didn't leave Horsens sogn but I don't understand why I can't find him in the census anywhere... I'll keep working on that.

Inger thank you, that is very interesting. I can confirm that the Ole that you found in that article is him. I double checked my tree and Poul Olesen was Jens Christian Simonsen's half-brother from another father. What exactly is going on in this paragraph, if I may ask? Is it the equivalent of being called to a lawyer to have a will read? Why are so many people being called to the court? Would it be possible to translate this somehow?

I will look more into Poul Olesen. I only have his basic information, I wasn't particularly interested in him at first.

Inger thank you, that is very interesting. I can confirm that the Ole that you found in that article is him. I double checked my tree and Poul Olesen was
Jens Christian Simonsen's half-brother from another father. What exactly is going on in this paragraph, if I may ask? Is it the equivalent of being called
to a lawyer to have a will read? Why are so many people being called to the court? Would it be possible to translate this somehow?

Poul Olesen had made a will in Dec. 1882, which had been submitted to the probate court of Dronninglund District in June 1883.
Niels Peter Eriksen and Axel Peter Jørgensen must confirm the genuineness of the will.

The other persons mentioned are legal heirs/intestate successors of Poul Olesen, and guardians (Curator/Værge) of heirs.

It seems that Poul Olesen didn't have any biological or adopted children.

Sorry that it took me so long to get back. Thank you very much for the information. It seems the court records are not online yet, so for now I'm at another dead end but I really appreciate everything :)
