Hi there,

My ancestors were approved to leave Denmark by the Commissioner of the Copenhagen Police on the 19th April, 1872. So, I would guess, they departed Denmark around 20th - 23rd April. They were due to catch a steamer ship in Liverpool, UK on the 25th, April, 1872, to take them to New York, USA (which they arrived on the 7th May, 1872).

I am unsure how they traveled to Liverpool as I can not find their names in the Hamburg, Germany passenger list database. My ancestors names are:

Johannes Prebensen (born April 9th, 1825)
Ane Marie Prebensen (nee Sorensdatter - born February 2nd, 1935)

Karen Prebensen (born April 26th, 1861)
Jens Peder Prebensen (born February 26th, 1864)
Juliane Prebensen (born January 15th, 1867)
Christine Frederikke Vilhelmine Caroline Prebensen (born May 29th, 1871).

It is possible the surname of Prebensen was incorrectly spelt? Or maybe they left Denmark from a different port? Maybe Copenhagen?

Any help and assistance regarding my enquiry would be terrific  :).

Kindest regards,

Ashley Prebensen

This is the family leaving from Copenhagen. They probably went to an English port first, like Hull, from where they went by train to Liverpool or to a German port.

Before Ellis Island arrival people used Castle Garden but a lot of files are gone missing somehow.

So I would think, that the Prebensen family on April 19, 1872 got their tickets approved by the police in the morning and then
went onboard the steamship "Milo" - which later same day left Copenhagen to go to Hull. From Hull they went by train to Liverpool.

Thank you for all that information  :) it was an enormous help.
