Hello,

I've encountered a particularly difficult pair of parent names and would appreciate help from any script experts. The names appear in several difficult-to-read baptismal entries. I put the AO volume and page reference numbers next to the names of the children below:

The father's name seems to read Peder {MICHELSEN} HAARPØTTE or HAARPATT. The mother's name appears to read Ane AMSTRUP.

The names appear in the following entries:

1. Peder PEDERSEN, Baptism: 27 Sep 1753; Møborg-Nees 1703-1776, Opslag 16
2. Lauritz PEDERSEN, Baptism: 8 Jul 1756; Møborg-Nees 1703-1776, Opslag 17
3. Jens PEDERSEN, Baptism: 27 Apr 1758; Møborg 1703-1776, Opslag 19
4. Ane PEDERSDATTER, Baptism: 9 Dec 1759; Møborg-Nees 1703-1776, Opslag 20
5. Jørgen PEDERSEN, Baptism: 2 Jun 1760; Møborg-Nees 1703-1776, Opslag 20
6. Rasmusine Marie PEDERSDATTER, Baptism: Abt. 07 May 1764; Møborg-Nees 1703-1776, Opslag 22
7. Christen PEDERSEN, Baptism: 20 Oct 1765 ; Møborg-Nees 1703-1776, Opslag 22

If my memory serves me correctly, the father's name also appears in a few confirmation entries and as a godparent for other children around the same time.

Thank you for any help!
Rick Larsen

Hello Rick!

In the 1760's in Nees Sogn, there was a man called Peder Christensen Harpøth who where married with Ane from Ulfborg Sogn.

Peder was a poor farmer but he became the owner of a big farm "Ulfsund", he kept the name "Harpøth", which also was the name of his first farm.

I am not sure if its Peder you are interestet in? ???

Bedst Regards
Kirsten

Rick Larsen

Dear Kirsten,

This must be the man. The coincidence would other wise be very strange. Thank you for sharing the information with me. I will investigate tomorrow in the parish registers.

Best Regards,
Rick

Thank you Arne! It was a big surprise to find so much information from you!

But, after careful analysis, it seems Christensen Harpøth may not be the father.

The big question for me now is whether his son Jens Pedersen Harpyth the same person as Jens Pedersen Veihuus? Jens Pedersen Harpyth was born in 1758 in Møborg. He is the only Jens Pedersen that I can find born in the 1758-1770 period.

According to the 1801 census, Jens Pedersen was 35 years old (born about 1765) and a "...Huusmand med lidt Jord og Væver..."

Ringkøbing, Skodborg, Møborg, Veihuus, , , 16, FT-1801
Name: Age: Marital status: Occupation in household: Occupation: Birth place:
Jens Pedersen 35  Gift Mand Huusmand med lidt Jord og Væver
Anne Cathrine Simonsdatter 26  Gift Hans Kone
Peder Jensen 7  Ugift Deres Søn
Anne Kirstine Jensdatter 4  Ugift Deres Datter
Simon Jensen 2  Ugift Deres Søn

According to the 1834 census, Jens Pedersen was 69 years old (born about 1764) and a "Dagleier".

Ringkøbing, Skodborg, Møborg, , , Øster Veihuus, 63, FT-1834
Name: Age: Marital status: Occupation in household: Occupation: Birth place:
Jens Pedersen 69  Gift  Dagleier
Ane Kathrine Simonsdatter 59  Gift  hans Kone
Kyndi Jensen 13  Ugift  deres Søn
Christen Pedersen 6  Ugift  Pleiesøn
Ane Andersdatter 87  Enke  Almisselem

An analysis of the baptisms of Jens Pedersen Veihuus' children seems to reveal that he is not the same person, because none of the godparents listed are from the children of Christensen Harpøth. In fact, It seems that Jens may have had brothers in the Møborg-Nees area called Christen, Niels, Thomas and maybe Jens Christian.

Do you agree that Jens Pedersen Veihuus and Jens Pedersen Harpyth are different people based on this information?

Any ideas how I might find the baptism of Jens Pedersen Veihuus in this case? There were several Peders having children in Nees during this period. Unless I missed something, I did not see and baptism records for Møborg before about 1775.

Regards,
Rick

Hello,

Just to add one piece of information that adds to the confusion. In the 1787 census of Møborg, I find a Jens Pedersen, who is a "Skræder" (Tailor) residing with a "Væver", the occupation he gave in the 1801 census. In this census, his approximate birth year is 1758-59, the same a Jens Pedersen Harpyth.

Ringkøbing, Skodborg, Møborg, Torp Bye, , , 12. Familie, FT-1787
Name: Age: Marital status: Occupation in household: Occupation: Birth place:
Mourits Christensen 65  Gift  Boelsmand og Væver

Johanne Jøesdatter 15  Ugift
Jens Pedersen 28  Ugift  Skræder

Hello Kirsten,

Thank you so much for sharing the information! I have almost everything except Jens Pedersen's birth/baptism...and, as a result, his parents and ancestors.

For those who are members on Ancestry.com, the records for the family (descendants and ancestors) are at: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/22115091/person/1186962023

If anyone would prefer that I make a synthesis here, please just let me know.

Best Regards,
Rick

As always...thank you very much Arne!!!

I updated my records with all of the changes you suggested.

Some time back, I came across a long thread in the old DIS-Danmark forum about Jens Vejhuus and his wife Anne Cathrine Simonsdatter, which I am posting here for future readers: http://www.dis-danmark.dk/forum/read.php?1,521227,521277

As concerns Jens Vejhuus, I think I need help now from someone who has access to the Lægdsruller, as this is probably the only remaining way to find when and where he was born, and who his father was.

CitatThe Child are named after Jens Pedersens Father, and the Godmother (Anne Kirstine Pedersdatter) is problably Jens Pedersens sister?

BTW, from what I can see:

Child 1 is named after Jens' father
Child 2 is named after the Godmother (Anne Cathrine Simonsdatter's mother was "Anne")
Child 3 is named after Anne Cathrine's father
The only other girl that was born to the couple was called "Karen"

Best Regards,
Rick

Hello,

In studying the parish register and 1801 census for Møborg and comparing them to the godparents' names in the baptisms, I see that several of the people in Jens Pedersen Vejhuus' life seem to be at, or closely related to, a place called Torp.

After 1810, Jens Christian Pedersen Torp and his wife were godparents to two of Jens' children. Peder Torp's daughter (Anne Sophie Pedersdatter?) is also a godparent to his 3rd child born in 1799.

In 1801, I find him
Ringkøbing, Skodborg, Møborg, Torp Bye, , , 18, FT-1801
Name:   Age:   Marital status:   Occupation in household:   Occupation:   Birth place:
Peder Andersen   59   Gift   Huusbonde   Bonde og Gaardbeboer
Ide Margrete Jensdatter   53   Gift   Hans Kone
Anne Sophie Pedersdatter   16   Ugift   Deres Datter
Jens Christian Pedersen   12   Ugift   Deres Søn
Peder Jensen   3   Ugift   Pleiebarn

Some of Jens' children are named after people with names that are not so common in Møborg at that moment. Jens named 2 of his children "Godske". In Møborg-Nees 1801-1815, Opslags 84-90, I see in 1802 the death of Godske Torps hustru Else Olufsdatter; Godske Christensen Torp is the only "Godske" in Vejhuus in the 1801 period. He dies 1809 aged 65 years.

In 1787, there was a Thomas Pedersen living in Hyldal bye in Møborg, seemingly unattached to any parents at age 14 (born about 1773). Thomas Pedersen i Greebs shows up as a godparent to one of Jens' children in 1813. Jens named 2 of his children "Thomas". Niels Greebs also shows up as a godparent to a couple of Jens' children. Niels Greebs' wife dies in Greebs in 1807. In 1801, I find them at:

Ringkøbing, Skodborg, Møborg, Greebs, , , 20, FT-1801
Name:   Age:   Marital status:   Occupation in household:   Occupation:   Birth place:
Niels Pedersen   59    Gift   Huusbonde   Bonde og Gaardbeboer
Anne Christensdatter   39    Gift   Hans Kone
Jens Jensen   16    Ugift   Tienestedreng

Christen Aaeberg shows up as a godfather to several of Jens' children. He is, in fact, Christen Pedersen Aaebierg. We find him in the 1801 census at:

Ringkøbing, Skodborg, Møborg, Aaebierg, , , 21, FT-1801
Name:   Age:   Marital status:   Occupation in household:   Occupation:   Birth place:
Christen Pedersen   59    Gift   Huusbonde   Bonde og Gaardbeboer, samt Lægdsmand og Sognefoged
Kirsten Madsdatter   36    Gift   Hans Kone
Peder Christensen   19    Ugift   Hans Søn
Karin Christensdatter   16    Ugift   Hans Datter
Niels Christensen   12    Ugift   Hans Søn
Maren Christensdatter   5    Ugift   Deres Datter
Anne Christensdatter   4    Ugift   Deres Datter
Christen Christensen   3    Ugift   Deres Søn
Jens Christian Christensen   2    Ugift   Deres Søn
Dorothea Jensdatter   12    Ugift   Pleiedatter

If this picture is accurate, that would seem to compose the following family:

Peder Andersen, father, born about 1741
Ide Margrete Jensdatter, born about 1747 (second wife?)
Anne Kierstine Pedersdatter, b. 1761
Jens Pedersen Vejhuus, b. 1765-66
Thomas Pedersen, b. 1773
Anne Sophie Pedersdatter, b. 1784
Jens Christian Pedersen Torp, b. 1788

And, maybe it is a coincidence, but several of the other godparents also have the family name "Pedersen", like Jens: Christen Pedersen Aaebierg (b. about 1741) and Niels Pedersen Greebs (b. about 1741).

I need some other stronger evidence to link them though, don't you agree?

Regards,
Rick
