I am researching 'Søren Nørgaard Jensen' who as a child (b. 1868) was registered for emigration and left Denmark with his Family in 1869. In 1870 in the U.S. the Jensen family had changed their surname to 'Toft' and Søren was called 'John Toft'. He left the U.S. in 1891 for the UK where he lived for about 9 years. According to the ship manifest he used his birth name 'Soren Jensen' when he left the U.S.
Were the Danes who were leaving Denmark given identity papers or something similar to a passport when they registered for emigration?
Could it be that John (Soren) had some sort of identity paper from Denmark and used his birth name in 1891?

It is at least conceivable. I have a copy of a similar paper from Norway for a family departing in in 1859.
Prior to his departure his parents should at least each have had a Skudsmaalsbog giving birth date, confirmation, marriage, and work history. City folk and those of a certain social status weren't required to use a skudsmaalsbog.
