HI everyone, We are researching Bruces family tree. His great grandfather's name was Niels Simonsen and great great grandparents names were Niels Simonsen and Bertha Katrina Lauritsen. His great grandmothers name was Ida Elise Hansen and her parents were Hans Hansen and Anna Joanna Frederickson. Ida Elise was born around 1880 and Niels about 1870?? in Denmark so we are told. They both immigrated to Queensland Australia, Ida on the ship Ortona in 1900. We would really love to be able to find out their stories and their family history. If anyone can help us we would be really grateful. Thank you for any help
According to the Ortona passenger lists, Ida Elise Hansen was 16 years old in 1900. This appears to be her in the 1890 census records.

Hi,
Thank you all so very much for your help, we really appreciate it very much. We have another question and that is where would we look to find shipping records? we would like to find out what ship the young Niels came out to Australia on and also is there a website for births deaths and marriages that we would be able to access or do we need to go through ancestry?
Once again thank you so much
Bruce and Linda
Hi Bruce and Linda
If the Niels in the 1880 census is the right person – it is very likely, that he 'hitch a ride' on a ship, working as crew.
In the census you can see that his father, Niels Simonsen, is 'skipper' (captain) and at that time (1880) he is away on 'Koffardifart til Persien' (Merchant navy sailing to Persia).
And Marstal – where he was born – is a sailing city (see city here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marstal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marstal).
Persons, who joined the crew on a ship, and migrated working their way, is hard to find in the migrationslist.

Hi Bruce and Linda
To give you something to start on, I will just paste, what I found in the censuses about Ida Elise Hansen and her family.
John gave you the census for 1880 (from http://www.ddd.dda.dk/dddform_uk.asp (http://www.ddd.dda.dk/dddform_uk.asp)):
Hjørring, Vennebjerg, Sankt Hans, St. Hans. Bagterp Hede., Hus, 22(14), FT-1890, C4525
Name: Age: Marital status: Position in household: Occupation: Birth place:
Hans Kristoffer Hansen 43 Gift Husfader Landpost Hjørring
Ane Johanne Frederiksen 39 Gift Husmoder St. Olai Sogn Hjørring Amt
Louise Boline Hansen 11 Ugift Barn Skallerup Sogn Hjørring Amt
Mikkael Frederik Hansen 8 Ugift Barn St. Olai Sogn Hjørring Amt
Ida Elise Hansen 5 Ugift Barn St. Hans Sogn Hjørring Amt
Hansine Johanne Hansen 3 Ugift Barn St. Hans Sogn Hjørring Amt
Ottilie Sofie Hansen 1 Ugift Barn St. Hans Sogn Hjørring Amt
In this we can see, that Ida's father was a 'Landpost' (postman in the countryside), and that he was born in Hjørring on 1847.
We can find his baptism in the churchrecord for Hjørring Parish 1839-1850 (new edition) on page 32.
He is born on June 11th 1846 and christened Hans Christopher Hansen.
And we can find the family in the census:
Hjørring, Vennebjerg, Hjørring Købstad, Hjørring Kiøbstad, Østergade, 211, FT-1850, C0070
Navn: Alder: Civilstand: Stilling i husstanden: Erhverv: Fødested:
Michael Hansen 36 Gift Pottemager, Huusfader Hjøring
Sofie Louise Nielsen 33 Gift hans Kone Hjøring
Nicoline Frederikke Hansen 13 Ugift deres Børn Hjøring
Grethe Hansen 10 Ugift deres Børn Hjøring
Ida Christine Hansen 5 Ugift deres Børn Hjøring
Hans Christoffer Hansen 4 Ugift deres Børn Hjøring
Asmine?? Christine Hansen 2 Ugift deres Børn Hjøring
Hans Christoffer's father, Michael Hansen, was a potter, born approx. 1814 in Hjørring (the city).
His mother was born approx. 1817 also in Hjørring.
Teoretical they the marriage could be before the birth of the oldest child (Nicoline) – but at her birth record (Hjørring Parish 1814-1838 (new edition) on page 91) it is stated, that the parents are not married.
Nicoline is born on March 13th and christed Nicoline Frederikken Michaelsdatter. Her parents are listed as unmarried Sophie Lovise Nielsdatter Gudum, and alerged father of the child Michael Andreas Hansen with (working for) Potter Østrup. They don't get married before 1844 (you can find the information on familysearch - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FKQW-M8W (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FKQW-M8W)). So they have most likely been poor.
Michael Andreas Hansen's baptism can be found in churchrecord for Hjørring Parish 1804-1814 (new edition) on page 19. He is born on May 22nd 1813. His parents are Hans Andersen and Frederikke Henrichsdatter.
Sofie Louise Nielsen's baptism can be found in churchrecord for Hjørring Parish 1814-1838 (new edition) on page 56. She was born on Sep. 17th 1817. She is christened as Sofie Louise Nielsdatter, and her parents were Tjenestekarl (servant) Niels Axelsen Guddum and Magrethe Catrine Eilersdatter.
Her parents can be found in the census for 1834:
Hjørring, Vennebjerg, Hjørring Købstad, Hjøring, Fiskebakken, 28 F1, FT-1834, C5684
Navn: Alder: Civilstand: Stilling i husstanden: Erhverv:
Niels Axelsen Gudom 53 Gift, Arbeidsmand
Margrethe Cathrine Eilersdatter 50 Gift, hans Kone
Asmus Nielsen 15 Ugift deres Børn
Trine Nielsen 11 Ugift deres Børn
And in the census for 1855:
Hjørring, Vennebjerg, Hjørring Købstad, Fiskerbakken, 181-182, Forhuus, 329, FT-1855, D7014
Navn: Alder: Civilstand: Stilling i husstanden: Erhverv: Fødested:
Niels Axelsen Gudum 74 Gift Faar fattigbidrag. forhen arbeidsmand, Gudum Sogn, Aalborg Amt
Grethe Eilers 75 Gift Hans kone. søger erhverv som salgskone, Lybeck
Trine Nielsdatter 32 Ugift Lever af haandarbeide. ledigt tyende, Hjørring
Grethe Kirstine Jørgensen 4 Ugift Datters barn, Hjørring
The census for 1855 also states the place of birth. We can therefor se, that Niels Axelsen Gudum is actually born in Gudum Parish in Aalborg county, and Magrethe Catrine Eilersdatter is born in Lübeck, which today is in Germany but which at that time was Danish.
In the census for 1787 we can find Niels and his mother (his father is dead):
Aalborg, Fleskum, Gudum, Gudum Bye, , 26, FT-1787, B3716
Name: Age: Marital status: Position in household:
Kiersten Nielsdatter 40 Enke Konen Huusbeboer
Niels Axelsen 6 Ugift Hendes Søn

Ellen
And something on Niels Simonsen's family:
From Mette's entry you can see, that Niels Simonsen was born 12/1 1870, and his parents were Niels Simonsen and Birthe Cathrine Lauritsen.
From the census we can see, that his father was a skipper (captain).
His father, Niels Simonsen, was born in Marstal on 2/4 1843, and his parents were Niels Simonsen (*1812) and Karen Jacobsen (*1805).
The family is here in the 1840 census:
Svendborg, Ærø, Marstal Landsogn, Marstal Sogn Bondebyen, ?, 17, FT-1840, C8195
Navn: Alder: Civilstand: Stilling i husstanden: Erhverv:
Niels Simonsen 28 Gift Bysmed
Karen Jacobsen 35 Gift Hans kone
Jacob Christian Simonsen 3 Ugift Deres barn
Hans Nielssen Simonsen 1 Ugift Deres barn
Sofie Elisabet Simonsen 6 Ugift Deres barn
Christen Poulsen 45 Ugift Smedesvend
Jacob Jacobsen 16 Ugift Smedelærling
Mette Sofie Jacobsen 15 Ugift Tjenestepige
Jacob Jacobsen Liflænder 73 Gift Smed Aftægtsmand
Lisbet Albertsen 53 Gift Hans kone
Niels Simonsen profession is the city blacksmith.
It look like he might has taken over the job from his father-in-law, Jacob Jacobsen Liflænder, who is listed as the second last as blacksmith on pension.
This is confirmed by their Marriage record (Marstal 1833-1839 (New version) p. 134.
Marriage date June 1st 1834.
Niels Simonsen, smedesvend, 23 år fra Vester Hæsinge I Fyn nu i landsbyen hos Jacob Smed.
Karen Jacobsen, 26 år, Jacob Smed's datter fra Landsbyen.
[Niels Simonsen, blacksmith, 23 years, from Vester Hæsinge on Fyn, now in the village at Jacob Blacksmith and Karen Jacobsen, 26 years, the daughter of Jacob Blacksmith in the village].
This is most likely Niels' parents and sister at Vester Hæsinge:
Svendborg, Sallinge, Vester Hæsinge, Vesterhæsinge Bye, et huus, 65, FT-1834, B6383
Navn: Alder: Civilstand: Stilling i husstanden: Erhverv:
Simon Nielsen 64 Gift huusmand og dagleier
