HI

I have found some of the names of birth places of ancestors beginning with the word "Of".

What does it mean when I do find something like...  Of Albaek, Hjorring, Denmark?

Is it different than just.....Albaek, Hjorring Denmark?

Thanks

Hi,

Please give a reference to one such example.

My thought is that what you are refering to, is the use of "af" the english equivalent being "of"
here in the meaning "being from" or "from"

Example: af Albaek = from Albaek

In Family Search I think of 'of' as meaning more or less, somewhere near.  In translated records it should, however, reflect the word af in the original.

Here is just one example I found:

Maren Rasmussen
birth: about 1728    Of Fjelsted, Mariager, Randers
Death:  2 Mar 1808    Mariager, Randers

I was just wondering why the "Of" in some places.

Thank You

The usual untranslated word in the record is "af" somewhere. The mexact meaning of this word is rather fuzzy in my experience. It can mean your birthplace but more commonly the place where you currently reside, or even the place you resided before coming to where you now are (if you now live, where the record is produced).

For example, it appears in my grandfatheres marriage record with the meaning where he used to live while growing up - in that instance it was neither his birthplace nor his residence at the time.

Hi Stuart,

I believe in the example you give

Maren Rasmussen
birth: about 1728    Of Fjelsted, Mariager, Randers
Death:  2 Mar 1808    Mariager, Randers

that the person who submitted the information had found the death record from 1808 and that Maren Rasmussen, who probably were listed in the original record as Maren Rasmusdatter, was about 80 years old when she died. From that they could figure that she was born about 1728. When they use the term "of Fjeldsted" that indicated that she was living in Fjeldsted when she died. People are in no way saying thay know that she was born there, only that it is a location where they knew she was at one time during their life.
