Jens Nielsen died 1699 in Gudum Sogn. He was identified as Jens Nielsen "Borgemester" on his children's birth records from Gudum Kirke from about 1689 to 1697. I visited the Archives in Aalborg and they determined that he was not a mayor in Aalborg and Gudum was too small to have had a mayor. There was a Jens Nielsen reported to be a supervisor on the Gudumlund Estate in the 1600's according to the Gudumlund records. Is it possible that he was given the title "Borgemester" on the estate for another position other than 'mayor?'
He was probably the local 'sognefoged'/'bondefoged' (parish executive officer), and the local people just called him
'borgemester' (a title only for the 'head' of a city; bigger cities could have several /many).
You can only guess for the reason why they called him so. They probably had their reasons.

Borg also means castle. So he could be the steward of the castle/estate
