Titel: What happened to Gerda Andrea Jorgensen, b. 30 Aug 1896?
Indlæg af: Richard Juhl Dato 26 Nov 2010 - 07:26
Gerda Andrea Jorgensen was born 30 Aug 1896 in Copenhagen.  The details of her birth are:

Skt. Andreas, Sokkelund, København, 1896-1901, opslag 234 no 136:
Gerda Andrea Jørgensen, born 30. aug 1896 Nansensgade 41A.3floor, bapt. 4. oct 1896.
Parents. Jens Peter Jørgensen, shoemaker, wife Rasmine, b. Hansen.
Witnesses. Driver Jørgen Jørgensen, L(ille) Istedgade 5.3floor, carpenter Hans Peter Larsen, Jakob Dannefærdsvej 5.1floor.
Remark. F(ather) b. 10 Dec 1866 Næstved (Naestelso parish). Married 26 Dec 1895 St. Johannes Church.  M(other) b. 10 May 1867 Snode Svendborg

She was the 1st (and I think only) child of Jens Peter Jorgensen and wife Rasmine Hansen.  Jens was the twin brother of my gr-grandfather, Niels Peter Jorgensen, who emigrated to the U.S. May 1888.

Gerda would have had a unique upbringing because both of her parents were deaf.  Both parents were "placed" at the Royal School For The Deaf (Det Kongelige Dovstummeinstituts) in Copenhagen at a very young age, as early as age 4, and were separated from their families.  Naturally, I have always been curious about Gerda.  1) Did she survive?, 2) was she herself deaf?, 3) did she marry and have children and grandchildren?  If she has descendants, I would love to make contact with them, but that's a pursuit for another day.  Unfortunately, I can't find anything after her birth, but then I don't really know where to look.

Her father (Jens Peter Jorgensen) was trained as a shoemaker and, I believe, lived in Copenhagen all his adult life.  He died 17 Mar 1949.  Rasmine Hansen (her mother) died 9 Jul 1940.  Both were interred at Bispebjerg Cemetery/Krematerium in Copenhagen.

By the way, this forum  (actually the old DIS-Forum-Find Your Relatives, etc.) helped me find her father's history.  It was assumed that he had died because he didn't appear in any of the churchbooks or censuses in Naestelso, his home parish, because, of course, he had been placed in the deaf-home in Copenhagen.  The last entry for that search was on 15 Mar 2009 under the heading, "What Happened To Jens Peter Jorgensen", should anyone want to look at that.

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Richard Juhl

Hi Anni,

Thanks.  That's fantastic.  It's encouraging to see that Gerda was apparently doing well at age 20, working as a typist.

Regards,
Richard

Thanks, Martin, every little bit of information is helpful.

As suggested by a friend (TW Olsson)), I have been searching the marriage and death records (thinking she might have died in the flu epidemic of 1918, 1919) in Filip parish but have found nothing.

Hello Stina,

I am amazed that you found this information.  I was at a dead-end.  Thank you so much.  So Gerda did marry, but briefly, her husband (Albert Johan Hansen) dying about 5 months after their marriage in 1918.  He was only 29 years-old when he died.  It makes me wonder if he might have had the "spanish flu" which killed so many young people, 1918-1919.....hard to know.  For now, I will assume that Gerda had no descendants.  Again, I very much appreciate all your hard work.

Regards,
