In the 1911 Census for my great granduncle, Lars Mikkelsen and his family are located at: Hellerup, Sokkelund, Købnhavn

the surname for the family is given as "Mikkelsen". This is for the entire family, father, mother, and all children.

The surname for father and mother remains: "Mikkelsen"; however, for the children it is "Mejlbo".
Out of curiosity, does anyone have a reasoning for the name change for the children?
Is this a place?, occupation? street? family friend? Why the change?

Interesting that only the surname of the children changed.
After 1904, when a new law concerning surnames was approved in Denmark, people were encouraged
to change surnames ending in -sen to more individual surnames.
To me, Mejlbo sounds like a place name.

I have located the birth entries for all of the children and there is a note in the remarks section regarding a name change or there is in the Barnet name column the Mikkelsen name crossed out and or bracketed followed by the name Mejlbo.
Interesting, would like to know why the selection of the name Mejlbo.
A possibility is that an ancestor came from an area with "Mejl" occurring as a place name.
Lars Mikkelsen was born in Thisted and his father Anders Christian Mikkelsen was from Hoxer, Østerild Sogn, Hillerslev Herred, Thisted Amt; as was his grandfather Mikkel Christensen. His father Christian Jensen was "gaardboer" in Hoxer in Census 1801.
North of Østerild Sogn is Hjardemål Sogn.
In Hjardemål Sogn there is a location called "Mejl Klit"!
So a person from "Mejl Klit" could be called a "Mejlbo"!? [Middelbo(e) is also a name that occurs in Denmark]
The etymology is "Mejl" is Jutland dialect version of standard modern Danish "Middel", older danish "medel" (English Middle).
Lot of place names in Jutland with mejl-.
Another possibility: If Christian Jensen's gård was in the middle of Hoxer, then he could be called a "mejlbo" among the locals?
