Hi, may I please have help with this section of a letter written in 1925. I am not sure what 'flået' means, or what happens to the Bønderne these days if they are violent? Hopefully I have managed to attach the file. Thank you.
Hej Michelle.
vanker ( klø )= en form for straf

flaaet = hevet. Han var elevernes skræk; han var ikke bange for at hive i ørerne eller i nakkehårene.
mvh Verner
An example ;D
Ja, det understøtter da min forklaring :)
Det bedste jeg kunne finde Verner ;)
Jeg tror ikke det findes bedre. Det bliver Michelle glad for.
Thanks Verner and Gitte. From the translations I saw, it seemed much more violent than that! From photos I can see the victim still has his ears many years later, so he survived okay. :)
To flå something means to flay - kind of.
When it comes to having one's ears flået (flayed), the direct translation means to have the ears ripped off. However, that's not what the sentence means; it's more like a saying. It's a punishment to pull a wicked boy by one of his ears, and to the boy it might feel like the ear is being ripped off, but it's not really ripped off. Hope it makes sense.
Gitte Johansen's image is spot on.
