Titel: Trying to find military record
Indlæg af: James Dahl Dato 12 Mar 2018 - 23:44
I am trying to find a record of my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather August, or alternatively Augustavus as written here, who was a rytter in "Neuberg's Regiment" in around 1750.

Here is the record listing his regiment:

I can't read the name of the Colonel under who's Company he was in (written in the German style here as Obrist) is it Pfuhl or Pfahl?  Let's say Obrist Pfuhl's Company in Neuberg's Regiment.  Now this is completely irregular for the naming convention of regiments later in Danish history, what regiment is this?  Fynske Rytterregiment?  Holstenske?  Who is Neuberg and Pfuhl?

I think this might be Pfuhl:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17202077#198835,37674481

Christian Pfuhl, Colonel in Neuberg's regiment, but what is Neuberg's regiment?  The above seems to indicate the Holstenske Rytterregiment but the records don't list a Holstenske Rytterregiment in 1750.

Why would every record of August exclude his surname?  Not even a patronymic?  Where would I look for any record of his military service?  If possible I want to find out where he is from originally.

Update:  I think I've found what I need to research, but it's only on microfilm
https://www.sa.dk/daisy/arkivskabers_arkivserier?a=&b=&c=neuberg&d=1&e=2016&f=&g=&h=&ngid=1240460&ngnid=&heid=2211558&henid=2211561&epid=&faid=&meid=&m2rid=&side=&sort=&dir=&gsc=&int=&ep=&es=&ed=

So I think I'm stuck.  I have no idea how I would search microfilm in Denmark from Canada.

The records are probably filmed by the Mormom Church, with the Danish National Archives getting a copy. You might be lucky to get to see the films at you local Family History Center.

Hi James

You wrote

but I read his name in this record as Augustavus Treves?

Btw I think it is better with a link than just a picture, because it will give you the opportunity to compare letters from other records in the book. Also please let us have the source.

Regards

Ole

It says Treues or faithful/true, the record is in German rather than Danish because it's the Duchy of Slesvig where the administrative language was Low German.  I thought it said Treves too initially but I read it again and it says Treues.

I always interpreted it as shorthand and not his surname, never really considered that it might actually be his name.

James, this record is in Danish and I am quite sure Treves or maybe Treues is his name. Where is it from?

I'll post all the references to him that I know it's him.

Here is my direct ancestor, Christian Albrecht August's baptism, born 20 March 1757:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17126884#170068,28550895

My ancestor was the youngest son.  His older brother Johan was born in 8 Nov 1753, baptism:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17126884#170068,28550890

Here is his older brother Friderich Christian Albret born 14 May 1751, baptism:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17126884#170068,28550886

These were all after he had moved to Sønder Stenderup in Vejle Amt.  Prior to that he lived in Odense.

The records from Odense contain more information than the ones in Sønder Stenderup, which don't say very much.

His older brother Jørgen Peter was born in Odense in 4 Feb 1746 and the record in the original post is his birth record, and it contains much more information.  I can't find it it's in one of the Odense registers but there are a bunch of them, SA.DK has changed how the church books are organized.

My ancestor had two other older brothers, Hans Peter and Rasmus, but I haven't found their birth records.

The Odensedatabasen has Augustavus as Treve http://www.odensedatabasen.dk/kilde/begivenhed?fornavn=&efternavn=treve (http://www.odensedatabasen.dk/kilde/begivenhed?fornavn=&efternavn=treve). I have never heard that name before, but Treves is the French name for the German city Trier, so maybe Augustavus was a mercenary from Trier and you should look for him there?

I can't read the full text in Christian Albrecht birth record and have asked for help at
https://www.slaegtogdata.dk/forum/index.php/topic,137041.0.html (https://www.slaegtogdata.dk/forum/index.php/topic,137041.0.html)

And as you will see there, it says the father was August Pelsmager, where Pelsmager is an old Danish word for furrier.

Dear Ole,

I believe you are correct that Augustavus or August was a foreigner and probably a mercenary, but this makes him incredibly difficult to trace.  He never married Else Magrethe and she was in fact married to someone else and appears to have run off with August.

At some point he retired from the army and decided to become a glove maker in South Stenderup where later records call him August Handschumacher.  Some others refer to him as August David.  He was apparently still alive when Else Magrethe died but there is no record of him dying in Denmark.

I found something!

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17138151#180571,30639055

They DID get married, Else Magrethe was widowed.

His name is Treuesen?  What kind of name is that? o_O

Apparently Treue IS a Danish forename, albeit an EXTREMELY rare one

Excellent  :)

I have never heard the name Treu or Treuesen before. The priest might have guessed. Maybe someone else have an idea?
