Hello, I am looking for Jens Pedersen, who had two children with Sarah (Sally) Fawcett in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada, 1936-1938. Things went bad and Jens returned to Denmark and sent a divorce decree to my grandmother.
My mother would like to know more about him and her heritage, but she was young when he left and doesn't remember much. He did have a brother Peter, who, with his wife Edith, had two daughters, and they lived in various places in Ontario, Canada.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Carmela
Jens Pedersen is probably the most common name in Denmark - so I don't think we can do much from Danish site yet.
Any information in Canadian censuses - birthplace, date of birth - any immigration papers ?
If he lived in Denmark after 1968 he should be in the National Personal Register. But it demands at least birthdate and -place.
Oh boy, that's what I thought. I was hoping the details would help out though. I have searched on Ancestry to no avail. But I'll just keep at it. Thanks for responding anyway.
Carmela
Hi Carmela
Maybe You could try to look after the marriage certificat - and immigration in state where lived ?
Do You have the divorse decree - it could tell where he lived in Denmark
Hi Carmela
Do you have the exact birthdate of your grandfather? Or at least the year of birth?
Or any further information on his brother Peter?
Was both he and his wife Edith born in Denmark?
/Ellen
Hi Ellen, these are all good questions but unfortunately I have no answers. I only know what I already shared. I would assume that he was older than my grandmother, although my mother isn't sure about that. I know that Peter lived in Toronto Ontario for years, as he is on voter lists, and last is seen in Markdale Ontario in 1972, I believe. I do know that my grandmothers family moved to Ontario from Saskatchewan probably in 1935.

Hi Carmela
I've found this record on ancestry:
Military record – Drafted 5th June 1918, Manitoba
Jens Pedersen
Adress: Moose Harn P.O, Manitoba, Canada
Birth: 17. sep. 1893, Horsens, Denmark
Next of Kin:
Peter Pedersen (brother)
Alida P.O., Sask., Canada
Is it possible that Sally's family came from Alida?
Regards
Ellen
Hi Carmela
What year was your grandmother born in?
And who is her parents?
/Ellen
Hi Ellen,
My grandmother's line I have traced quite a ways back. She was born in 1914 in Michigan, but her family moved to Saskatchewan in 1916. They moved to Ontario in the early to mid 1930s, and her first child was born in 1936. It is some time in those early to mid 1930s that she met, married (possibly) and had two children with Jens. My mother remembers her ripping up the divorce decree, which was in Danish.
It is possible that they met in Manitoba, but I have no way of knowing. Nothing relating to the man any longer exists with my family. I did see that record on Ancestry, and bookmarked it as it is promising, but if it were him, he would have been much older than my grandma. My mother does not know of any military service either.
Thank you for your help!

Really? Nobody with ties to a deceased Jens Pedersen who went to Canada in the 1900s and returned very disgruntled and angry? Obtained a divorce and sent a copy to Sarah in Ontario? No stories or photos of his son and daughter?
Left behind his brother Peter who was married to Edith with 2 daughters and lived in Ontario as late as the 1970s?
Nothing rings a bell with anyone? It would be old family myth by now I would think. The sad story of Jens in Ontario Canada......
Hi Camela,
and happy new year first of all...
If we are to crack this one, you need to provide us with some more info! Do you have informations from the Canadian archives on the marriage and birth records on the two children from 1936 - 1938 ? Often there will be vital information on e.g exact name, birth date, or place of origin.... and typically mnore informations than written on any certificate.
With a common name like Jens Pedersen we should preferably know which town he comes from. Once we have this, it will be a 10 minute job to trace him. Things should all be available online in digital form, free of charge, available for everyone....
best regards
Bjørn
Happy New Year Mr. Marcher,
and thank you for responding to me. Actually to everyone who has responded, I am very grateful. I have recently requested a search from the Ontario archives for marriage info. It is difficult with no family info. I'll post back if I get anything helpful.
Thanks again,
Carmela

Thank you to everyone! I have now filled out my family tree, and my mother was overwhelmed by all the information.
Here's a photo of Jens Johan Pedersen at the age of 14: https://arkiv.dk/vis/3874021
It was taken in connection with his confirmation 3 Oct. 1920:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17125376#167003,28041399 - No 8
Jens Johan Pedersen's son of 2nd marriage Aksel Marinus Pedersen, born 1 Nov. 1954, christened 26 Dec. 1954:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17125376#167005,28041778 - No 3
Photo of Peter Pedersen (b. 1909) 30 Sep. 1923: https://arkiv.dk/vis/3874323
Maybe you can find more relatives here: https://arkiv.dk/soeg?searchstring=nordby+sams%C3%B8
School: https://arkiv.dk/soeg?searchstring=%22nordby+skole%22+sams%C3%B8
Confirmation: https://arkiv.dk/soeg?searchstring=nordby+sams%C3%B8+konfirmation
Jens Johan's father Jakob Andreas Pedersen, b. 1880, is supposedly on this photo: https://arkiv.dk/vis/3894411
- if it's him, the year is wrong. He wouldn't have been attending school in 1884.
Best regards,
Inger
Thank you, Inger, the photos were amazing. I am truly grateful for everyone's help.
Carmela
I've decided to post again - I hope this is possible:
I have been looking through the arkiv.dk site, at photos from Nordby Samso. I have been wondering if anyone has access to photos of my newly found family members, or perhaps at least school photos or obituaries of their deaths: Jens Johan Pedersen and his son Aksel Marius Pedersen. There is a photo of Jens' confirmation, but not of Aksel's. I am guessing his would have been in about 1968. Jens died in 1983 and Aksel died in 1998, unfortunately. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Carmela
I think it would be a good idea to contact the local archives, Samsø Egnsarkiv: http://www.samsøegnsarkiv.dk/ (http://www.xn--samsegnsarkiv-enb.dk/)
I'm sure they have more photos than those published on arkiv.dk, and they have local newspapers etc.
The opening hours are Thursdays 13:00 - 17:00, but you could send them an e-mail: http://www.samsøegnsarkiv.dk/contact-us (http://www.xn--samsegnsarkiv-enb.dk/contact-us)

Just to update,
I contacted the samso archive on the seventh, and they at first responded that they would look for photos, but they have not gotten back to me since. Do you know the names of newspapers that I may contact directly, in order to search at least for obituaries of Jens and his son Aksel?
Thank you,
Carmela
According to http://www.kefotos.dk/cliche_tng/getperson.php?personID=I012306&tree=tree1
obituaries for Jens Johan Pedersen were published in Kalundborg Folkeblad 5 Apr. 1954, and Holbæk Amts Venstreblad 5. Apr. 1954.
These newspapers don't exist anymore. Both have been incorporated into Nordvestnyt: https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordvestnyt
Best regards,
Inger
Thank you, Inger. I noticed that Samsoeroots now has my mother listed, so that's interesting.
I read the write-up on Jens that seems to be an obituary, and according to google translates, 'tre sonner' means 'three sons'. Can anyone confirm that Jens had two other sons? This is not something I had even thought of - that there may have been other children. This would mean there are potentially cousins!!! Meanwhile I will check again on arkiv.dk for photos of other Pedersens in Nordby.
Thank you Inger, for all your help!
Hello Carmela
Jens had 2 stepsons, that must be why it says "three sons".
Hardy Oskar Hansen 1939-2007: http://www.kefotos.dk/cliche_tng/getperson.php?personID=I010204&tree=tree1
Hardy's confirmation, number 2: http://ao.salldata.dk/osd_vis.php?bsid=167005&side=112
At this time, april 1954, the mother Julie was a housekeeper at farmer Jakob Andreas Pedersen's, Sølyst, Nordby Mark - the father of Jens.
Confirmation of the younger stepson here, number 8 (he might be living so I will not write his name): http://ao.salldata.dk/osd_vis.php?bsid=167006&side=34
Maybe this is him: https://nuwber.dk/person/1954005
Thank you Henrik for clearing that up. Too bad, it would have been interesting if they were related but thats the way it goes. Still, I will add them to my family tree too, for respectfulness.
For anyone interested, I have done dna tests through AncestryDNA (where I have my family tree), and 23andme, as well as FamilyTree DNA.

Hi Inger. Is that website for all of Denmark or just Samsoe?
It's a website for local archives in Denmark: https://arkiv.dk/
Best regards,
Inger
Thank you. I am going to add that to my list of sites for my Denmark research. Love seeing the old photos.
It's a great site, I look through it often, and have noted many possible relatives with it.
Hello all,
It's been a few months, and, while I am sure of the marriage between my grandmother and Jens, I cannot seem to connect with any people who can confirm or elaborate with further info.
I am also wondering - are Danes even allowed to do DNA testing? Because all of my matches are pretty much British/Scottish/
Irish, with a minimum of Scandinavian. I really should be around 25% Scandinavian, but I haven't found the matches to support that. Which is why I'm wondering....
DNA testing is fully legal in Denmark, but not that popular yet, but I am working on it ;)
Most Danes test with FamilyTreeDNA and MyHeritage.
Kind regards
Anders
Thanks for the info Anders, I have now added MyHeritage to the list of DNA companies I've tested at.
Regards,
Carmela
I was looking through arkiv.dk this morning and came across a photo someone uploaded of Aksel Marinus Pedersen. He is my mother's half-brother through their father Jens Johan Pedersen.
Thank you! It is nice to have at least a photo, though to know any of them would have been better, of course.
Once again, thank you very much for all your help in tracing this previously unknown side of my family - and myself, I greatly appreciate everyone's efforts.
Best regards,
Carmela
