Hello,
As is often the case when building our family tree we come across relatives who married relatives. In every case this has not been a problem until now. The wife is Maren Nielsdatter Falster (#1) who was born 3 Jan 1741 in Klakring, Bjerre, Vejle, Denmark, daughter of Niels Jensen Falster and Maren Sorensdatter. I have her as having died before 1744 in Klakring.
I found no death record for Maren #1 and made an assumption that she must have died before 1744 because her father, Niels Jensen Falster, had another daughter with his 2nd wife, Anne Christophersdatter (my 5 times great-grandmother) also named Maren Nielsdatter Falster (#2) born 19 Jan 1744. Maren #2 died age 5 weeks 26 Feb 1744 in Klakring.
It has been my experience that it is relatively uncommon to name living children the exact same name (although in one case children by the 1st wife were named the same as the 2nd wife even though all 4 children were living). More often a child is given the name of the most recently deceased child of the same gender.
But...in working back the family tree of Ole Jensen I come across the following Census records:
Year: FT-1787 Source reference: 106
Cadastre/Address: Klakring Bye
Position in household: Deres Børn
Parish: Klakring District: Bjerre
Shire: Vejle Place name: Klakring Sogn
Source entry No: B9159 Record No.: 328
All members of the household
Name: Age: Married?: Pos. in household: Occupation: BirTD place:
Jens Olesen 54 Gift Mand Huus og Hiulmand
Maren Nielsdatter 48 Gift Kone
Ole Jensen 12 - Deres Børn
Søren Jensen 9 - Deres Børn
Rasmus Jensen 2 - Deres Børn
Mette Olesdatter 55 Ugift Mandens Syster
Year: FT-1801 Source reference: 34
Cadastre/Address: Klakring
Parish: Klakring District: Bjerre
Shire: Vejle Place name: Klakring Sogn
Source entry No: B9165 Record No.: 365
All members of the household
Name: Age: Married?: Pos. in household: Occupation: BirTD place:
Maren Nielsdatter 61 Enke Huusmoder Huusbeboer med Jord
Ole Jensen 27 Ugift Hendes Børn National Soldat
Søren Jensen 24 Ugift Hendes Børn
Rasmus Jensen 16 Ugift Hendes Børn
The census ages seem to correspond with a 1740 birth for Maren.
Using the parish transcripts for Klakring I found the following entry in 1770:
27 april Jens Olesen og Niels Falsters datter Maren trolovede, deres forlovere var Søren Stougård og Ove af Breth i Barrit sogn
16 juni Jens Olesen og Niels Falsters datter Maren copulerede
Is it obvious that I should not have had a death for Maren #1 before 1744? It seems obvious to me but I do not come across children being named the same name as living children too often.
The explanation is in this case, that when Niels Jensen Falster's 1. wife Maren Sørensdatter died, then the first born daughter in his
new marriage should be named after his late wife Maren.
So in that way there suddenly came a Maren senior and a Maren junior in the family.

Ah, that makes sense and I had not even thought about that. Thanks Ole.
