Titel: A century old mystery! Herman William Ludwig KRYGER
Indlæg af: julia malajczuk Dato 24 Feb 2012 - 12:14
I have only just found this forum and think it's wonderful. Thanks to all you helpful people.
My great grandfather came to Australia from Denmark and married in Kyneton Victoria in 1892. Marriage certificate says he came from Randers and was aged 27 years. Parents were Henry Kryger and Ann Elizabeth Dempler, occupation farmers. He was a sailor or worked for a shipping company in Sydney, NSW and returned to Sydney for the next 8 years, only visiting occasionally. His son, also Herman William was born in 1893. My grandmother and her sister were born in 1900 and 1902. I think he had retired by then. Unfortunately he died in 1905. He never spoke of his family in Denmark but always sent 5 pounds to his mother at Xmas! Months after his death my great grandmother found an address for her mother in law and wrote informing her of the sad news. There was not ever any reply from Denmark.
How can I find out where he came from and if he had siblings and perhaps descendants who may know why he distanced himself from his family?
So far I've found nothing in IGI or Familysearch, or ancestry.
To search in AO would Randers be Amt?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Julia.

When he applies for naturalization in 1901 it is said that he is 32 years old so he should be born 1868/1869.

I enclose the wedding entry (Randers, Rougsø, Ørsted Parish 1850-1883 page 34) since I'm not sure of the whole text you might want to ask someone in interpreting texts.

Census 1880 Örsted sogn (landsogn) image 94. There you find the family and above is Henrik's sister Lovise (Louise) who was married to Johan Larsen. Ane Elisabeth was Catholic.
I can't read the name of the place where Henrik/Heinrich was born but his sister was born in Prussia which was the most powerful state of the German states in the 19th century.

In census 1870 you'll find the parents with two boys and a girl. Names and other info somewhat difficult to read. I enclose (Randers, Rougsø, Ørsted, page 33 )

The eldest child Henrik in the 1870 census is son of Ane Elisabeth, probably a child born out of wedlock.

I sent 2 notes last night but for some reason they got lost! We were so excited to have so much information found in such a short time. Very well done Flemming, Irene and Eva! You are all so clever, many thanks. I haven't studied all the details yet but think the link to Osterkryger is probably correct. I really hope there was another brother and a sister, and maybe a grand daughter! How wonderful is that? Can't wait to tell Mum who's 89 now and getting impatient about my lack of progress. The German heritage confirms my instinct also. How easy would it have been to change ones name in that time?
Many thanks again
Regards
Julia

Hi homer, I wish I had the address but it was lost years ago.
I also found HWL on the "Laura" in 1899 [ Melb to Sydney], "Hauroto" in1899 Greece, Fiji, "Kalgoorlie" also 1899 to Fremantle. Then "Wodonga" in 1901. Maybe that's how he paid for the farm?
Regards and thanks

It appears he had only a half-brother and one sister. Of those listed in the 1870 census:

Heinrich Andreas was born out of wedlock 27 August 1860 to Anne Elisabeth Rimpler and Johannes Salgmand(?)

Rosine Frederikke Kristiane Østerkryger was born 12 July 1866.

The child Anne Elisabeth Østerkryger age 1 in 1890 census was born out of wedlock 1 June 1888 to Christiane Frederikke Osterkryger, who I assume was the sister Rosine Frederikke Kristiane.

Hej everyone,

Through the use of the afgangliste and tilgangliste I have found where Ane Elisabeth Rimpler and Heinrich Vilhelm Østerkrüger are from.

In the tilgangliste for Ørsted, 25 Aug 1860, opslag 40 nr 57 it says that Ane Elisabeth Rimpler is from Oldenborg (Oldenburg in Germany).  I can't read all of the old script.  Remember that she is Catholic so if you find her place of birth look in the Catholic church records.

In the tilgangliste for Vejlby, Sønderhall, Randers for 30 Nov 1862, opslag 165 nr 24, it lists where Henrik V. Østerkrüger is from.  I have a hard time making out the script but it looks like Dallegneder ??.

Perhaps someone can take a look at the records and read the correct place names.

Med venlig hilsen
Paul

Some points to consider:  Oldenburg was then both a city and a kingdom of northwest Germany, and mostly Lutheran.

The censuses seem to indicate Anna Elisabeth was from Silesia, eastern Europe, mostly Catholic.

Oldenburg in the tilgangliste would indicate where she came to Ørsted from, but not necessarily her original home.

Ørsted, 25 Aug 1860: Ane Elisabeth has come to Ørsted to work for the dairy tenant (mejeriforp.). The entry only says that she is from Oldenborg - no parish mentioned.
When she arrived in Ørsted, she came from Gl. Estrup, an estate in Fausing, Randers county.

Vejlby, 30 Nov 1862: Henrik came to Vejlby from Dalbyneder, Randers county.

Homer, there are several towns of Oldenburg in Germany. One is in Holstein not far from Lübeck. You are quite right there was also a city state called Oldenburg.

I did not know of one near Lübeck.

Hi
I have been searching for the birthplace of the Osterkrüger family, and now I think I have found it.
I started with the marriage of Heinrich Vilhelm and Ane Elisabeth, but could not figure out the ending of his place of birth.
Then I found Lovise in the 1890 census:
Randers, Rougsø, Ørsted, Hollandsbjerg, , 271, FT-1890, A7509
Johan Karl Larsen   45    gift   Husfader   Gartner   Randers
Lovise Østerkryger   56    gift   Husmoder      Kabel
Karen Marie Larsen   1    ugift   Plejebarn      Kjøbenhavn

Kabel is not to be found in Germany, but Familysearch has this:

CONRAD OSTERKRUGER - International Genealogical Index / GE
Gender: Male Marriage: 01 DEC 1826 Evangelisch, Cappel Blomberg, , Lippe, Germany

Cappel Blomberg, Lippe! Please, search Google  Maps: Cappel Blomberg. North-east of Cappel is a place called Groβenmarpe, and that is the place mentioned at Heinrich Wilhelm's wedding.

And now the translation of the marriage entry:
Bachelour, labourer in Vejlby
Parish Heinrich Vilhelm Oesterkrüger
24 11/12 years old (meaning 24 years and 11 months), born in Grossenmarpe 26 Nvb
1838 and baptized 2 Decb. the same year. He belongs to the Reformed
Church. He shows signs of vaccination
according to Blichert's* attestation of 25 Septbr
1863

The maid Ane Elisabeth Rimpler
34½ years old, born in Kleinitz in Silesia
14 Febr. 1829, she is Catholic,
works at Stenalt.**
According to Blichert's attestation of 26
Septbr. 1863, she has scars after
natural cowpox
*Blichert was the general practitioner of Ørsted.
**Stenalt is an estate in Ørsted parish: http://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stenalt_(%C3%98rsted_Sogn)

Hello everyone,
Amongst everything else I've looked at lately - so much info! - I've found a christening record in family search for soren henrik emil osterkryger, father Vilhelm, mother ann marie Sorensen, birth 19/8/1883. Could this be why he left and changed his name? Would have been only 19. Place Karlebo, Frederiksborg.
