I have not been able to trace my great grandfather back to Denmark. My grandfather found him dead in their barn having hung himself when he was just 13 years old. Because of this my father said my grandfather didn't talk about his father. I have some information, not much but maybe enough for some assistance. His name was Hans Rasmussen. His birth date listed the 1910 US Census was December, 1862. His year of immigration to the United States was 1889 and he came to Minnesota. He was married to Jensine Melstead, the spelling may be off (birth Feb, 1863 - immigration in 1885) most likely also married in Minnesota. Thank you.

Hi Dale :)
I think, you need to find the marrige between Hans Rasmussen and Jensine Melstead. There you will most likely get more information on them both, and hopfully a lillte more to go on to where in Denmark they came from.
Hans was and still is a very commen name and so is the last name Rasmussen.
good luck!
Tanja
Hi Dale,
- and when you have their marriage - this could be useful ??

Do you have his death date and place? His death certificate may list parents, but there are many Hans Rasmussens listed in the Minnesota death index, several with no birth dates.
The family is in Mille Lacs County 1910 census but his widow and children are in St Paul 1920 census.
I have been searching for marriage records for some time without any luck. Those of you that do this on a more regular basis, would you give me tips on where to look? I've used what the Morman church offers. I had assumed it would have been in Minnesota, but maybe is was elsewhere in the US. I also looked at the Danish census for 1870 for all Hans Rasmussen's at age 7 and found 15. Maybe he is one of those. My father said his father told him his dad died when he was 13. That would put the year of death in 1917 or 1918. I've ordered a death certificate from the MN Historical Society for a Hans Rasmussen in Hennepin County, year 1918. Thank you for you help.

hi Dale
Jensine Mølsted as Kirsten found must be Jensine Petrea Jørgensen Mølsted born feb, 18, 1863 in Eriknauer, Hatting parish look up 100 on AO.
She is also confirmed in Hatting Church 1877. The mother Mette Marie Andersen is widow 1880.
Jensine Jørgensen Malsted worked on a farm in Hatting 1880.

Hi Dale
It can not be your Hans Rasmussen. This Hans Rasmussen married 7. nov 1890 in Løsning and he was grandfather for a man here in Horsens. The name Mette Lene said me something, so I looked at the chart I have for that man.
Not many census from 1870 are on DDD but most of 1880 are in. There you will find many Hans Rasmussen.
If the young people had knew each other in DK mostly the man moved over and she came later. Here she came first.

Following Hanne's posting:
Rasmus Pedersen is still in the 1880 census, and if he should have hung himself, when Hans was 13, it doesn't fit with this family:

Lissa
Lissa,
Hans hanged himself when my grandfather (born 11/23/1904) was 13.
Hi all. I strongly agree with Hanne:
"If the young people had knew each other in DK mostly the man moved over and she came later. Here she came first. " Hanne Bjørn, Torsted. Yes, Jensine (Sine Molstad) immigrated before Hans Rasmussen, and it is highly likely they met and married in the USA. Where - we don't know.
This means there is no particular reason Hans Rasmussen would be born in Vejle Amount.
He could be born anywhere in Denmark.
To Lissa, who wrote "Rasmus Pedersen is still in the 1880 census, and if he should have hung himself, when Hans was 13, it doesn't fit with this family."
I don't think it's Hans Rasmussen's father who hung himself when Hans was 13. I think it's Hans Rasmussen who hung himself, and a son found him.
Thus it's George Raymond Rasmussen born in 1905 in Minnesota who found Hans Rasmussen dead (probably in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota) in about 1918.
Is that right Dale?
Okay, Dale, I see you clarified, and when - just as I was posting! :)
Jane,
That is the family. My grandfather is George Raymond Rasmussen.
Ok, I misunderstood, sorry.
Lissa
Okay - and you ordered the death certificate for Hans. Now we can hope it states a specific place of birth for Hans - more than just "Denmark."
At any rate you have been finding the Danish family for your great-grandmother, Hans's wife Jensine - thanks to these resourceful forum writers! So you've gained a lot of knowledge already.
By the way, the Minnesota Death Index has a Florence Rasmussen (sister to George Raymond maybe?) who died in Minnesota with a mother's maiden name of Milstad. Could this be your great-great aunt?
Her death certificate itself would tell us that if you don't know. I ask because we could then check for an obituary for her and/or any other family, in addition to an obituary for Hans, that might tell where he was from.
Jane,
Great find! I searched the death certificates at the MN Historical Society site and they list Florence C. Peter (dob 4-26-1902) who dies 6-13-1987 with the correct mother's maiden name. I then looked at the birth certificates and there is Florence Cecelia Rasmussen (dob 4-26-1902) Meeker County and mother's maiden name Milsted. How do we find the obituary?
Dale
Hi Dale
I do not know about Jensine Mølsted is the right person as your greatgrandmother.
When she vent over, she follow with her mother Mette and brother Marius.
If Jensine is the right person she has some interest anectors here in the area south of Horsens.
regards
Hanne Bjørn
Hi again -
Dale, the Minnesota Historical Society has microfilm of newspapers. There is not a digital copy of most of it - as far as I know - so a person can go to the MnHS building and search newspapers there for obits.
It may be that for a fee the research associates there will search for you. Worth asking. You know the town where Hans and Jensine were living in the 1910 census, and an approximate year of death for Hans - about 1918. That's not a real narrow window of search, though, and could take awhile to find any obit for Hans. Florence would be easier, since you now know her place and date of death. Your grandfather - do you know his date and date of death?
To Hanne, thank you for the reminder that we do not know for sure that Jensine Mølsted is indeed Dale's great-great grandmother.
I find a Maria and a Mary Milsted in Mille Lacs County - need to look more and hope to find a Mette and Marius.
By the way - Dale do you have the death certificate for George Raymond Rasmussen? And it does not list his mother's maiden name? If we haven't checked that out yet, we should. I didn't find a death record for him at MnHS (online).

St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota
Ray Rasmussen 26
Marguerite Rasmussen 24
Lois Rasmussen 2
Sina Rasmussen 67 widowed mother to head of household
Florence Rasmussen 28 sister to head of household
Grace Esbe - lodger
Florence Peter died at age 85 in Hennepin County Minnesota June 1987 - as you say Dale - her social security death record states that her soc. sec. # was issued in North Dakota.
U.S. Veterans Gravesites record says Florence C. Peter born 26 April 1902 died 13 June 1987 was the wife of Harald M. Peter. He was a veteran, a sergeant in the US Army. He is buried in the military cemetery in Minneapolis, Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Section O site 2908. Harald was born 01 January 1900 and died 02 September 1976 in Hennepin County, Minnesota, per MnHS death index.
I searched Ancestry.com for obituaries for any of the family - didn't find. Maybe another forum member will have better luck.
For obituaries, you can also try the last (statewide) volunteer listed here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obitl/volmn.html
That's good to learn Homer. :D
Here is a little more information that might help in finding obituaries:
Hans Rasmussen b. December 1862 in Denmark died 28 September 1918 in Hennepin County, so an obit for him might be in the Minneapolis or St. Paul newspapers. And his wife and children are in St. Paul in 1920 census.
In 1905 Minnesota census he is called Hans S. Rasmussen, butter maker
Florence Cecelia Rasmussen is born 26 April 1902 in MEEKER County with mother maiden name Milsted, and George Raymond Rasmussen was born 28 November 1904 in MEEKER County, mother maiden name Melstead. So they are not in Mille Lacs County at this time. They move to Danielson, Meeker County, Minnesota about 1901, and they are in Bogus Brook, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota by 1910 census.
1905 Minnesota State Census
1905 Danielson, Meeker County, Minnesota (Rosendale Post Office)
Hans S. Rasmuson 42 born about 1863 in Denmark, butter maker, in USA 16 years, in this registration district 4 years 5 months
Jencine Rasmuson 42, born about 1863 in Denmark, in USA 19 years, in this registration district 4 years 5 months
Mary E age 8 born about 1897 in Minnesota
Annie L age 6 born about 1899 in Minnesota
Florence S age 3 born about 1902 in Minnesota
George R, six months old, born late 1904 in Minnesota
And here is some searching in Denmark:
I found two Hans Rasmussens born in December 1862 by using Family Search - I know Dale you looked for Hans Rasmussen born about 1862, so maybe you have these already:

Hans Søren Rasmussen born 30 December 1862 in Kirke Helsinge parish, his parents were young/unmarried girl Ane Hansdatter in Helsinge and alleged father bachelor Rasmus Sørensen from ??? (cannot read it). The churchbook is very difficult to read.
He was bapt. 15 March 1863 - cannot read when he was bapt. at home.

Perhaps not a mill? but a place name?
Lissa
Hi Lissa -
Good find!!!
That could be the right Hans. I hope you'll look for more facts about that Hans (in the emigration record) and about Hans Rasmussen in Minnesota. And that some others in the forum will help.
At least one Hans Rasmussen who is NOT our Hans Rasmussen fits the emigration record you found:
"Hans Rasmussen born about 1863 became naturalized US citizen 20 JUN 1896. Arrival in Philadelphia USA 7 May 1889. Title and location of court where petition for naturalization was filed: Kings County, New York."
Hans Soren from Kirke Helsinge could still be the right guy - I'm just saying the record also seems to fit this other man.
I wish we could connect Hans Rasmussen in Minnesota with some brothers, sisters, or other family in Minnesota and ditto for Jensine (Sine) Molstad. If we could collect more names from their birth families, would help to find a more certain match in earlier years in Denmark.
You all are wonderful! Thank you very much for taking the time to research. I was disappointed today to receive the Sept. 28, 1918 death certificate from the MN Historical Society. This Hans had cancer and kidney disease and appears to have died at Northwestern Hospital. There are just 4 Hans Rasmussen's listed from 1910 to 1920. There is another in Hennepin County who died in 1916.
Hans Soren... The only place I've ever noticed a middle initial is in the 1905 MN Census and it was an "S".
You may have found him Lissa.

Dale, are there no family documents that tell where the family was living ca 1918? There should be a probate, and a gravestone with dates. Also, if they were Lutheran, the local church records of immigrants who died sometimes noted birth date and place when deaths were recorded.
I haven't made any progress on Hans Rasmussen - Have we looked at both of the Hans Rasmussen's born December 1862? Hans Soren in Denmark fits with the 1905 census in Minnesota for Hans S, but that census taker also made his daughter "Florence S" when in fact her name is Florence Cecelia (per a finding posted by Dale).
Going along with Kirsten's post of the possible Jensine Molstad family in Hatting in 1870, I found this -

Mariane Nørring was daugther of a teacher in Stenderup parish therefore she is mentioned in Gejstlige skifter. Hi Homer - well thank you! Amazingly, even now when I use "Densine" to search, with the exact date you've provided, and ship name - I still can't find her on Ancestry!
I see them now on the Thingvalia! Marius is 11 years older than Jensine, so he's born about 1852.
Can the following man be this brother to Jensine Molstad from Hatting? In the churchbook - when does it say Jensine's brother Marius is born? This one is born December 1851.

Hi,
There is a Marius Jørgensen Mølsted born 25 Dec 1851 in Hatting parish, Vejle county - born to Jørgen Christian Jensen Mølsted and Mette Marie Andersdatter, 32 yrs. old. It's opslag No. 7 (1851-1866).
The 1880 census is here:

Marius Jørgensen Malsted 28 Ugift Søn Hatting - he's born 25 December 1851 per Lissa
Christian Jørgensen Malsted 19 Ugift Søn Hatting
So we can be pretty sure that Jensine Mølsted of Eriknauer in Hatting sogn immigrated with her brother Marius Jørgensen Mølsted and Marius went to Minnesota.
We find a birth record with Marius as father - important clue, because here he has the middle initial J.
M. J. Milsted
Minnesota Births and Christenings, 1840-1980
Spouse: Emma Milsted
Baby girl, 12 May 1900 (no name, but must be Myrtle)
Makes it likely that Jensine also came to Minnesota - and can well be the same woman as "Melstead" found as mother on the birth record for George Raymond Rasmussen!
Would really be great to get that death record for Jensine Rasmussen - it might confirm this.
Jørgen Kristian Jensen Mølsted died 27 April 1878, bur. 4 May, Hatting parish, opslag 6 (1874-1892).

Ahhhh....Father to Jensine and Marius Jørgensen Mølstad and husband to Mette Andersdatter.
This is another "fit" between the family in Eriknauer, Hatting, and the family on the Thingvalla - that his wife/their mother would immigrate with her immigrating children.
Mariane Nørring died 25 July 1836, bur. 31 July, Ølsted parish, Vejle county - opslag 213 (1814-1840). She was 64 years old.
She could be here in 1787:
vejle, Hatting, Stenderup, Stenderup Sogn, , Stenderup Bye, 1, FT-1787
Name: Age: Marital status: Occupation in household: Occupation: Birth place:

Wonderful.
So looking upward at the discussion ::), does anyone disagree that mother to George Raymond Rasmussen in Minnesota, USA, must be Jensine in the census below? Do we have enough evidence?

I cannot find Mariane in 1801 .. can anyone else?

That sounds like an interesting family. ; D
I think our evidence is strong!
For additional verification of the connection (between Eriknauer, Hatting sogn in Denmark) and Minnesota (Meeker County, Mille Lacs County, and the city of Saint Paul in Ramsey County) - Dale could seek:
1. Jensine Rasmussen Minnesota death certificate brought up earlier
2. Maurice Milsted death certificate (between 1900 and 1910)
3. Jensine and Hans marriage record (perhaps on microfilm at Minnesota Historical Society, or in the churchbook of a Danish Lutheran Church, possibly in Saint Paul, but since we're not sure of location...)
4. Contact with descendants who might know (this too is a long shot!) the Danish roots of the family
I think Florence Cecelia Rasmussen who married Harald/Henry Peter had a daughter Lois M. who married Milton F. Peper in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Not sure about that. If so, those descendants appear in an online obituary for Lois Margaret Peters Peper.
Here are some Milsted leads in Oregon (certainly and/or likely descendants of Marius/Maurice):

Jens Rasmussen Mølsted lived at the sencus 1845 in Lille dalby, Hedensted parish.
Hans Søren Rasmussen born 1862 in Kirke Helsinge lived 1870 in Drøsselbjerg parish as fosterchild with Mads hansen and his wife op 26 and he was confirmed 1877 see Drøsselbjerg churchbook op 96.
Mads Hansen can be his mother´s brother and maybe his parents never married.

Mariane Nøhring was born 1771 - date ? - in Svostrup parish, Viborg county, opslag 27 (1771-1795). Her father was Jeppe Nøhring, the mother not mentioned. As he was the schoolmaster in Svostrup according to the Nygaards Sedler, I tried that parish.

Jensine's SISTER Bertha Mølsted is going to Saint Paul, Minnesota!
The evidence is mounting.
With Kirsten's discovery we can feel it is highly likely that Jensine Mølsted/Sine Milsted of Saint Paul (and nearby counties) has come there from Eriknauer, Hatting Sogn, in Vejle amount Denmark!
Please, parents - tell your children where you grew up! : D

1900 Census Saint Paul, Minnesota - for Bertha Marie Molstad I think:
Marie Millstead born 1848 in Denmark, 54, widowed, head of household, dressmaker, has had 1 child, still living, immigrated 1883, 17 years in USA
Gena Millstead born 1884 [in Minnesota] [transcribed as Gina]
with lodgers Marie Nelson, Jason Kitch, Matilda Jannes [Matilda b Denmark and gives same date of immigration, 1883]
NEXT DOOR
Marie Millstead born May 1819 [was Mette Marie Andersdatter born May 1819?], age 81, born in Denmark, immigration 1883, has had 10 children, 6 living
Hans Millstead, son, born 1855 in Denmark, Carpenter, widowed, immigration 1883
Philly, son [to Hans] born 1885 in Minnesota, messenger boy
And marriage of Gena (Jorgena I imagine):
30 March 1909 in Saint Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota
Arne Johnson marries Gina Milsted. No parents names given.
This marriage might be key - the marriage record might say the place of the marriage, which would likely be a church - maybe the same church of other family records.

On 02 March 1909 Philip married Agnes Hurley in Saint Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota.
Kirsten, remember you were looking for a repetition of the name Marian, from Denmark to Minnesota? I have now a woman I think is Mariane Noring Jørgensen (age 13 in the 1870 census in Eriknauer, Hatting), living in Minnesota with Mary Milsted ( = Mette Marie Andersdatter, mother to Jensine Petrea Jørgensen Mølsted - and also mother to Marian, Bertha, and Hans).

Kirsten - another one of your leads panned out. You asked "Marius/Maurice's son Rudolph? JACK R. MILSTEAD ...etc."
Found a World War I draft registration card for Jack Rudolph Milsted. He registered 05 June 1917 in Oregon City, Clackamas, Oregon (where his mother Emma Milsted moved after Maurice died). Jack Rudollph Milsted was born 12 September 1894 in Saint Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. His registration card says he's already served in the military - as a corporal in the U.S.M.C. The physical description says Jack was tall, slender, with blue eyes and brown hair.
That's enough. I think Dale has a good start on this to find here!

Before everyone moves on, does anyone have any additional information on Rasmus Sorensen and Ane Hansdatter from Lissa's reply?
Hi Dale -
Will you please send me an email - so I can reply with a summary of what we know about your great-grandfather Hans Rasmussen and who he might be in Denmark? (I can't seem to make the email system work from my end). That way you can put the summary as a new post in which further work can be done, on your great-grandfather's side.
It seems to me that your great-grandmother's identity and ancestry has been established. Lissa posted some links showing that family's (your family's) genealogy (family trees posted online). I took a quick look, and I can tell you it is quite interesting. For one, it seems you are descended from Jacob Jensen Holm, who became bishop in Viborg in 1587. So that's a good day's work for furthering your knowledge of your Danish roots!
I haven't had much time but I am certainly noticing the grouping of Hansen/Hansdatters and Sorensens in the people associated with Hans Soren Rasmussen in Drøsselbjerg By, Drøsselbjerg, Løve, Holbæk. Yes, we should explore further.
Jane,
My e-mail is dalerrasmussen@yahoo.com.
I want to thank you and all who have responded in this string for all of your great work with the research. I could only scratch the surface, but you have really dug into this and provided more than I ever thought would be found. Rasmus Sorensen is a great lead and hopefully is the father of Hans.
Dale
Hi Dale
You asked about Ane Hansdatter and Rasmus Sørensen. What Lissa could not read in the churchbook about Rasmus Sørensen was that he lived same place than the mother so he lived in Kirke Helsinge 1862.
Here are some sencus Ane Hansdatter who had a brother Mads Hansen children of small farmer Hans Madsen and Rasmus Sørensen who was a son of a farmer and later got the farm.

I also wonder why not Rasmus?

Hi Dale - the same name but a different person - it's just that the patronymic last names are so common (my father is a Hans, your father is a Hans, we're both Hans's sons/daughters). Confusing - but good to remember that a person named Rasmussen is not looking for Rasmussen ancestors in Denmark.
I don't speak Danish - but I think husfader means head of the household, father of the household. Hope one of the Danes will say.
We Americans would find it about impossible to research Danish ancestry without their help!
So it's Ane Hansdatter Enke (widow) husfaderns' moder (mother to the head of household) dependent on him.
This Hans (S)Søren Rasmussen of Kirke Helsinge is a foster child in another parish in 1870 at age 7, although the researchers here have now shown that he had a living father and living grandparents in Kirke Helsinge. We don't know why all this is, maybe it is not a sad story, but maybe it is. And maybe a sad life story is behind your great-grandfather's death in about 1918. Maybe.

For a good brief online dictionary, try Norman Madsen's Danish-English dictionary.
When I in july was at a familyreunion in U.S. I found out that Google over there not shows tranlation in the front. You have to choose more and there you have translate. Try to copy some text Ctrl+c and paste it Ctrl+v choose danish and translate to english. I tried to tranlate a speach one of my relatives made at the reunion. I have to change something.
But it can not translate husfaderens maybe because that word it not used any more in DK.

"May 7 1872 dies farmer Søren Rasmussen during a stay in Slagelse - 62 years of age." -- says Churchbook Kirke Helsinge, Holbæk county - opslag 215
says Kirsten, "Søren Rasmussen is the father of Rasmus Sørensen who is the father of Ane's son Hans Søren Rasmussen who married Signe Mølsted."
The churchbook in Kirke Helsinge does not refer to Sine Mølsted, right?
Wondering, since we have not established that this Hans Søren Rasmussen is Sine's husband.
I'm getting confused. Is Signe Molsted Jensine? How do you know Ane Hansen is Ann Hansdatter? This seems extra sad for poor Hans. He is a foster child at uncle Mads in 1870, but his mother is somewhere else having children in 1867 and 1871 and his father is also not keeping him.
Here is the churchbook:
Død 7 maj 1872 -begravet 14 May - Søren Rasmussen Gårdmand i Kirke Helsinge Mark (...........)
Gift med Ane Hansdatter - 62 - har to efterlevende børn, en søn og en datter.
Døde uventet under ophold i Slagelse.
Dale,
I understand you are confused.!
Ane is often spelled Anne, Anna
I can not find the census 1879 that has Hans as a 7 year old boy.?
Signe is often short of Jensine or Jensigne.
Kirsten
Kirsten,
Are Hansdatter and Hansen the same? I was wondering how you found Ane Hansen.
Hanne had this reply for Hans at age 7 in 1870.

Kirsten - 1870 Hans Soren Rasmussen (born December 1862 in Kirke Helsinge) lived in in Drøsselberg, Løve, Holbæk. Census not available on ddd.dda.dk but Hanne has looked at it. Hans was a fosterchild with Mads Hansen and his wife op 26. Hanne suggested Mads Hansen can be his mother's brother and maybe his parents never married. This turned out to be the case!
Dale - yes, as Kirsten says - by Signe Molsted she meant your great-grandmother Jensine.
The process gets confusing but each step is made carefully, to see that one person leads to another, to make sure it's always the same person being talked about.
The Hans Soren Rasmusssen we are investigating (MAYBE your great-grandfather, we don't know) was born to an unmarried couple - Ane Hansen/Hansdatter was his mother. Rasmus Sorensen was his father. The churchbook tells things like who dies, who marries who, who moves away. So by looking at the churchbooks, the researchers are piecing together the story. In the churchbook and census record we see Ane did not die - she married Hans Pedersen and moved and in 1880 she's living in this place:
FT 1880 (FT = census)
Sorø, Slagelse, Kindertofte, Kindertofte Sogn, Frederikslunds Hovedgaard, 1, FT-1880, C7364
Hans Pedersen 40 Gift Husfader, Fyrbøder hos Forpagter Pedersen born in Sæby Sogn, Holbek Amt

Anna Sofie Pedersen 13 Ugift hans Datter born in Gjersløv Sogn, Holbek Amt
Hansine Vilhelmine Pedersen 8 Ugift hans Datter born in St. Mikkels Landsogn, Slagelse, Sorø Amt
Rasmus Sorenson the biological father to Hans Soren Rasmuseen has a father Soren Rasmussen farmer in Kirke Helsinge and mother Ane Hansdatter. This Soren Rasmussen has been visiting in Slagelse, where Ane lives, and he dies, says the churchbook.
Hansdatter/Hansen, it's the same - the change is typical of those we see as Danes - the whole nation of people - changed to permanent surnames from the early to later 1800s. "Daughter of Hans" was no longer used.

Dale, this post of Kirsten's shows items posted earlier. It's good to have it here again, because we need our memories refreshed, to get focused on Hans Sorensen. I prepared a summary for you to post as a new thread, and emailed it to you - fyi
Jane,
I've brought up your e-mail. Is it best to start over with the summary on a new thread or to keep going on this one so everyone can read the details?
I can see why those of you that do research enjoy it. It's like a big treasure hunt where you are looking for clues to piece together to lead you to the treasure at the end.
Dale
I am contacting my aunt Lois in hopes that she may have some information and also addresses for any descendants of Mary, Ann and Florence that I can contact.
Hans and Jensine first born was Marie after her mother, Ann after his?
Hi - I don't know which is better, to start a new thread or keep going here. I am new to the forum. Other opinions?
I just thought it would be good to group together the details about Hans - they are hard to find, scattered amongst the Jensine search.
Yes, it's like a treasure hunt.
I am going to post your summary (thank you Jane) here, but will start new if wanted.
Seeking the Danish roots of Hans Rasmussen, Minnesota dairyman. Born December 1862 somewhere in Denmark, and immigrated 1889 (per 1900 census)
IN DENMARK
Two Hans Rasmussen born December 1862 are found on Family Search.
1, Hans Christian Rasmussen born 16 December 1862, christened 01 March 1863. Parents Ole Rasmussen and Margrethe Hansdr. (Præstø, Mønbo, Elmelunde)
2. The second Hans is more interesting as a starting point because Lissa found an immigration record that "matches" him. He is Hans Soren Rasmussen born 30 December 1862 christene/baptised d 15 March 1863, Kirke-Helsinge, Holbaek, Denmark. According to the churchbook, his parents were alleged bachelor father Rasmus Sørensen from (unreadable place) and young/unmarried girl Ane Hansdatter of Helsinge.
A timeline of what has been found out about him:

Hans Søren Rasmussen born 1862 in Kirke Helsinge
15 March 1863 baptised at Kirke Helsinge parish, Løve, Holbæk. Notice that the Family Search christening date is 30 January 1863, so probably that is the day he was baptised at home (see above).
1870 Lived in in Drøsselberg, Løve, Holbæk. Census not available on ddd.dda.dk but Hanne has looked at it. Hans was a fosterchild with Mads Hansen and his wife op 26. Hanne suggested Mads Hansen can be his mother's brother and maybe his parents never married.

Has anyone found the American immigration record that matches the Danish emigration record for Hans Soren Rasmussen?
Dale - I sent you an email with links for doing research to find descendants.
FYI all - I found another Hans Rasmussen born December 1862 in Denmark - but I'm pretty sure he's not "our" Hans Rasmussen.
Hans Jacob Rasmussen. Born 24 December 1862 in Oster Haesinge, Svendborg, Denmark. Christened 25 January 1863. Parents: Rasmus Pedersen and Johanne Hansdr. Mother's father: Hans Jacobsen. He married 17 October 1884 to Petrine Jokumsum age 24 of Hillerslev, in Aabylund, Østerhæsinge sogn, Øster Hæsinge, Sallinge, Svendborg. In 1880 he's Hans Peder Rasmussen Aabylund. In 1890 census it's a different wife but I think it's the same Hans?:

unreadable place is 'sammesteds' - it means 'same place' -that is Kirke-Helsinge.

Yes, the Danish emigration record - Thanks Kirsten. Show his intention to leave Denmark.
I am asking for the American immigration record - a list showing him going to USA, on a ship.
Last time I couldn't find Jensine Molstad on a ship but Homer found her - and from that you guys found her mother, brother, sister, and sister's daughter also on the ship - and from her sister (Bertha) emigration record we found it said she's going to Saint Paul, Minnesota.
So that was very important.
I've ordered two more death certificates from the MN Historical Society from Olmsted and Nicollet county (1918 and 1916). The remaining one was Hans A. Rasmussen in Hennepin county. My father said he would like to visit the grave site if it can be found.
Ah - well that certainly makes us want to find it.
Dale, your grandfather was 13 when his dad died. Did he not ever mention to your father where the family was living at the time? It is likely a farm in the Bogus Brook, Mille Lacs county area - with Sine moving the children to Saint Paul afterward. But....can he recall? Google maps says Bogus Brook is about 25 miles east (and a little north) from St. Cloud.
My dad doesn't know much at all because his father never spoke of Hans. I'm sure it was a horrible event to find your father dead. His recollection is age 13. He has a picture of Hans, Sine and all the children. When I asked him this past week if my grandfather could have been 11 in the picture (1916 death) he said that he looked older than 11.
Growing up I don't remember meeting or doing anything with the families of my grandfathers sisters. I am going to try to contact them through my aunt Lois. My parents are going to ask her if she has any information on Hans that may help and she may have other family contacts.
My dad is 80 years old, has no use for computers or the internet. It's at his request that I began this search. He would like to know more about Hans and his roots in Denmark (me too) and as I mentioned, visit the grave site if it could be found.
I really appreciate the help I've received from everyone through this forum. I wasn't getting anywhere by myself and you have already found so much valuable and interesting facts on the family.
Thank you.
Hi Dale, Here is contact information for the Mille Lacs County Historical Society. For the moment a working hypothesis can be that your great-grandfather is buried near the farm where the family lived in the 1910 census. Maybe the society can help you pin down where the farm was. It may be that your great-grandfather's death is not registered - the other Hans Rasmussens are not him, per Family Search (see my email). Sorry we didn't catch that earlier. But if we can find the church and cemetery and gravestone, that is really what we want to find for your dad's sake.
You have found so much about your great-grandmother, and I hope this interests and delights your father. Yet with Hans Rasmussen, there seems to be a greater longing to connect, and perhaps because of a sense that the family had little opportunity for closure with his death.
Can you call or write to ask about plat books, Bogus Brooks, Danish Lutheran churches and cemeteries in the area?
If a likely cemetery is located in this way, then the next step is to contact a volunteer on Find-A-Grave. These volunteers will go to a cemetery near themselves and take photos of a grave or sometimes help to locate it.

Is the Hans Soren Rasmussen we are studying on this sinking ship?
http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=danma
Danmark, Thingvalla Line - departed Christiania 13 March 1889
On April 6th 1889 the emigrant ship Danmark was abandoned in the Atlantic. The passengers and a crew were all saved by a small freighter, the S/S "Missouri" of the Atlantic Transport Line. The "Missouri" was not accommodated for more than 20 people. The passengers was brought to the Azores and put ashore. For more information, read: The sinking of the S/S Danmark - (newspaper account concerning the sinking of the S/S DANMARK, has been transcribed and submitted by Kristin Brue. Kristin's great-grandmother was among the passengers rescued from the sinking ship in 1889.)

An H. S. Rasmussen 26 arrived New York from Hamburg 6 May 1889 on the ship Wieland, and he's listed from Slagelse. Maybe Hans S. who registered in March for the ship Denmark missed that voyage.

That is very interesting!! Let's check this out!
Hi,
On Ellis Island I have found Hans Rasmussen, laborer, age 43, and his home was in Minneapolis. He was going back to his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Could someone check this. The date was 22 Feb 1906. However, the manifest says that he was single!
I have realised that he is a wrong guy, since the Danish emigration records state that he was born in Stokkemarke on Lolland.

An exciting find! Jensine's mother died in 1914 in Bogus Brooks, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota - therefore Hans Rasmussen and family must have been in Bogus Brooks in 1914!! Also, the following records show that just about the whole Milsted family of Eriksnauer, Hatting, Hatting, Denmark are found together in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Also shown: Christian (brother to Jensine) came first, in about 1880-1882.

Good news.
I spoke by phone with someone at the Mille Lacs County Historical Society. She has Hans Rasmussen who according to her records died in Wisconsin(?), but the burial site is in Princeton, MN. Hans and Sine owned 80 acres near Princeton. He was born December 30, 1862 and died October 6, 1918. She has more to check on. She's going out to take a picture of the gravestone.
With this birth date I believe the odds that it's Hans Soren have improved dramatically. She is going to help look for a marriage certificate and obituary.
With this news, can those with better access to Danish records trace Rasmus Sorensen and his father Soren Rasmussen back farther? Thank you.
Dale
Dale - Surely you have found him! And he must be Hans Soren Rasmussen that we were studying. Congratulations! What a kindness of the woman in Mille Lacs County - I hope you post a photo of the gravestone. I wonder why his death is registered in Wisconsin - that part does not fit with your family story, but...
Dale - you seem more interested in your male lines of descent? Should we just concentrate on that?
To recap -
Hans Søren Rasmussen born 30 December 1862 christened 30 January 1863, Kirke-Helsinge parish, Løve herred, Holbæk amount, Denmark. Parents (alleged bachelor) Rasmus Sorensen and (unmarried girl) Ane Hansdr.
Ane Hansdr = Ane Hansdatter = Ane Hansen.
Ane Hansen is born about 1836. Parents Hans Madsen (b about 1801 in Kirke Helsinge) and Margrethe Hansdatter (b. about 1797 in Finderup, Holbæk Amt. Siblings Maren Hansen, Mads Hansen, Mette Hansen, Hans Hansen.
Rasmus Sorensen is born about 1838 in Kirke Helsinge. Father Søren Rasmussen (b. about 1810 in Kirke Helsinge). Mother Ane Hansdatter (b. about 1808 in Kirke Helsinge).
Mother to Søren Rasmussen is Kirsten Andersdatter (b. about 1879). Besides Søren she has sons Niels Rasmussen and Rasmus Rasmussen.
Do you feel confident that we have in fact the correct man? The odds of two Hans Rasmussen's born on the same date would be great. I hope that if I can find the obituary or marriage license it will list his middle name which would make the match complete.
You (researchers) have done excellent work tracing Jensine back to the 1500's through the Nohring and Borch lines. It would be very interesting to see if you can follow the male side through Rasmus Sorensen and Soren Rasmussen.
Mother to Søren Rasmussen is Kirsten Andersdatter (b. about 1879). Besides Søren she has sons Niels Rasmussen and Rasmus Rasmussen. ---- Jane should this date be 1779?
Thank you again everyone for your time and help.
Dale
Yes - indeed - it's 1779-1780 as approximate birth date for Kirsten Andersdatter, mother to Søren Rasmussen, father to Rasmus Sørensen.
1834 Census Holbæk, Løve, Kirke Helsinge, Kirkehelsinge Bye, en Gaard, 23, FT-1834, C6486: Kirsten Andersdatter 54 widow Gaardkone (farmwife), Niels Rasmussen 28 single her son Gaardbestyrer, Rasmus Rasmussen 20 her son
1845 Census in Holbæk, Løve, Kirke Helsinge, Kr. Helsinge Bye, Kirsten is specifically identified as Søren's mother.
So confusing the way those place names are stated backwards in the census - like saying United States, Minnesota, Mille Lacs, Princeton area, Bogus Brook.
About Hans: Yes Dale I feel confident it's the same man!
I too feel the impulse to gather more evidence to really nail it down - the way we did with Jensine via her mother and siblings. That may not be the case for Hans, though. We can't know the true story - but the impression one gets is of a boy who does not have the strong family ties that Jensine had with her family.
With your new information perhaps an obituary could be found in a local paper in Princeton or St. Cloud - though after all it might not help. Your Mille Lacs County researcher perhaps has checked this. What a treasure you found there!!!
Anyway, with the birth date that matches (on his death record, and in the churchbook in Holbaek) and with the emigration record that matches (on the 1900 census in Minnesota with the Danish emigration record for Hans Soren), and with the middle initial S (in the 1905 census), it's enough to identify him.
Does your Mille Lacs County contact know that your great-great-great grandmother (Mette) Marie Milsted may be buried in the same place as Hans? Would be gratifying to have photos of both gravestones!
P.S. emailed you a recap of this forum's research on Hans
There are three in the plot. The third could be Jensine. I'll have to wait to hear back.
Kirsten Andersdatter was widowed. Is it known who Soren Rasmussen's father is?
Søren Rasmussen´s father must be Rasmus Jensen who died 27. nov. 1820 (63) op 273.
Søren Rasmussen was bapticed feb 17, 1811 op 127 upper on right side. There is no birthday.
Rasmus Jensen must be him who was married to Maren pedersdatter in 1801.

Kirsten,
I had found this site http://www.sa.dk/ao/English/default.aspx, I could download but never open anything so I didn't use it. Maybe it's because I am using a MAC?
Hanne,
When you reference a page, where are you looking?
You're all finding so much information, Thank you.

Dale, as it will tell you here, you must have JAVA to open the images:

It is a free download.
Hans Christensen married Karen Mogensdr 18 nov 1792 in Gorlev, (Løve), Holbaek, Denmark.
Per Ancestry.com digital record. No other info on this site.
Reminder: Hans and Karen are likely parents to Margrethe Hansdatter. Margrethe was baptised 16 Sep 1798 in Finderup, Løve, Holbæk - as posted earlier. She married Hans Madsen and they are parents to Ane Hansdatter/Hansen. Ane is mother to Hans Søren Rasmussen.
I'm surprised not to hear from Dale!
I'm here.
I'm still waiting on a picture of the gravestone. I was told it was large and easy to find.
I have a map showing the location of the 80 acre farm of Hans Rasmussen located north of Princeton, MN.
My contact has found entries in the local Princeton paper.
10-17-1918
"Hans Rasmussen, who formerly lived at Woodward Brook and for a short this in Princeton, died in Wisconsin on October 6 and the remains were brought here last Thursday for interment. Rev. C. Larson officiating at the funeral. The interment was at Oak Knoll.
Hans Rasmussen was born in Denmark on December 30, 1862, came to the United States in 1888.
He is survived by his wife and four children, who take means of sincerely thanking the kind friends who asset them in the obsequies."
10-10-1918
"Miss Marie Rasmussen has resigned her position at Allen Store and returned to her home in Milltown,
Wis."
I don't know why her home was in Milltown, but she was working in Princeton? Anyway that led me to think maybe Hans was living there also, or visiting, or working there and this was the Wisconsin place of death.
I checked with the Polk County, WI. Register of Deeds this morning via e-mail and she was kind enough to check and they do have a record of Hans Rasmussen who died 10-6-1918. I have to send $20.00 before I can get a non-certified copy and find out what else is on the record.
Dale
Hi Dale - you have found out a lot!!!
But now the mystery about Hans's death deepens. It seems that sometime after the 1910 census, Mary E. Rasmussen moved to Milltown, Polk, Wisconsin, not far from her home town near Princeton, Minnesota.
Then she goes back to her home town and gets a job at Allen Store.
Mary leaves that job on 10 October 1918 and returns to Milltown. (She's about 20; she was born Marie Elenora Rasmussen, 13 April 1897, in Saint Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota, to parents Hans Rasmussen and Jensine Milsted.)
A week later, Mary's father arrives in Polk County, Wisconsin, seemingly has followed her there - and dies - allegedly a suicide.
What happened??
In the 1920 census, she is age 22, living with the family of Odin B. Jensen, as a boarder. He is a retail merchant, Danish-born (immigrated 1906), who owns a dry goods store. She boards with him and his wife and children and is a sales lady in a retail store (census doesn't say if it's Odin's store).
I don't find Mary in the 1930 census. Odin Jensen is buried at Milltown Cemetery. A Find a Grave volunteer might be able to tell if Mary E. Rasmussen is there also.
The death certificate has his name Hans S. Rasmussen, cause of death was suicide by hanging. An interesting note is that the information provided by his wife lists the maiden name of the mother of Hans as unknown and name of father is Rasmussen.
Has anyone found a date/place of death for the father Rasmus Sorensen in Denmark?
The farmer Rasmus Sørensen born 1837 got old. He is still in the sencus 1925 together with the son Niels Peder Martin his wife and newborn son op 59. FT 1930 op 39 Rasmus Sørensen is not together with the son and family. The churchbook on AO only go to 1913.
It look like the book with dead 1924 to 1933 is on LAK.
So you have to ask somebody to look it up.
