Thanks Eva. I haven't had much luck finding anyone with similar names so far in Copenhagen in the 1830s

An Aunt says it is possible he was born in Aalborg and left Denmark from Copenhagen.

I doubt he left through Copenhagen if he came from Aalborg. More likely he left Aalborg to go to Hamburg.

It is possible of course, but the J Schmidt Robert found came on a ship that left Copenhagen, then Hamburg. I wonder if we will ever find them - such a common name, but what spelling for the surname is correct, or was the spelling recorded on any census.
