Hello,

I found the following record in the church book of Møgeltønder Aug. 31 of 1794. Unfortunately I don't speak any danish and as it is also difficult to read I'm really stuck here. I can't destingish between names and other words so it is nearly impossible to read for me. Maybe someone who speaks danish has more luck?

Appreciate any help!

Thanks a lot
Marco

Hi Marco,

I understand that you find it difficult to read - I cannot read it too - but I'm sure others will be able to.

Remember next time to give the image number, as it's often better to see the whole page and other names/words ... the image No. is 27.

Hello.

Do you know which name are you looking for?

Marco Joneleit

I'm looking for Else Nicolaisen. Born 31. Aug. 1794. I was hoping that this one is the correct record, because the first word looks like Else and there is a 31 in the second line.

Lissa Pedersen

I was wrong - the image No. is 29.

The first name is Else .. and the date 31 August

And I read something like Else daughter of perhaps Jens (?) Nikolajsen (?) ... baptised 7 September

Witnesses:
Margrethe Nielsdatter of xxxxsund

With only a few reservations:

Else, daater af Jens Nikolaison Palleson og Kirsten
Jenses i Gallenhuus, fød den 31 August, og døbt den 7. Sept.
Faddere:  Margrete Nielses i Gallenhuus
...............Marie Hansdtr af T.....
Kirsten Sorensd  .... fra Hammelof
Anders Jørgensen fra Abild?
Hans Jensen (from the same)

Else, daughter of Jens §Nicolaisen Pallesen and Kirsten
*Jensen at Gallehus, born August 31, baptized September 7.
Witnesse/sponsors
Margrete Nielsen in Gallenhus
(name) Marie Hansdatter [omitted father's -sen name] of T....
Kirsten Sørensdatter from Abild?
Hans Jensen

§ The male line of the family was probably known by the combined patronymics, Nicolaisen Pallesen.
*Same as Jensdatter. In other contexts and parishes, Jenses could be Mrs. Jens.

Hi Marco,

Just a thought that this could be the family in the 1803 census:

toender, Tønder, Højer og Lø, Abild (Slesvigsk), Wenmos, , Wenmos Schulhaus, 17, FT-1803
Name: Age: Marital status: Occupation in household: Occupation: Birth place:
Jens Pallesen 53  Gift Mann Schulhalter
Kiersten Christians 33  Gift dessen Frau Knippeln
Else Pallesen 9   ihre Kinder Knippeln
Kierstin Pallesen 3   ihre Kinder

Thank you so much for your help. I would never have come so far. And it all seems to fit. There is just one thing I don't understand. Why did the father have two surnames? Could that mean, that his fathers name was Nicolai Pallesen and he decided to stick to the Pallesen surname instead of using Nicolaisen?
