I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what this word means in English (aftaegtsmand).  I found it on a 1845 census after a person's name under the column "business".

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,

Hi Ruth,

It means "pensioner, former owner, supported by the new owner of landed property, especially by a son providing for his father".

Best regards,
Asger

Dear Asger,

Just to make sure I understand, it means he is supported by the new owner of the property, in this case his son-in-law, whom he gave the property to.  Is that right?

Respectfully,
Ruth
