Can someone help me with the files from the US census files 1910/naturalization and marriage documents for Walt(h)er Stoltz[/b] (he is born in Denmark 26th Juni 1869, Skt. Mikkel Parish, Denmark. He for sure called him self Walt(h)er Stoltz in the US, but actually he was named Thorvald Ferdinand Waldemar Andreasen at his birth!)

I am also interested in the naturalization document and the ship manifest for his wife Caroline Christiansen.

From other census I know they both arrived to US in 1892, but Caroline is not named on the ship manifest where Walther (in this manifest: using the name Thorvald Andreasen) arrived.

Thanks a lot

In the 1900 census (which you apparently have) they were in Dane County, Wisconsin and both listed 1892 as immigration year, but by 1910 (listed as Stolts) they had moved to Polk County, Wisconsin (attached) and Walter listed 1890, Caroline 1894.  They also listed married 8 years in 1900 but only 16 years in 1910.

Walter, Caroline, and their son Edward are buried in Polk County:

I will search more later if I have time.

In both the 1920 and 1930 Polk County censuses, Walter listed 1891 immigration and Caroline 1892, and I think this is Caroline:

Name:  Christiansen, Caroline Occupation:  Jomfru
Age:  22 Destination:  NY.
Contract no.:  134300 Registration date:  4/26/1892
Birth place:  ? Birth place:  ?

Last residence:  Kbhvn. Destination country:  USA
Destination city:  New York City Destination state:  New York State
Name of ship:  Island
IDcode:  D9293C0709

There is a hole in the Island's manifest where Caroline is listed (attached) but her destination was in Wisconsin.  The Island arrived New York from Copenhagen 12 May 1892.

Thanks a lot, Homer. That is very great findings. I have added a photo to Walter Stoltz in "Find a grave"!

Are there any naturalization papers to find? There seems to be in ancestry.com, but I have no access.

Lots of good wishes
Karsten

Ancestry has only a few random naturalization records online, and none is listed for a Walter Stoltz born 1869.   There are two Thorvald Andreasen's listed, but born 1879 and 1882 Norway.

In the 1920 census, Walter listed that he was naturalized in 1902.

By the way, did you mean 1891 ship manifest for Thorvald?  If this is him, he arrived New York from Bremen 27 November 1891 on the ship Havel, listed as Thorwald Andreassen 23.

The attached file card on Ancestry is probably Walter's naturalization.  It does not list much detail, but here is a volunteer who researches Dane County court records, and you might ask her if the original applications are available.  (If they married in Dane County, maybe she can also find that record):

CitatI wonder why Walter's name is so different in America from his Danish birth name?

In this case, there's a perfectly natural explanation. The surname of his mother was Stolz. Please refer to AO, Slagelse Skt Mikkel, Sorø county, 1862-1872, opslag 85, Nr. 42.

Thanks, once again, Homer!

I know, the mother's name was Stoltz, Inger. Walter change his familyname from Andreasen to Stoltz, because Stoltz was more "international", and Andreasen probably was a little difficult to pronounce for Americans. The same reason he change his name from Thorvald to Walter. But one more reason he changed his family name was to put distance to his father Niels Andreasen, who was a heavy an violent drinker. Walter himself was very religios.

I only search informations about happenings in the US.

Hi Karsten,

My posting was a reply to a question from Sara, who has since asked moderator Mette Fløjborg to delete her postings.

As I recall it, Sara had found the marriage of Walter and Caroline in Union Grove, Racine, Wisconsin, 3 Dec. 1892, which can be seen at this link:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#searchType=exact&surname=Stolts&marriagePlaceLoc1=Wisconsin%2C%20United%20States&p=recordResults&marriagePlaceId=59&marriageYear=1892

Best regards,

Thanks, Inger, just wonder why the information about the wedding was deleted? Thanks for the link. It is no doubt Thorvald/Walter.

First I wondered what the initial "A" was about, but it is of course "Andreasen". The father has turned to Niels Andersen, probably again because Andreasen is difficult to pronounce.

I am surprised that Caroline's father's family name is Petersen!

Best wishes
Karsten
