Trying to find Jens Madsen Larsen Schrøder in 1840

I think the parents of my Jens Madsen (Larsen) Schrøder died before 1840 and he became a foster child of Jens Jensen and Karen Marie Pedersdatter.

I have not been able to find him in between the 1834 Census and the 1840 Census to know when his parents died.  I looked in Odense for 1840 but did not find him under any name variation of Jens Madsen, Jens Larsen or Jens Schrøder.

Any help in finding him for 1840 is greatly appreciated.

Note: I have his marriage to Ane Jespersdatter 12 Nov 1859 in Hårslev, Skovby, Odense, Denmark.  I also have all of their children and the Census after their marriage.

Thank you so much for finding all of that.  I did not know about the probate webpage that you linked to so I have saved that for future reference.

I wonder if the surname of the mother is wrong on the 1801 Census.  Both Maren's seem to be the same age for both 1787 and 1801 Census and the children are listed as 'deres'børn'.

When I look at the transcripts for both Census it says the following:

1787 - No of Marriages   1
1801 - No of Marriages   1

If Jens Jensen is living in the priest house in 1787 does that not mean he is a pastor?

I think Maren's patronymic could be wrong in the 1787 Census.

I think Præstelodshus means a house situated on the land of the priest or the church.

I saw the death record but there was no name given for her.  Just his mother-in-law.  I thought that if she was still alive for the 1787 Census then perhaps she was in Holse.  The only person who matched the age of 78 at death was Maren Laursdatter.

I used Krabsens and only the one Holse showed up.  Either way, the family and extended family has been in Brenderup for years so I think that is the correct place.

I think so too. Krabsen does not have all place names in Denmark, though.

It confused me that the place name Holse turned up in the parish register for Haarslev sogn.

l think you can forget about Jens Jensen's mother-in-law in Holse (Haarslev parish) and concentrate on my new findings:

- betrothal, and birth records for 'your' Jens Jensen's five sons.

Please note the surname Skrøder turning up in the birth record 1784 !!

The parents were married in Haarslev, and the two oldest sons Jørgen and Jens were born in Ejlskov, Haarslev parish.

The family moved from Ejlskov to  Præstehus sometime between 1784 and 1787.

Lars Jensen, Anders Jensen and Christian Jensen were born in Præstehus, and their baptisms are recorded in the parish register for Ore sogn.

The Lægdsrulle 1792 which I linked to is for Brenderup parish.

The Jens you are referring to is a son of Gaardmand Jens Jensen in Holse, Haarslev parish, and has nothing to do with 'your' Jens Jensen.

There's a Holse in Brenderup parish, and a Holse in Haarslev parish.

Is that the same Jens Jensen born 17 Oct 1784 in Ejlskov, Hårslev, Skovby, Odense, Denmark?

If so, then he would have been about 33 at the time of marriage.  So, yes, 36 is a little off.

His brother, Lars Jensen, died only days after him on 28 May 1866 in Brenderup.

I have been unable to find the death for Jens Madsen Larsen Schrøder.

I find him in all of the Census up to 1880 and then he is not in the 1890 Census under Larsen or Schrøder.  His wife, Ane Jespersdatter, died 29 Dec 1875 in Hårslev, Skovby, Odense, Denmark.

She is a 'plejebarn' so I assumed that her father died.

Thank you Inger.  I would not have thought to check Ejlby.  I knew his daughter Laura Marie and her husband Poul Andersen were living there but I had not done their Census searches yet nor did I think her father would have moved there with him getting on in age.
