I am at a loss to know where I should look for the death record of John Nissen Johnsen, b. 12 May 1872 in Dostrup, Tonder.  Also for his wife Sidsel Marie Jensen Klit, b. 24 Sept. 1870 in Husby, Ringkobing.   They had six children, each born in a different parish and also in four different amps!!!  The last I found the couple they were in the 1930 census of Gjellerup, Ringkobing.  Is there some on-line resource where Denmark deaths are recorded.  In the U.S. we have the Social Security Death index that lists everybody who has died since 1940.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  My guess is they died in Ringkobing or Haderslev amps - however, note it is just a guess!  HELP!!

here they are in census 1940 - in Esbjerg - with a son Kristian (who was retarded - åndsvag)

John Johnsen died 15.4.1944 - I will send you the obituary later

In 1939 a news papers tell, they had been married 50 years in november 1939 - but the census 1940 tells they were married 5.10.1895

I see Inger Toudal found his death too - and Sidsels, she died shortly after 13.06.1944

Thanks Inge and Inger, just what I needed to complete my records on my grandfathers cousin and his wife.  It is interesting to note that  John was on the same ship with his his mother and two of her brothers when they arrived in New York in March of 1873... he was listed as being six months old.  His two uncles stayed in the U.S.; however, for some reason he and his mother and father were back in Dostrup in 1775 where a sister was born.  I also learned from your responses that the name Nis must be a shortened abbreviation for Nissen.  This 84 year old man is most appreciative of all those who use Danish Forum to help him continue to learn.  I'm looking forward to reading the obituaries when I get them.  Claude Anders Hanson.  (My great great grandfather's name was Anders Hansen...and he had nine children...and they all spelled their surname Hansen except Niels, my great grandfather - who spelled it Hanson)  I've always known I was Danish; however, most people would tell me "No, you must be Swedish!"

Nis is a first name and Nissen (the son of Nis) is a familyname - here a middle name.
Nis and Nissen is common in the southern part of Jylland - Niels and Nielsen is the same name in other parts of Denmark.
My grandfather had 2 brothers who went to California, a little later than your relatives.
I have sent the obituaries.
