Gunderup, Aalborg - Need Help Finding 3 Families 1880-1900

Hello,

Lars Jacobsen and Karen Marie Christensdatter had 16 known children together, but only 6 of these children survived into adulthood. Of the 6 surviving children, 3 are known to have immigrated to the USA, where all three settled in Racine, Wisconsin.

I need some help finding the other 3 children and their families in Denmark. Those children and their known families all seem to disappear from sight in Denmark in the 1877-1880 timeframe. I have colored them red below. Perhaps they also immigrated, but they are not known to have lived in Racine with the others. In addition to all of the pertinent information from parish registers, I have also given the place of their last known residence below.

I would like to include the information in a book that I have written about the family and I have held off finishing the book until I can find the missing information.

As I have not been able to find the baptism of Anders or the birth of the other children, I have looked at the original FT on AO: 1890, Landsogn, Ålborg, Fleskum, Nøvling - opslag 19, family nr. 11

It tells that Anders was born i Gunderup, but the others were born in Lundby or Sundby (Nørre Sundby). I have looked in both places without finding their birth. So ???

About Anders it tells that he is mentally handicapped. - You find an 1 in one of the columns to the right - the column for metally handicapped.

Hello Everyone,

I found some information on Ancestry.com about Laurids Svendsen, the 2nd child of Søren Svendsen and Mariane Lausten.

The unsourced information says that he was was born on 17 May 1882 in Lundy, Gunderup sogn but that he was baptized in Holmens Kirke, Holmens Kanal 21, 1060 København on 5 Mar 1883. I suspect that this may be true for all the others that I cannot find.

In looking for parish records on AO, I cannot find a "Holmens Kirke" in København. Do you have any idea what parish it is in?

With Ruth’s help, I was able to make a bit of progress on the three missing families, including some further lines of descendants and one child’s immigration to Australia, but two of the families drop out of sign again, proving to be again very elusive.

I have checked the FT-1901 on AO page-by-page for Gunderup and Nøvling and cannot find the family. I also re-checked the Danish Emigration Archives. I went back and forth through the parish registers from 1877-1892 in both Gunderup and Nøvling and did not find any further births or baptisms.

Family 2: Thomas Peder JENSEN & Johanne Marie LAURITZDATTER {LARSEN}

As you will see, Ruth found her (in thread above) in Ålborg Købstad in the FT-1880, recently widowed. Although the DDD for Ålborg amt in 1890 is already complete and searchable, I was unsuccessful in finding either her or any of her children.

As a side note, at the time of the census in 1880, her brothers Christen and Jens Christian are working in Odense. Sister Mariane is living in Gunderup (Lundby by). Her parents are living in Gunderup (Gunderup by) with her youngest brother, Søren. Brother Jacob is already in Racine, Wisconsin. By 1882, Christen is in Racine. Søren joins them in 1889. I do not find Johanne Marie in any of these places.

I think Johanne Marie Larsen stayed in Aalborg at least till spring 1884: Confirmation of Ane Sine Jørgine, Aalborg Vor Frue 1868-1888, opslag 220.

The remark you could not read at her daughter Johanne Maries birth in Vadum sept. 19th 1872 says:
The parents married at a registry office nov. 26th 1872.

With this little piece of information pointing me back to Ålborg For Frue, I went back to the parish registers and found that Johanne Marie remarried to Jens Christian Jensen (born about Jan 1855 in Ålborg) on 28 Mar 1885 in Ålborg [Ålborg For Frue 1856-1889, Opslag 266, Nr. 10].

I will look in For Frue for subsequent childbirths, because he was from Ålborg, but I did not see confirmations in Ålborg For Frue for her youngest two children in the 1888-1993 period.

I located Jens Christian Jensen and Johanne Marie on the 1890 census of Ålborg, where she is now known simply as "Marie Jensen" together with a child that was born a year before they married, now 6 years old.

I confirmed in the parish registers for the birth of Camilla that this is indeed the couple [Ålborg Vor Frue 1877-1886, Opslag 387, Nr. 143]. Next to her name is a remark that I think read "Fadderne Tilladlse".

The father's birthplace is given as Lendum, but this is not a parish so perhaps it is a neighborhood of Ålborg?

This leaves me with only the older children and the death of her husband to find.

I am perplexed by the disappearance of the youngest two children from the 1890 census of Ålborg Købstad (where we find Johanne Marie remarried) and from all of Ålborg amt (using the DDD). They would have only been 15 and 11 years old, respectively. These children are:

We see these two children living with their recently widowed mother in 1880. In 1884, we see the oldest girl, Ane Sine, confirmed in Ålborg For Frue, but the youngest two children do not have confirmation records -- that I could find -- there.

I also searched all Ålborg For Frue death records between 1878-1891 and there were no deaths that correspond.

Yet, in 1883 Johanne Marie has another child and in March 1885 she remarries.

Is it possible the children went to an orphanage in Ålborg shortly after their mother was widowed in 1880, thens stayed there so she would be able to work? If yes, why would the orphanage not appear in the 1890 census of Ålborg?

The notice under the name of Camilla is: Faderens tilladelse = with permission of the father.
This means she is called Jensen after her own father.

The two youngest from first marriage could live with some family or other fosterparents. That was not so unusual.

In FT it says: med hjælp fra Fattigvæsenet, meaning she is poor and get help from poor-law authorities.
So they might have paid for the children to stay with other families. If so it shoud be registrated in Fattigvæsenet, but these records are not online.
