Wayne Johnson

Hello,

My name is Wayne Johnson; I am the grandson of a Peter Miller who reportedly immigrated to America from Denmark in 1894, at the age of 14.  (Peter Miller declared during a 1900 US Census interview that he was born in Denmark in "February 1870," and arrived in the US "in 1894.")   I suspect that he may have been born Jens Peter Moller on 09 February 1870, possibly in Svaneke, Bornholm to Jens Sineus Moller and Frederikke Margrete Mossin, the second son of seven males, and possibly three daughters.  There is a question whether this Svaneke native, Jens Peter is the person I seek as I do not have much to go on – my Peter Miller was killed in a car accident in 1927, before I was born (1931).  Incidentally, importantly, I have not been able to find him in the Danish Emigration Data Base, nor in Ellis Island records.

I have been looking for him for about 10 years.   His USA "Naturalization First Papers" -- which would likely have contained family data -- were filed in Webster City, Iowa.  Those "papers" were recorded on the Citizenship document as having been used as a basis for the Minnesota District Judge to grant him US citizenship on 03 July 1900.  But of course, as luck would have it, the original document is not to be found in the Webster City Archives.

I found a reference to the Svaneke, Bornholm Moller family through the newest LDS (Mormon) Church "records search" program, listing him as above reported.  I have reached the possible conclusion that he might be my grandfather given that this Jens Peter (1) was born 09 February 1870, and (2) that his mother's given name was Frederikke (this became part of my judgment because my mother was my Peter's first born -- she was named Emma Fredericka Miller.)  I am not sure, as this is slim evidence; therefore, I'm not too hopeful, but this is the only lead I have.

I would greatly appreciate any help anyone might be able offer.

Sincerely, Wayne S. Johnson

My name is Wayne Johnson; I am the grandson of a Peter Miller who reportedly immigrated to America from Denmark in 1894, at the age of 14.  (Peter Miller declared during a 1900 US Census interview that he was born in Denmark in "February 1870," and arrived in the US "in 1894.")

Wayne, if he was born 1870 and immigrated 1894 he would have been 24 not 14.

I assume he was the one listed in 1900 Stearns County Minnesota census? Unfortunately, he failed to list immigration year in the 1910 Stevens County Minnesota census, and where was he 1920?  Anna and children were then in Fargo, North Dakota without him, but Anna is listed as married and not a widow.

Where is he buried?  Does he have a grave marker with birth date?

Lissa, if he was the Jens Peter Møller who emigrated 1916 he can not be the one that Wayne seeks, who was in U.S. censuses by 1900.

The above Jens Peter Møller arrived New York on the Oscar II 12 May 1916.  He stated he had not been in USA before and listed nearest relative as his wife Jenny Cathinka Møller of Allinge [Bornholm].  Destination was a friend in Mineola New York.

Thanks to the research of you all, and especially Lissa's thorough documentation of the above family, we can now see that Wayne's grandfather is NOT Jens Peter Moller of Svaneke, Bornholm. It was important to rule out this man.

So where was Wayne's grandfather Peter Miller born in Denmark? Wayne, you don't share many details about "your" Peter Miller.

Since he is in Webster, Iowa, when he first arrives, maybe there is a relative there who can help us tie him back to Denmark.

His death record and marriage record also might contain his birth place and the names of his parents.

The census records below seem to refer to "your" Peter, as Homer found. Note that the 1900 math is wrong for Anna, and in 1910 Peter's birth year is given as 1872.

There is another, different Peter Miller b 1870 with wife Annie in Meeker County, Minnesota - so probably the marriage record above is for that couple.

Wayne, would you comment on this post, below? Is the information about being born in Copenhagen NOT correct?

Found online:
"I would appreciate any help finding Peder Møller (aka Peter Miller), reportedly born Copenhagen 24 February 1872. A "butter-maker" apprentice, he reportedly left Denmark for America in 1888, at age 16. Oral records have him entering University of Minnesota Agriculure ("Dairy") School and graduating from there in 1895 -- attempts to obtain records from there have met with blank stares and stone walls ("..have no people to look in stacks, and won't let non-employees go there..").

After graduating, Peter arrived Georgeville, Minnesota prior to 1897, where he opened a creamery (married there in 1897). He was successful businessman based on his abilities, opening and running creameries, in addtion to the first one in Morris, Minnesota; Ellendale, North Dakota (and ultimately becoming the first North Dakota State Dairy Commissioner in mid-1910s); and other locations, ending up as owner-operator of large creamery in Cannon Falls, Minnesota (1925 - 1927 when he was killed in automobile accident).

Using every possible Nordic/Germanic spelling variation of the name, I have spent tens of hours going over Danish records that are available on the Internet, including census data and immigration records, in addition to posting to the respective MN andf ND boards, to no avail. I have hit the perverbial "Stonewall." I must be missing something so simple, as I have my facts correct, or at least that's what I'm told by relatives."

Mvh

Hello all, Wayne is having computer or server problems and asked me to post this for him:

"Here is Wayne Johnson finally I hope; I'm so sorry that I have not been able to contact the forum, as after a few minutes of connection, I am disconnected, and have to start all over again.  It has something to do with my computer.

I wish to thank you for all the help; Lissa is right, as relayed to me by Homer, that Jens Peter Møller is not my Peter Miller.  There have been serious conflicts in data over the year of birth, along with other items.  The "First Naturalization Papers," had they been available from Webster City, Hamilton County, Iowa, would have cleared it all up.  I took the 1870 Birth Date off the 1900 Census because it was just after the Naturalization approval, Granted Citizenship, as was the 1894 arrival date.  There had been confusion about his Birth Date (1872 vs 1870) and about year of arrival (1888 vs 1894); therefore, the confusion by me.

Again: I am very sorry to have bothered you, and thank you, thank you for all your many efforts to help me.  I am at a complete loss where to go next, as I had already gone though all the Møller families in Copenhagen, parish by parish, a few years ago.  I have covered all the US Census documents for Minnesota and North Dakota.  Your help was much appreciated.  Sincerely, Wayne Johnson"

Hi Wayne,

Thank you for writing on Wayne's behalf, Homer! :  D Don't you just hate those computer issues? At the end of the day, though, our computers are worth the aggravation.

So you agree with Homer and me in concluding that Jens Peter Moller in Bornholm is not our man.

I think the next step is to order two records.

1: a copy of the marriage record. You seem to know just where and when Peter was married, yes?

2: a copy of his death record. Is the record I posted the right one?

About his naturalization papers: I don't think a declaration of intent to become a citizen would be located in a city archives. Thoughts, anyone? I would think the place to find them would be a county or state archives. I just read the National Archives description of where these records are located - and it can vary - and what I read did not specify a location for Hamilton County, Iowa. That said, I'm not sure those papers are going to tell very much anyway.

It sounds as if you have his citizenship document?
